Chapter 4: The Secret Clara Buried
“Who is your father?””
Vincent Cole’s question hung in the hallway.
For the first time since the danger began, nobody was watching the doors.
Nobody was watching the cameras.
Nobody was watching for the man with the scar.
Everyone was watching Lily.
The little girl stood beside Clara, holding her mother’s hand so tightly that her small fingers had turned pale.
Clara looked terrified.
Not because Vincent had asked.
Because she already knew the answer.
“Lily,” Clara whispered.
The child looked up.
“Mommy…”
Clara shook her head slightly.
A silent warning.
A desperate request.
But Lily had always been different.
She hated lies.
Even the ones adults told because they thought they were protecting her.
Vincent noticed the exchange.
His eyes moved between them.
“You knew.””
Clara’s face changed.
“Mr. Cole…”
“You knew something about this.””
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
His voice was not loud.
That made it worse.
Everyone in the mansion knew Vincent Cole’s anger.
But they feared his calm more.
Clara looked at Lily.
Then at the guards.
“Can we speak somewhere private?””
Vincent did not move.
“No.””
Clara swallowed.
“Please.””
Vincent stared at her.
Then he looked at Lily.
The child’s expression was not afraid.
It was sad.
That was what made him hesitate.
He nodded toward his office.
“Inside.””
The room was crowded with questions nobody wanted to ask.
Clara walked in slowly.
Lily followed.
Vincent closed the door behind them.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The old photograph was still missing from the desk.
The mysterious message was still inside his mind.
And now a child was standing in front of him with a secret connected to the man he thought was dead.
“Start from the beginning,” Vincent said.
Clara looked down.
“I met Adrian twelve years ago.””
Vincent’s expression hardened.
Hearing that name from her lips felt like someone reopening an old wound.
“Where?””
“At the warehouse.””
Silence.
Vincent stared.
“You were there?””
Clara nodded.
“I worked for the accounting department at the time.””
Vincent remembered.
The warehouse fire.
The missing files.
The night dozens of employees ran for their lives.
But Clara?
Her name had never appeared in the investigation.
“Why wasn’t your name in the report?””
“Because Adrian removed it.””
Vincent stepped closer.
“What?””
Clara’s eyes filled with fear.
“He knew something bad was going to happen.””
Vincent’s jaw tightened.
“Explain.””
Clara took a deep breath.
“The night of the fire, Adrian found out someone was stealing money from the company.””
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Clara looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Vincent watched her carefully.
He knew when people avoided a question.
And Clara was avoiding many.
“But you know Adrian didn’t cause the fire.””
Clara nodded immediately.
“No.””
“Then why did everyone believe he betrayed me?””
“Because someone made it look that way.””
Vincent walked toward the window.
Outside, guards searched the property.
The mansion looked secure.
But he no longer trusted appearances.
“What happened after the fire?””
Clara’s voice became softer.
“Adrian survived.””
Vincent turned.
The room went still.
“You’re saying you knew?””
“I found him.””
“When?””
“The morning after the fire.””
Vincent stared.
“Where?””
“In a hospital outside the city.””
“And you never told me?””
Clara closed her eyes.
“I wanted to.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Clara looked at Lily.
“Because I was scared.””
Vincent followed her gaze.
“What does Lily have to do with this?””
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“Everything.””
The answer was almost a whisper.
Vincent’s expression changed.
“No.””
Clara said nothing.
“Clara.””
His voice became colder.
“Tell me.””
She looked at Lily.
Then finally said:
“Adrian was Lily’s father.””
The room became silent.
Vincent felt like the air had disappeared.
The child.
The drawings.
The way she noticed things.
The way she described the man with the scar.
Suddenly, everything felt connected.
“You raised his daughter in my mansion?””
Clara shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Then why is she here?””
“Because Adrian asked me to protect her.””
Vincent stared.
“From who?””
Clara hesitated.
That hesitation answered before her words did.
“From the people who wanted him dead.””
A sharp knock interrupted them.
Nobody moved.
Another knock.
Vincent immediately reached for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.
“Who is it?””
A guard answered from outside.
“Boss, we found something.””
Vincent opened the door slightly.
“What?””
The guard held a small envelope.
“It was hidden inside the security room.””
Vincent took it.
The guard continued.
“No fingerprints.””
Vincent looked at the envelope.
“Where is Daniel?””
“In custody.””
“Good.””
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
His blood ran cold.
It showed Adrian.
Alive.
Standing beside Clara.
Holding a baby.
Lily.
On the back of the photograph was a message.
*YOU WEREN’T THE ONLY ONE BETRAYED.*
Vincent looked at Clara.
She lowered her head.
“You knew.””
“I knew Adrian survived.””
“You knew he had a child.””
“Yes.””
“You knew this child was his.””
“Yes.””
“And you brought her here?””
Clara stepped forward.
“Because someone was hunting her.””
Vincent looked at Lily.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Clara’s voice broke.
“Because Adrian made me promise.””
Vincent laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“Adrian made you promise to hide his daughter from me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Clara looked at him.
“Because he believed the person who betrayed him was someone you trusted more than anyone.””
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Clara looked toward the door.
Then lowered her voice.
“The person who helped you build this mansion.””
A cold silence followed.
Vincent immediately thought of the people closest to him.
People who had access.
People who knew his routines.
People who could move around without suspicion.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The number was unknown.
Vincent answered.
No one spoke at first.
Only breathing.
Then a familiar voice.
Older.
Calmer.
Impossible.
“Hello, Vincent.””
Vincent’s hand tightened around the phone.
Because after twelve years…
he knew exactly who it was.
“Adrian.””
Clara covered her mouth.
Lily looked up.
Vincent said nothing.
The voice continued.
“You finally found the truth.””
Vincent’s eyes hardened.
“Where are you?””
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“Still asking the wrong question.””
“What does that mean?””
“You think I’m the danger because I came back.””
A pause.
Then Adrian whispered:
“But the person who destroyed your life has been sitting beside you this entire time.””
Vincent looked around the room.
At Clara.
At Lily.
At the guards outside.
The phone crackled.
Then Adrian said:
“Ask yourself one thing, Vincent.””
“What?””
“Who was the first person to tell you I was dead?””
Vincent froze.
Because he remembered.
He remembered the night after the fire.
The person who arrived first.
The person who gave him the news.
The person who held his shoulder and told him not to look for Adrian anymore.
The person he trusted completely.
The person whose name he had never questioned.
The call ended.
Vincent slowly lowered the phone.
Clara watched his face.
“Who was it?””
Vincent did not answer immediately.
Because saying the name aloud meant accepting a possibility he had refused for twelve years.
Then the mansion alarm suddenly started screaming.
A guard rushed into the room.
“Boss!””
Vincent turned.
“What happened?””
The guard looked terrified.
“Daniel escaped.””
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“How?””
The guard swallowed.
“Someone opened his cell.””
A pause.
Then he added:
“And the person who released him left a message.””
Vincent walked forward.
“What message?””
The guard looked at Lily.
Then back at him.
“It said…”
May you like
He hesitated.
“Thank you for bringing my daughter home.””
