Amused

Chapter 8: The Heir Nobody Knew Existed

For several seconds, nobody understood what Richard Cole had said.

The words seemed impossible.

They hung in the room like a threat.

*“The person you have been protecting all along.””*

Vincent stared at Lily.

The little girl looked back at him with confused eyes.

She did not understand the weight of what had just been revealed.

She only knew everyone was looking at her.

“Richard,” Vincent said slowly.

His voice carried a warning.

“Choose your next words carefully.””

Richard did not move.

“I already have.””

“You’re saying Lily is the heir?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Richard tilted his head.

“Is it?””

Vincent stepped closer.

“Her father was Adrian.””

Richard smiled.

“Exactly.””

The room became colder.

Adrian’s face changed.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“You never told him.””

Adrian’s fists tightened.

“Because it wasn’t his burden.””

Vincent turned.

“What wasn’t my burden?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was enough.

Vincent looked at Adrian.

“Tell me.””

Adrian looked away.

“Vincent…”

“Tell me.””

The command was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Adrian took a breath.

“When your father died, he left something behind.””

Vincent waited.

“A document.””

Richard laughed softly.

“A very important document.””

Adrian ignored him.

“It was a legal agreement connected to the Cole family assets.””

Vincent frowned.

“And?””

Adrian looked at Lily.

“Your father had another child before you were born.””

Clara stepped forward.

“Adrian…”

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“No.””

Adrian continued.

“Her name was Elena.””

The name meant nothing to him.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“Who was Elena?””

Adrian looked at Richard.

“She was your father’s daughter.””

Vincent stared.

“My half-sister?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

The room fell silent.

Vincent had spent his entire life believing he was the last remaining heir.

The only person carrying the Cole name.

The only person responsible for everything his family built.

But now someone was telling him there had always been another branch of his family tree.

A branch someone had erased.

“What happened to her?””

Richard’s smile disappeared slightly.

“She disappeared.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Vincent looked at Adrian.

“Why?””

Adrian’s voice was low.

“Because someone wanted the inheritance.””

Vincent looked at Richard.

The older man did not deny it.

“You killed her?””

Richard sighed.

“Such a dramatic accusation.””

Vincent’s eyes turned cold.

“You started a fire that nearly killed me and Adrian.””

“I saved this family.””

“You destroyed it.””

Richard stepped closer.

“No, Vincent.””

His voice hardened.

“I protected it from people who would have destroyed everything.””

Vincent laughed once.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Richard looked at Lily.

“I expect you to believe her.””

Everyone turned.

Lily.

The little girl looked uncomfortable.

“Me?””

Richard nodded.

“You know the truth.””

Clara immediately stepped in front of her.

“Stay away from her.””

Richard looked at Clara.

“You’ve protected her well.””

Clara’s expression changed.

“You knew?””

“I knew Adrian had a daughter.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You were watching us.””

“Yes.””

The answer was disturbing because he said it without shame.

Richard continued.

“I watched because I needed to know where the last piece of the puzzle was.””

Vincent’s voice became colder.

“And what piece was that?””

Richard looked at Lily.

“The bloodline.””

A guard stepped forward.

“Boss, should we remove him?””

Vincent raised his hand.

“Not yet.””

The guard stopped.

Vincent looked at Richard.

“You walked into my house alone.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I might kill you.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard smiled.

“Because you finally need to hear the truth.””

Vincent stared.

“Then speak.””

Richard looked around the room.

“Your father did not leave the company to you.””

Vincent said nothing.

“He left it to both of his children.””

Richard pointed toward Lily.

“Half to Elena’s bloodline.””

Then toward Vincent.

“Half to yours.””

Vincent frowned.

“But Elena disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“And Lily…”

Richard nodded.

“Is the proof that Elena’s line survived.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“That’s why you wanted her.””

Richard looked at him.

“That’s why everyone wanted her.””

The room went silent.

Clara held Lily tighter.

Vincent noticed.

The fear on Clara’s face was not confusion.

It was recognition.

She had known.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

“Clara.””

She looked at him.

“Did you know?””

Tears formed in her eyes.

“I knew Adrian was hiding something.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She swallowed.

“I knew Lily was important.””

Vincent stared.

“Important?””

Clara looked at Lily.

“When Adrian gave her to me, he told me one thing.””

“What?””

“Protect her because people will not see a child.””

She looked back at Vincent.

“They will see a key.””

Nobody spoke.

A loud alarm suddenly sounded.

Again.

But this time, it was different.

Not a security alarm.

A warning.

One of the guards looked at his tablet.

“Boss.””

“What?””

“The gates have opened.””

Vincent’s expression changed.

“That’s impossible.””

The guard shook his head.

“Someone used your authorization.””

Vincent looked around.

Only a few people had that level of access.

His eyes moved.

Richard.

Adrian.

Evelyn.

Clara.

Then Lily suddenly whispered:

“Mr. Cole.””

He turned.

“What?””

She pointed toward the front entrance.

“He’s here.””

Everyone froze.

Vincent looked.

Through the glass doors, a figure stood outside.

A man.

Wearing a dark coat.

No hat.

No attempt to hide.

The man with the scar.

But Adrian was already inside.

So who was this?

The doors opened.

The man walked in.

Every guard raised their weapons.

Richard smiled.

“Finally.””

Vincent looked at him.

“You know him?””

Richard did not answer.

The stranger walked closer.

His eyes moved toward Lily.

Then Vincent.

“I’m sorry it had to happen this way.””

Vincent stared.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Adrian.

Then back at Vincent.

“My name is Marcus Vale.””

Adrian froze.

The color disappeared from his face.

“No.””

Vincent noticed.

“Who is he?””

Adrian whispered:

“My brother.””

The room went silent.

Richard smiled.

“Now everything can finally be explained.””

Vincent looked between Adrian and Marcus.

“How many secrets have you all been hiding from me?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“More than you know.””

Vincent’s voice became dangerous.

“Start talking.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“She was never just the heir.””

Vincent frowned.

“Then what is she?””

Marcus’s expression turned serious.

“She is the only person alive who knows what happened the night the fire started.””

Everyone froze.

Vincent looked at Lily.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the little girl.

“Because she was there.””

Clara gasped.

“Stop.””

Marcus continued.

“She was only a baby.””

Vincent stared.

A baby?

At the warehouse?

Impossible.

Then Marcus said the words that changed everything.

“The fire was not started to kill Vincent.””

He looked at Adrian.

“It was started because someone discovered the child existed.””

The room went silent.

Vincent looked at Lily.

A six-year-old girl.

A girl who could not remember a night from twelve years ago.

A girl who had somehow drawn secrets she was never supposed to know.

Then Lily spoke softly.

“I remember.””

Everyone turned.

Clara knelt beside her.

“Lily…”

The little girl looked at Vincent.

“I remember the fire.””

Vincent felt his entire world stop.

“What do you remember?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“A man screaming.””

Silence.

“Someone carrying me.””

Her voice shook.

“And someone saying…”

She paused.

Vincent lowered himself.

“What did they say?””

Lily looked directly at Richard.

The old man’s smile disappeared.

“They said…”

Her voice became a whisper.

“‘The Cole family must never know she survived.’”

Richard took one step backward.

For the first time that night…

he looked afraid.

And Vincent realized something.

Richard had not come to reveal the truth.

He had come because he knew Lily remembered it.

May you like

And the secret she carried…

could destroy him.
