Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth Robert Buried

The video ended.

No dramatic music.

No warning.

Just a black screen reflecting Maya’s own face.

A face she barely recognized.

For six months, she had lived with one painful question.

Why did Marcus leave?

Now she had an answer.

And somehow, it created even more questions.

Robert Carter stood frozen behind her.

Daniel looked at him like he was seeing a stranger.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Maya turned.

“Is it true?””

Robert didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Her voice became quieter.

“Is it true?””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Maya…”

“Don’t.””

She stepped away.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

Robert looked devastated.

“I can explain.””

She laughed once.

A broken sound.

“Everyone says that.””

Daniel moved closer to Robert.

“What did you do?””

Robert looked at him.

“I didn’t hurt Marcus.””

“Then explain why he said you were hiding something.””

Robert looked at the laptop.

“He misunderstood.””

Maya stared.

“My husband spent months hiding from the world because he misunderstood?””

Robert didn’t answer.

She walked closer.

“Tell me.””

The old man who had seemed unshakable all day finally looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had carried a secret for too long.

“Marcus came to me because he found something.””

“The corruption.””

Robert nodded.

“Yes.””

“And?””

Robert looked down.

“And he discovered my company was connected to it.””

The room became silent.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

Robert continued.

“Not intentionally.””

Maya stared.

“Explain.””

“Years ago, Carter Financial invested in several companies. Westbridge was one of them.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That’s normal.””

“Yes.””

Robert looked at the floor.

“But one of those companies was used to move illegal funds.””

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“And you didn’t know?””

“No.””

She watched him carefully.

“Do you expect me to believe that?””

Robert accepted the question.

“No.””

That honesty stopped her.

He continued.

“I should have investigated sooner. I trusted the wrong people.””

“Victoria.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“She manipulated everyone.””

Robert nodded.

“But when Marcus found the evidence, he didn’t know who was involved.””

Maya looked at the laptop.

“So you helped him disappear.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Robert looked at her.

“Because someone tried to kill him.””

The words landed heavily.

Maya froze.

“What?””

Robert’s voice lowered.

“Marcus was followed the night he disappeared.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell her?””

Robert looked at Maya.

“Because Marcus begged me not to.””

Maya felt anger rise.

“Of course he did.””

Robert looked hurt.

“Maya.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Every decision was made for me.””

She pointed at the laptop.

“Marcus chose to disappear.””

She pointed at Robert.

“You chose to hide it.””

She looked at Daniel.

“You chose silence.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I was the only person living inside the lie.””

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Maya walked toward the door.

Daniel stopped her.

“Where are you going?””

“To find Marcus.””

Robert immediately said:

“You can’t.””

She turned.

“Why?””

“Because if Victoria knows you saw that video, she will come after you.””

Maya looked at him.

“She already came after me.””

Robert frowned.

“What?””

“She watched me get humiliated in that airport.””

A pause.

“She knew Daniel would be there.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What are you saying?””

Maya looked at him.

“The airport wasn’t random.””

Everyone went quiet.

She continued.

“Victoria knew Daniel’s schedule.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“She arranged that?””

“Maybe.””

Maya looked at the video.

“Or maybe she wanted to see what kind of person he was.””

Daniel looked angry.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus was testing everyone.””

Robert’s expression changed.

“What?””

Maya pointed at the notebook.

“The list.””

She opened it.

“Trust no one who benefits from your silence.””

She looked at the names.

“Maybe Marcus wasn’t only investigating corruption.””

Daniel understood first.

“He was investigating loyalty.””

Maya nodded.

“He needed to know who would tell the truth when nobody was watching.””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel looked at Robert.

“And what did he discover?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Maya stared.

“Robert.””

Finally, he spoke.

“He discovered something about your family.””

Her face changed.

“My family?””

Robert nodded.

“Not your current family.””

A pause.

“Your father.””

The room went completely still.

Maya’s breathing slowed.

“My father died when I was twenty.””

“I know.””

“What does he have to do with this?””

Robert looked at the floor.

“Your father was one of the original investors connected to the companies involved.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“He tried to expose them.””

“And?””

Robert looked at her.

“He disappeared from the business world.””

Maya stared.

“My father retired.””

Robert’s expression softened.

“That’s what people were told.””

A cold feeling moved through her.

“Robert.””

“He wasn’t forced out because of business failure.””

“Then why?””

Robert hesitated.

“Because he found the same thing Marcus found.””

Maya felt the room spin.

Her father.

Marcus.

The corruption.

All connected.

Daniel whispered:

“This goes back years.””

Robert nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya looked at the laptop again.

“Where is Marcus now?””

Robert didn’t answer.

She turned.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“You helped him disappear.””

“Yes.””

“So where is he?””

Robert looked ashamed.

“He didn’t tell me.””

Maya stared.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“He only contacted me through secure messages.””

“How many?””

“Three.””

“And you deleted them?””

“No.””

Robert reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small device.

“He left everything here.””

Maya took it.

Inside were encrypted files.

Daniel looked over her shoulder.

“There’s a message.””

Maya opened it.

Marcus’s voice appeared.

Not video.

Only audio.

Her husband’s voice filled the room.

“Maya.””

Her eyes immediately filled.

She hadn’t heard him say her name in months.

“If you’re hearing this, then something went wrong.””

She covered her mouth.

Marcus continued.

“I wanted to come home.””

A pause.

“I wanted to tell you everything.””

His voice shook.

“But I knew if I came back, they would follow me to you.””

Maya closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

A breath.

“I’m sorry I made you feel abandoned.””

Tears fell silently.

“I need you to understand something.””

The recording became quieter.

“I never stopped loving you.””

Maya pressed her hand against her chest.

Then Marcus said something that changed the meaning of everything.

“The person you should trust most is the person you think you can’t.””

The audio ended.

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Maya wiped her tears.

“I don’t know.””

Then the device beeped.

A new file appeared.

Created seconds earlier.

Everyone looked at it.

Robert frowned.

“That wasn’t there before.””

Maya opened it.

A location appeared.

No name.

No explanation.

Just an address.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

His face went pale.

“What?””

Maya looked at him.

“You know that place.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

He stared at the address.

Then whispered:

“It’s the old Westbridge emergency facility.””

Robert stepped closer.

“That place was abandoned.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Maya looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice was barely audible.

“It was abandoned publicly.””

A pause.

“But privately…”

He looked at her.

“Someone still uses it.””

Maya grabbed her coat.

“We’re going.””

Robert shook his head.

“Maya, wait.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I waited long enough.””

They left the building twenty minutes later.

The drive was silent.

Nobody knew what waited at the facility.

Nobody knew if Marcus would be there.

Nobody knew who they could trust.

But when they arrived, they found the door already open.

Inside was a single room.

A table.

A chair.

And a photograph.

Maya picked it up.

It was taken recently.

Marcus standing outside the facility.

Alive.

But that wasn’t what made her freeze.

It was the person standing beside him.

The person holding Marcus’s shoulder.

The person Maya thought had betrayed her.

Because the person in the photograph was…

Victoria Lane.

And on the back of the picture were five words written in Marcus’s handwriting.

*She saved my life.*

Maya stared.

Everything she believed about Victoria collapsed.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A voice whispered.

“Maya?””

Her heart stopped.

Because she knew that voice.

“Marcus?”” she breathed.

A pause.

Then:

“Don’t trust anyone with you.””

The line crackled.

“Maya, listen to me. Robert is not the only person who lied.””

Her blood went cold.

“Who else?””

Silence.

Then Marcus whispered one final sentence.

“The person standing closest to you is the reason I disappeared.””

The call ended.

Maya slowly lowered the phone.

And realized something terrifying.

Everyone around her had been telling her to look for the enemy.

But nobody had asked the most important question.

May you like

Who had been protecting her…

while secretly destroying her life?
