Chapter 4: The Secret Behind Marcus’s Disappearance

Maya stared at the signature until the letters blurred.

She read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

No matter how many times she looked, the name remained the same.

*Daniel Reeves.*

Her stomach tightened.

For a moment, she forgot about the crowded airport.

Forgot about the people watching.

Forgot about the pain in her foot.

All she could think about was one impossible question.

Why was Daniel’s name on a letter from Marcus?

“What is it?””

Robert’s voice pulled her back.

Maya folded the paper quickly.

“Nothing.””

Robert studied her face.

He knew her too well to believe that.

“Maya.””

She looked away.

“Not here.””

Robert glanced around the terminal.

He understood immediately.

Too many eyes.

Too many ears.

And too many people who had already seen enough of her life unfold in public.

He turned toward Daniel.

“You’re coming with us.””

Daniel blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

“I have a flight.””

Robert looked at the boarding gate.

“Not anymore.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“You can’t tell me what to do.””

Robert calmly reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his phone.

Daniel saw the screen.

His face changed.

Because whatever Robert was showing him, he understood the seriousness instantly.

“I suggest you stop making this worse.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

For once, he didn’t argue.

Ten minutes later, they sat in a quieter corner of the airport near an empty café.

The holiday crowd moved around them, but the three of them felt separated from the world.

Maya sat across from Daniel.

The man who had insulted her.

The man who had hurt her.

The man whose name had appeared on a letter from her missing husband.

She still couldn’t understand it.

“How do you know Marcus?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t.””

Maya stared at him.

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

“You signed something with him.””

Daniel looked at Robert.

Then back at Maya.

“I didn’t sign anything.””

Maya pulled the letter out and placed it on the table.

The bottom section was visible.

Daniel’s eyes immediately went to his name.

His face went pale.

“I didn’t write this.””

“Then explain why your name is there.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“That’s not a signature.””

Maya frowned.

“What?””

“It’s a reference.””

She looked at the paper.

Daniel pointed carefully.

“Look.””

She did.

The name wasn’t underneath Marcus’s signature.

It was written beside a line.

A small note.

Almost hidden.

*Evidence verified through D. Reeves.*

Maya looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that silence told her more than words could.

“Daniel.””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know Marcus sent this to you.””

“Who is Marcus to you?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

For the first time since she met him, he looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Just tired.

“Marcus was my employee.””

The words hit her.

Maya froze.

“What?””

“He worked for Westbridge Holdings.””

She stared at him.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

Her mind raced backward.

The late nights.

The strange phone calls.

The sudden business trips.

The way Marcus had become distant months before he disappeared.

She had believed he was overwhelmed.

Stressed.

Trying to build a future for their family.

But now another possibility appeared.

One she had refused to consider.

“He never told me.””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“That doesn’t surprise me.””

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at the table.

“Marcus wasn’t the kind of person who shared things when he thought it would hurt someone.””

Maya’s voice became sharper.

“You don’t get to talk about him like you knew him.””

Daniel looked up.

“I knew him better than you think.””

The sentence hurt.

And Daniel saw it.

Immediately, his expression changed.

“I didn’t mean—”

“No.””

Maya stood.

“You did.””

People nearby looked over.

She didn’t care.

“You knew my husband. You worked with him. And somehow you know why he disappeared.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

Maya’s hands trembled.

“Where is he?””

Silence.

“Where is Marcus?””

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t know.””

She laughed softly.

But there was no humor in it.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I’ve been trying to find him too.””

The answer stopped her.

Robert leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Six months ago, Marcus discovered something inside Westbridge.””

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Financial records.””

Maya’s heart started beating faster.

“What kind of records?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Records showing money was being moved through fake accounts.””

Robert’s expression changed.

“How much?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

“Enough to destroy the company.””

Maya stared.

“Marcus found this?””

“Yes.””

“And then he disappeared.””

Daniel nodded.

She felt cold.

“So you’re saying my husband vanished because he found something illegal?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m saying he vanished because someone realized he found it.””

Robert tapped his fingers against the table.

“Who knew?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“A few executives.””

“Names.””

Daniel stayed silent.

Robert’s voice hardened.

“Daniel.””

He sighed.

“Three people.””

Maya watched him.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at her.

Then said the names.

The first two meant nothing.

The third one did.

Because it was a name she knew.

A name she had heard Marcus mention many times.

A name she never thought twice about.

“Victoria Lane.””

Her face changed.

“No.””

Daniel noticed.

“You know her?””

“She was Marcus’s supervisor.””

Daniel nodded.

“And she was the person who approved the transfers.””

Maya sat down slowly.

Her mind felt like it was moving too fast.

Victoria.

The woman who had sent Marcus gifts when he worked late.

The woman who had attended their anniversary dinner once.

The woman who had hugged Maya and said, “Your husband is lucky to have you.””

All those memories suddenly felt different.

Robert watched her carefully.

“Maya, there’s something else.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

Robert reached into his briefcase.

He removed a folder.

“I wasn’t going to show you this today.””

Maya stared.

“What is it?””

Robert placed it on the table.

“Something Marcus sent me before he disappeared.””

Her breath caught.

“You had something from him?””

Robert nodded.

“I received it two days after he vanished.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Robert looked genuinely regretful.

“Because Marcus asked me not to.””

Maya felt anger rise.

“He asked you to keep secrets from me?””

Robert didn’t defend himself.

“Yes.””

She looked away.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

“No.””

Robert’s voice softened.

“Everyone was trying to protect you.””

Maya looked back.

“I didn’t need protection.””

Robert was quiet.

Then he said:

“Marcus believed you did.””

That hurt more.

Because part of her understood.

Marcus had always been protective.

Sometimes too protective.

She opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A security camera image.

A man entering a parking garage.

Marcus.

The date was six months ago.

The night he disappeared.

Maya’s fingers froze.

Behind him stood another person.

Someone she recognized.

Someone who made her blood run cold.

Daniel saw her face.

“What?””

She slowly turned the photo around.

Daniel looked.

Then his entire expression changed.

Because he recognized the person standing behind Marcus.

“No.””

Maya whispered.

“Who is that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Robert already knew.

His voice was barely audible.

“Victoria Lane.””

The woman who had pretended to be their friend.

The woman who knew everything about Marcus.

The woman who was supposedly helping him.

Maya stared at the picture.

Then noticed one final detail.

Marcus wasn’t walking away from Victoria.

He was walking toward her.

Like he trusted her.

Like he believed she was there to help.

Maya turned the photo over.

On the back was a handwritten message.

A message Marcus had written himself.

Her hands shook as she read it.

*Maya, if you’re seeing this, it means I couldn’t come home.*

She stopped breathing.

Below it was another sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

*Do not trust the person who tells you they found me.*

And underneath those words…

Was a name.

May you like

A name that made Robert Carter stand up immediately.

Because it was the name of the person who had been searching for Marcus all along.
