Chapter 6: The Friend Who Came Back From The Grave

Nobody moved.

For twelve years, Vincent Cole had imagined this moment.

He had imagined finding Adrian Vale’s body.

He had imagined uncovering the truth.

He had imagined standing face-to-face with the man who had supposedly betrayed him.

But he had never imagined this.

Adrian was alive.

Standing in his mansion.

Standing in the same hallway where Vincent had spent years walking past memories of him.

The man looked older.

The confidence was still there.

The sharp eyes were still there.

But time had left marks.

A scar crossed his jaw.

Another faded mark ran near his temple.

He looked like someone who had survived something nobody was meant to survive.

Vincent stared.

“Adrian.””

The name came out quietly.

Adrian smiled.

“Still remember me.””

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“You were dead.””

Adrian looked around the mansion.

“At least that’s what they wanted you to believe.””

The guards raised their weapons.

Vincent lifted his hand.

“Lower them.””

Everyone looked surprised.

Even Adrian.

Vincent’s eyes never left his old friend.

“If he wanted us dead, we would already be dead.””

Adrian nodded slightly.

“Good.””

“What?””

“You still think before you act.””

Vincent stepped forward.

“You have a lot of explaining to do.””

Adrian looked at Lily.

The little girl immediately hid behind Clara.

But she did not look afraid.

She looked like she recognized him.

“You told her not to tell anyone.””

Adrian’s expression softened.

“Yes.””

Vincent noticed.

The way Adrian looked at Lily.

Not like a stranger.

Like a father.

“You knew she was here.””

Adrian nodded.

“I knew.””

“And you let me believe you were dead?””

Pain crossed Adrian’s face.

“Do you think I wanted to?””

Vincent said nothing.

Adrian walked slowly into the room.

The guards followed every movement.

“I spent twelve years trying to protect her.””

Vincent looked at Lily.

“From who?””

Adrian’s eyes moved toward Evelyn.

The room changed.

Evelyn remained standing near the doorway.

Calm.

Controlled.

But her hands were clenched.

“From the people who destroyed everything.””

Vincent looked at Evelyn.

“You’re saying she caused the fire.””

Adrian looked at him.

“I’m saying she was part of it.””

Evelyn laughed.

A cold, quiet laugh.

“This is unbelievable.””

Everyone turned.

She shook her head.

“After twelve years, you walk into this house and expect Vincent to believe you?””

Adrian looked at her.

“I don’t expect him to believe me.””

He reached inside his coat.

Several guards immediately reacted.

Vincent stopped them.

Adrian pulled out a small envelope.

“I expect him to look at the evidence.””

He placed it on the table.

Vincent did not touch it.

“What is that?””

“The reason I disappeared.””

The room fell silent.

Vincent slowly opened the envelope.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Burned at the edges.

Company records.

Bank transfers.

Names.

His eyes moved across the pages.

Then stopped.

One signature.

Evelyn Hart.

The mansion manager’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But it was there.

Vincent saw it.

“You forged these.””

Evelyn’s voice remained steady.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at the papers.

“I don’t know what those are.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You always were good at lying.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“And you always were good at running away.””

That sentence hit harder than expected.

Vincent noticed.

There was history between them.

Not just business.

Something deeper.

“What happened that night?””

Adrian looked at Vincent.

“The warehouse fire wasn’t an accident.””

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“I know that.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You know someone betrayed you.””

He pointed at the documents.

“You don’t know how far it went.””

Vincent looked down.

“Tell me.””

Adrian took a breath.

“Your company was not attacked from outside.””

He looked around the room.

“It was taken apart from inside.””

Nobody spoke.

“Someone leaked your financial information. Someone redirected shipments. Someone created fake evidence that made it look like I was stealing from you.””

Vincent remembered.

The accusations.

The missing money.

The files that appeared.

The night everything collapsed.

“I thought it was you.””

“I know.””

Adrian looked away.

“That was the plan.””

Vincent stared.

“What?””

“Make you hate me.””

The words landed heavily.

“Why?””

“Because as long as you hated me, you wouldn’t look deeper.””

A silence followed.

Then Clara spoke.

“Adrian…”

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Clara shook her head.

“You survived.””

“I left you alone.””

“You had no choice.””

Vincent looked between them.

“You two knew each other.””

Adrian nodded.

“She saved my life.””

Clara lowered her eyes.

“And he saved Lily’s.””

Vincent looked at the little girl.

The child who had unknowingly walked into the center of a war.

A war that began before she was born.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“You’re all forgetting something.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“Even if Adrian is telling the truth, there is still one problem.””

Vincent watched her.

“What?””

She pointed at the documents.

“These papers prove someone inside the company betrayed you.””

She smiled faintly.

“But they don’t prove it was me.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

Because she was right.

Vincent noticed.

The evidence was strong.

But not complete.

Evelyn saw the hesitation.

“You know me, Vincent.””

She looked directly at him.

“Better than anyone here.””

That sentence bothered him.

Because it was true.

He had trusted Evelyn for years.

She knew his schedule.

His habits.

His weaknesses.

She knew things even Adrian didn’t.

Then Lily stepped forward.

Everyone turned.

“Mr. Cole?””

Vincent looked down.

“What is it?””

She pointed at Evelyn.

“She wasn’t alone.””

Evelyn’s face changed.

“What did you say?””

Lily looked at her.

“You had someone helping you.””

The room became silent.

Vincent knelt.

“Lily, what did you see?””

The little girl thought carefully.

“The woman with the bird necklace.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“She talked to the man with the scar.””

Evelyn stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

Vincent asked.

Evelyn did not answer.

Lily continued.

“They were fighting.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Fighting about what?””

Lily looked down.

“She said…”

Everyone waited.

“She said she didn’t want to do it anymore.””

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“Do what?””

Lily whispered:

“Finish what they started.””

Evelyn suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

She reached inside her jacket.

The guards reacted immediately.

But before anyone could grab her, Adrian stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Everyone froze.

Because Evelyn wasn’t holding a weapon.

She was holding a photograph.

An old photograph.

Vincent recognized it instantly.

His missing photograph.

The one from his office.

Evelyn looked at him.

“You want the truth?””

Her voice had changed.

No more calm.

No more polite manager.

Just exhaustion.

“You have no idea what you’re about to uncover.””

Vincent stared.

“Give me the photo.””

Evelyn held it tighter.

“No.””

“Evelyn.””

“You spent twelve years looking for the wrong enemy.””

Adrian’s face became serious.

“Vincent, don’t listen to her.””

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“You’re still protecting him.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“And you’re still afraid.””

The tension between them filled the room.

Vincent looked at the photograph.

“What is in it?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

She slowly turned the photograph around.

The image showed Vincent, Adrian, and a third person standing outside the old warehouse.

A person Vincent recognized immediately.

His stomach dropped.

Because the third person in the picture was someone who had been beside him every single day.

Someone he had never suspected.

Someone who had welcomed Lily into the mansion.

Someone who had opened the gates tonight.

Vincent whispered:

“No…”

Evelyn watched his reaction.

“Now you understand.””

Vincent looked at the photograph again.

The third person was clear.

And impossible.

Because the person standing beside him and Adrian twelve years ago…

was supposed to have been dead before the fire even started.

Adrian’s voice became low.

“Vincent.””

He looked up.

“Your real enemy never disappeared.””

A shadow moved behind the hallway glass.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood outside.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then the figure lifted a hand.

And waved.

Lily gasped.

“That’s him.””

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

The little girl whispered:

“The other man.””

The man with the scar was not the only survivor.

Someone else had come back from the past.

May you like

And this time…

they had not come to hide.
