Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Never Gone
The elevator stopped between floors.
No alarm.
No warning.
Just a sudden silence.
Maya stared at the photograph on Daniel’s phone.
Marcus.
Alive.
The image was grainy, taken from a distance, but there was no mistaking him.
The shape of his face.
The way he stood with one shoulder slightly lower than the other.
The dark jacket he always wore when he was nervous.
It was Marcus.
Her husband.
The man everyone told her to stop searching for.
The man she had mourned while still leaving the porch light on every night.
Her fingers touched the screen.
“He’s alive.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew that sentence was not a question.
It was a realization.
A painful one.
Maya looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“No.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I swear.””
The panic in his voice sounded real.
For once, Maya believed him.
She looked back at the picture.
“Where was this taken?””
Daniel zoomed in.
The image quality became worse, but there were details.
A brick wall.
A street sign.
A reflection in a window.
Robert studied the screen.
“Wait.””
He took the phone.
“Zoom in here.””
Daniel handed it over.
Robert looked carefully.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Maya stepped closer.
Robert pointed at the corner of the photograph.
A small sign was visible.
Only half of it.
But enough.
“Lakeview Research Center.””
Daniel frowned.
“That building closed years ago.””
Robert looked at him.
“How do you know?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because Westbridge owned the property.””
Maya looked between them.
“Why would Marcus be there?””
Nobody answered.
And once again, that silence told her everything.
There were too many secrets.
Too many people who knew pieces of her life while she only had fragments.
The elevator suddenly restarted.
The lights flickered.
A voice came through the speaker.
“Apologies, everyone. Temporary system delay.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the real delay wasn’t the elevator.
It was the truth finally catching up.
When the doors opened, Robert immediately walked toward the security desk.
“Lock down the building.””
The guard looked confused.
“Sir?””
“Find every record connected to Lakeview Research Center.””
The guard straightened.
“Immediately.””
Maya followed.
“Robert.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“You knew about that building.””
Robert looked at her.
“I knew Marcus had investigated it.””
Her face tightened.
“And you didn’t tell me.””
“Maya—”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Don’t explain.””
Her voice was quieter now.
That was worse.
“I don’t need another reason.””
Robert looked genuinely regretful.
“I was trying to protect you.””
She laughed softly.
“Everyone says that.””
Then she walked away.
Robert stood there silently.
Because he knew she was right.
They entered a private conference room overlooking the city.
Daniel remained near the door.
He looked uncomfortable.
Like a man who had finally realized the damage caused by his silence.
Maya placed the photograph on the table.
“Start from the beginning.””
Nobody spoke.
She looked at both men.
“Now.””
Robert sat down.
“Marcus came to me four months before he disappeared.””
Maya froze.
“Four months?””
“Yes.””
“You knew him before that?””
Robert nodded.
“He was investigating financial corruption connected to several companies.””
“And Westbridge?””
“Yes.””
Maya stared.
“Why would my husband investigate that?””
Robert looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
“Because he was assigned to it.””
Maya turned.
“Assigned?””
Daniel nodded.
“Marcus wasn’t just an employee.””
“What was he?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“He was part of an internal audit team.””
Maya felt like she was hearing about a stranger.
“My husband was an investigator?””
“Not exactly.””
Daniel paused.
“But he was trained to find problems inside companies.””
She sat down slowly.
All the late nights.
The locked laptop.
The sudden silence when she entered rooms.
She had thought Marcus was hiding stress.
He was hiding a war.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Robert answered softly.
“Because he believed the people involved were dangerous.””
Maya looked at him.
“So he decided to disappear instead?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was exactly what happened.
Daniel walked toward the table.
“There’s something else.””
Maya looked up.
“What?””
“When Marcus found the money trail, he discovered something bigger.””
“What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The accounts weren’t just connected to Westbridge.””
Robert’s face became serious.
“They were connected to people outside the company.””
Maya frowned.
“Who?””
Daniel looked away.
“We don’t know.””
“Then why is Victoria involved?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Maya stood.
“Why?””
Daniel finally said:
“Because Victoria wasn’t just Marcus’s supervisor.””
The room went quiet.
“What was she?””
Daniel looked at Robert.
Then at Maya.
“She was the person who recruited him.””
Maya felt the blood drain from her face.
“What?””
“Victoria brought Marcus into the audit department.””
“Why?””
“We don’t know.””
Robert interrupted.
“Daniel.””
But Maya heard it.
The hesitation.
The warning.
“You know.””
Robert looked away.
Maya’s voice became firm.
“Robert.””
He sighed.
“There was a theory.””
“What theory?””
“That Marcus wasn’t investigating the company.””
She stared.
“Then what was he doing?””
Robert looked directly at her.
“He was investigating Victoria.””
The room went completely silent.
Maya sat down.
“No.””
Robert continued.
“Marcus discovered irregularities connected to her accounts.””
“And he told you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The week before he disappeared.””
Maya looked at the photograph again.
Marcus standing outside Lakeview.
Alive.
Hidden.
Searching.
She whispered:
“He left me because he was protecting me.””
Nobody responded.
Then Daniel quietly said:
“Yes.””
Maya looked at him.
But instead of comfort, the answer hurt.
Because if it was true, it meant Marcus had made a decision without her.
Again.
A security officer suddenly entered the room.
“Mr. Carter.””
Robert stood.
“What?””
The officer looked nervous.
“We found something.””
“What?””
The officer placed a tablet on the table.
“Someone accessed the Lakeview files thirty minutes ago.””
Robert picked it up.
“Who?””
The officer hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
Maya stepped closer.
“What?””
“The access came from inside this building.””
Daniel looked confused.
“That’s impossible.””
The officer shook his head.
“No.””
He turned the tablet around.
The login information was visible.
Maya read the name.
And her heart stopped.
Because the person who accessed the files…
Was sitting in the room with them.
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
“That’s not possible.””
Robert’s expression hardened.
“Explain.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn’t do this.””
Maya stared at him.
The room suddenly felt different.
Because six months ago, her husband disappeared.
Today, she discovered he was alive.
And now the person who had spent the entire day claiming to help her was connected to the same secrets.
Daniel stepped back.
“Maya, listen to me.””
She didn’t answer.
The security officer looked between them.
“Should I call the police?””
Before anyone could respond, the conference room lights went out.
The city outside vanished.
The room fell into darkness.
A second later, every phone on the table received the same notification.
One message.
One sender.
Marcus.
Maya grabbed her phone with shaking hands.
The message contained only one sentence.
*I’m sorry I left you. But I had no choice. Daniel was not the person you should have feared.*
Her breath caught.
Then another line appeared.
*The person beside you is the one who helped me disappear.*
Maya slowly looked up.
Her eyes moved from Daniel…
To Robert.
And neither man spoke.
Because both of them knew the same thing.
May you like
Marcus was still alive.
And he had just revealed that the real betrayal had never been the one Maya expected.
