Amused

Chapter 5: The Person Who Knew Too Much

Maya read the name again.

Then again.

Her eyes refused to accept what they were seeing.

The ink looked ordinary.

The handwriting looked familiar.

But the meaning behind those words felt impossible.

She slowly lifted her head.

Robert was still standing.

Daniel looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Maya whispered:

“Say it.””

Robert looked at her.

“What?””

“Say the name.””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation hurt more than the answer.

“Victoria Lane.””

The café seemed to become smaller.

Maya stared at the photograph in front of her.

Victoria.

The same woman who had held her hand during Marcus’s funeral planning.

The same woman who had sat in her kitchen drinking coffee while Maya cried.

The same woman who had looked her in the eyes and said, “I promise you, we’ll find out what happened.””

A person who knew exactly what happened.

Maya felt sick.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Maya.””

“No.””

She pushed the photograph away.

“You’re wrong.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew what she was doing.

She wasn’t defending Victoria.

She was defending the version of her life she had spent six months trying to survive.

A version where Marcus left because he was scared.

A version where he was a victim.

A version where the people around her weren’t hiding the truth.

Robert sat down slowly.

“Maya, listen to me.””

She looked at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“But you suspected.””

Robert didn’t answer quickly enough.

Her face tightened.

“You suspected.””

“I suspected something was wrong.””

“And you didn’t tell me.””

“I didn’t have proof.””

Maya laughed quietly.

The sound was painful.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She looked between them.

“Everyone had reasons.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Marcus wanted you safe.””

Maya turned toward him.

“Stop saying that.””

He looked surprised.

“Why?””

“Because every person who kept secrets from me used the same excuse.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“Safe from what?””

Nobody answered.

“Safe from the truth?””

The silence said enough.

Maya stood and grabbed her bag.

“I’m leaving.””

Robert looked up.

“Where?””

“To find Victoria.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Maya turned.

“No?””

“She’s dangerous.””

The words came out quickly.

Too quickly.

Maya noticed.

“You know something else.””

Daniel froze.

“I know what I told you.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You know more.””

Daniel looked away.

Maya’s voice dropped.

“Tell me.””

“I can’t.””

Her expression changed.

“You can’t?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“It’s not that simple.””

Maya stared at him.

“Nothing is ever simple when people are hiding things from me.””

Daniel remained silent.

Then Robert spoke.

“Daniel.””

The businessman looked at him.

“You owe her the truth.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I owe her a lot of things.””

“Then start with one.””

For several seconds, Daniel said nothing.

Then he finally sat down.

“When Marcus disappeared, I was the last person to see him.””

Maya went still.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Six months ago. The night he vanished.””

Her voice became barely audible.

“You never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

The answer surprised her.

Not because she believed him.

Because she expected arrogance.

Not fear.

“What happened?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Marcus came to my office after midnight.””

“Why?””

“He had files.””

“What files?””

“Copies of transactions. Emails. Documents.””

Daniel paused.

“He said someone inside the company was stealing money.””

Maya listened carefully.

“He asked me for help.””

“Did you help him?””

Daniel looked away.

“No.””

The honesty was unexpected.

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t believe him.””

Maya stared.

Daniel continued.

“I thought he was angry about a promotion he didn’t get.””

“That’s not true.””

“I know that now.””

His voice became quieter.

“But that night, I told him to stop making accusations without proof.””

Maya’s hands curled into fists.

“And then?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“He left.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

“Where did he go?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

She stared.

“You were the last person to see my husband, and you don’t know where he went?””

“I saw him leave the building.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Maya, someone followed him.””

The words froze her.

“What?””

“I noticed a car outside.””

“What car?””

“A black SUV.””

“Did you see who was inside?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Maya looked at the photo.

Victoria standing behind Marcus.

Her mind started connecting pieces.

“Did Victoria know about the files?””

Daniel’s silence answered before he did.

“Yes.””

Maya felt her stomach drop.

“How?””

“Because Marcus told her.””

“Why would he tell her?””

Daniel looked at her.

“That’s what I couldn’t understand.””

Maya stared at the picture.

“She was his supervisor.””

“Yes.””

“She helped him.””

“Maybe.””

The word bothered her.

“Maybe?””

Daniel looked serious.

“Maya, the person who betrays you is rarely the person you expect.””

She looked at him.

“And you would know.””

The sentence landed.

Daniel accepted it.

“Yes.””

A long silence followed.

Then Robert’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Maya noticed.

“What happened?””

Robert stood.

“That was my security team.””

“And?””

He looked at Daniel.

“They found someone trying to access Marcus’s old records.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“Who?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Maya looked between them.

“Who?””

Robert’s face became serious.

“Victoria Lane.””

The room went silent.

Maya grabbed her bag.

“Where is she?””

Robert hesitated.

“Maya.””

“Where?””

“She’s at Carter Financial headquarters.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“Because Victoria doesn’t work there.””

Robert stared at him.

“Exactly.””

Maya frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

Then at the document.

Then at Maya.

“It means someone wanted her there.””

The pieces were moving too fast.

Victoria at Carter Financial.

Marcus’s warning.

The missing files.

The airport.

Daniel’s sudden board meeting.

Everything was connected.

Maya felt like she was standing in the center of a storm that started long before she knew it existed.

“I’m going.””

Robert immediately said:

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You just told me someone who might know where my husband is has been found.””

“Maya—”

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“I spent six months wondering if Marcus was alive.””

She picked up the photograph.

“I spent six months blaming myself.””

Her eyes filled.

“Every morning, I woke up thinking maybe I missed something. Maybe I should have noticed. Maybe I should have asked more questions.””

She looked at both men.

“But now I know people were making decisions about my life without me.””

Robert softened.

“Maya.””

“I’m done being protected.””

Nobody spoke.

Because this time, she meant it.

An hour later, they arrived at Carter Financial headquarters.

The building towered over downtown Chicago, all glass and steel.

A place built to represent power.

But when Maya walked through the lobby, she didn’t feel intimidated.

She felt angry.

Security opened the private elevator.

Robert stood beside her.

Daniel stayed behind.

“You don’t have to come,” Maya said.

Daniel looked at the elevator doors.

“I know.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked at her.

“Because Marcus trusted me once.””

A pause.

“And I failed him.””

The elevator opened.

They stepped inside.

The doors began closing.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed instantly.

Maya noticed.

“What?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He slowly turned the phone around.

A message had arrived.

No number.

No name.

Just one sentence.

*Stop looking for Marcus, or Maya will learn why he really disappeared.*

Maya stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

This time with a photograph attached.

Daniel opened it.

And everyone froze.

Because the picture showed Marcus.

Alive.

Standing outside a building.

Taken less than twenty-four hours earlier.

May you like

And beside him…

Was Maya’s name written on the wall behind him.
