Chapter 7: The Man Behind The Disappearance
Maya read the message until the words stopped looking like words.
*The person beside you is the one who helped me disappear.*
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
She looked at Daniel.
Then at Robert.
Two men who had spent the entire day standing beside her.
Two men who claimed they were trying to protect her.
One of them had lied.
Maybe both.
The darkness in the conference room felt heavier than before.
“Turn the lights back on.””
Robert’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
The security officer immediately moved toward the control panel.
A few seconds later, the lights returned.
But nothing felt normal anymore.
Maya didn’t sit down.
She didn’t blink.
She just stared.
“Who helped him?””
Nobody answered.
Her voice became sharper.
“Who helped Marcus disappear?””
Daniel looked at Robert.
Robert looked at the floor.
And that was enough.
Maya took a step backward.
“You know.””
Robert finally looked at her.
“Maya—”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I’m done with half-truths.””
Her voice echoed through the room.
“You don’t get to tell me you were protecting me while everyone around me knew pieces of my husband’s life.””
Robert closed his eyes briefly.
“You’re right.””
The answer surprised her.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just agreement.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
Robert nodded.
“Yes, you should have.””
Daniel remained silent.
Maya turned toward him.
“And you.””
Daniel looked up.
She pointed at him.
“You knew Marcus was investigating Victoria.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he came to you before he disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he was alive?””
“No.””
She studied his face.
This time, she believed him.
Because Daniel looked genuinely confused.
“Then why is your name connected to the file access?””
Daniel looked at the security officer.
“I don’t know.””
The officer cleared his throat.
“Mr. Reeves, the system shows your credentials.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My credentials were stolen months ago.””
Robert immediately looked at him.
“When?””
Daniel hesitated.
“After Marcus disappeared.””
Maya noticed.
“Why didn’t you report that?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because I thought it was related to the investigation.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He exhaled.
“Because I was afraid.””
Again.
That word.
Fear.
A feeling Maya never thought she would associate with Daniel Reeves.
“What were you afraid of?””
Daniel looked at her.
“That whoever took my credentials already knew I was involved.””
Maya stared.
“Finally.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“A complete sentence.””
The comment hit him.
Because she was right.
Every person around her had been giving her pieces.
Never the whole truth.
Robert walked toward the table.
“There is something Marcus wanted me to know.””
Maya looked at him.
“What?””
Robert reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out a small black notebook.
Maya recognized it immediately.
Her breath stopped.
“Where did you get that?””
Robert placed it down.
“Marcus left it with me.””
She stepped closer.
“That’s his.””
“Yes.””
She touched the cover.
A small crack ran across the corner.
She remembered it.
Marcus carried that notebook everywhere.
He wrote grocery lists in it.
Ideas.
Random thoughts.
Things he didn’t want to forget.
She opened the first page.
Most of it was normal.
Numbers.
Dates.
Names.
Then she reached the middle.
And stopped.
There was a page filled with one sentence repeated over and over.
*Trust no one who benefits from your silence.*
Maya felt cold.
Below it was a list of names.
Victoria Lane.
Daniel Reeves.
Robert Carter.
Her hands froze.
All three names.
“All of you.””
Nobody spoke.
“You were all on this list.””
Robert nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Maya looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Marcus was trying to understand who was involved.””
She looked at Daniel.
“And you?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because he suspected me.””
The honesty surprised her.
Maya turned the page.
There was another note.
Different handwriting.
Not Marcus’s.
A woman’s handwriting.
*He knows too much. Remove him before he talks.*
Maya looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Robert stepped closer.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel looked at the page.
But his reaction changed.
He recognized something.
Maya saw it.
“You know.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Daniel.””
He looked away.
“Not exactly.””
She waited.
He sighed.
“The handwriting looks familiar.””
“From who?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Victoria.””
The answer made the room colder.
Maya closed the notebook.
“I’m going to find her.””
Robert immediately said:
“No.””
She turned.
“Why?””
“Because if Marcus was right, she knows you’re looking.””
“I don’t care.””
“You should.””
Maya’s expression hardened.
“My husband disappeared.””
Her voice broke slightly.
“I spent months thinking he was dead.””
She looked at Robert.
“I attended meetings where people talked about him like he was gone.””
Then at Daniel.
“I had strangers tell me to move on.””
Her eyes filled.
“And now you’re telling me he’s alive?””
Nobody spoke.
She wiped her face quickly.
“I’m not waiting.””
Robert looked at her.
“Maya.””
“No.””
She grabbed the notebook.
“I waited six months.””
Then she walked toward the door.
Daniel followed.
Robert stopped him.
“Where are you going?””
Daniel looked back.
“With her.””
Robert frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel looked serious.
“Because Marcus trusted me once.””
A pause.
“And because I owe him.””
Robert studied him.
Then slowly nodded.
Twenty minutes later, Maya sat in the back seat of Robert’s car.
The city lights moved past the window.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Daniel broke the silence.
“I’m sorry.””
Maya looked forward.
“For what?””
“For not telling you sooner.””
She remained quiet.
Daniel continued.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“That’s what everyone thinks.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“That they can fix things without telling the person who is actually living through them.””
Daniel looked down.
She continued.
“You all decided what I could handle.””
A long pause.
“You were wrong.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
That simple answer surprised her.
They arrived at an old office building on the edge of the city.
According to the records, Victoria had rented a private office there.
But when they entered the lobby, the receptionist immediately looked nervous.
Maya noticed.
“Where is Victoria Lane?””
The receptionist froze.
“I don’t know.””
“You do.””
The woman looked away.
Daniel stepped forward.
“She was here today.””
The receptionist’s face changed.
“You’re with her?””
Maya frowned.
“No.””
The receptionist lowered her voice.
“She said someone would come asking.””
A chill went through Maya.
“Who?””
The receptionist shook her head.
“She didn’t say.””
“Where did she go?””
The woman looked toward the elevator.
“She left twenty minutes ago.””
Maya felt her heart sink.
“Where?””
The receptionist hesitated.
Then she pointed.
“To the basement.””
They followed the hallway.
The basement door was unlocked.
Inside was a small storage room.
Empty.
Except for one thing.
A laptop sitting on a table.
Still open.
Maya approached slowly.
On the screen was a video file.
Created today.
Daniel whispered:
“Maya…”
She clicked it.
The screen showed Marcus.
Alive.
Sitting in a dark room.
His face was tired.
His hair longer.
But it was him.
Maya covered her mouth.
“Marcus…”
The video began.
His eyes looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then Victoria failed to stop you.””
Maya froze.
Marcus continued.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
He looked scared.
Not for himself.
For her.
“The person who helped me disappear was someone I trusted.””
A pause.
Then Marcus said the words that made Maya’s entire world collapse.
“Robert Carter helped me fake my death.””
The room went silent.
Daniel slowly turned toward Robert.
Maya stared at the screen.
Because the man who had spent all day protecting her…
Was the man her husband had warned her about.
And then Marcus said the final sentence of the video.
“The reason Robert helped me disappear…”
May you like
His face tightened.
“…was because he was trying to hide what he did to our family.””
