Amused

Chapter 3: The Name Hidden In The Past

The words on the wall seemed to burn brighter than the lights above them.

*YOU NEVER FOUND THE REAL TRAITOR.*

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the guards who had faced dangerous situations beside Vincent Cole stood frozen.

Because the message was not a random threat.

It was personal.

Vincent stared at the red letters.

His face remained calm, but his eyes changed.

Clara noticed.

She had seen fear in people before.

Fear made them run.

Fear made them scream.

But Vincent Cole’s fear was different.

It disappeared behind silence.

“Boss?”” one guard whispered.

Vincent did not answer.

His attention stayed on the wall.

The handwriting.

The choice of words.

The confidence of whoever had written it.

Only one person knew enough to say something like this.

Only one person could make Vincent remember a night he had spent years trying to forget.

Lily tugged on his sleeve.

“Mr. Cole?””

He looked down.

“Yes?””

“The man who wrote that…”

She hesitated.

“He’s the same man from my drawing.””

Vincent looked at her.

“What man?””

“The one watching.””

A chill moved through him.

“Lily, did you see him inside the house?””

The little girl nodded slowly.

“He was upstairs.””

“When?””

“Before the lights went away.””

Clara immediately stepped between them.

“Mr. Cole, maybe we should take her somewhere safe.””

Vincent looked at Clara.

She was right.

The mansion was no longer secure.

Not with someone inside.

Not with someone who had bypassed every security system Vincent had installed.

“Take Lily to the safe room.””

Clara’s eyes widened.

“Safe room?””

Vincent looked toward the guards.

“No one leaves her side.””

The guards nodded.

Clara picked Lily up.

But before she walked away, Lily looked over Clara’s shoulder.

“Mr. Cole?””

Vincent turned.

“What?””

The little girl looked at the message on the wall.

“He wrote it wrong.””

Everyone stared.

Vincent frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Lily pointed at the letters.

“He was angry when he wrote it.””

Vincent waited.

“He pressed harder on some letters.””

She looked closer.

“The T.””

A guard stepped forward.

“Boss?””

Vincent walked toward the wall.

He examined the letter.

Then the others.

Lily was right.

The message had been written quickly.

But there was something different about one part.

The letter T was deeper.

Stronger.

Like the person writing it had paused.

Vincent’s expression changed.

“Get me the security footage.””

The guard hesitated.

“Sir…”

“What?””

“The cameras went offline during the blackout.””

Vincent looked at him.

“All of them?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Nobody argued.

Because everyone knew Vincent’s security system.

The mansion had multiple backup systems.

Even if the power failed, cameras continued recording.

Someone had not simply turned them off.

Someone had entered the system.

A guard approached holding a tablet.

“Boss.””

Vincent took it.

The screen showed a black image.

Then a single file appeared.

No camera number.

No location.

Just a timestamp.

The guard frowned.

“That wasn’t there before.””

Vincent opened it.

The video began.

Static.

Then a figure appeared.

Standing in the mansion hallway.

Wearing a dark coat.

A hat covered most of his face.

But one detail was clear.

A scar running along his jaw.

Lily’s description.

Clara covered her mouth.

“Oh my…”

Vincent watched silently.

The figure slowly turned toward the camera.

Then smiled.

The video ended.

No words.

No explanation.

Just that smile.

Vincent handed the tablet back.

“Find him.””

The guards moved.

But one person remained silent.

Daniel.

He stood near the security room entrance under guard.

Vincent looked at him.

“Bring him here.””

Daniel was brought forward.

His face was tense.

“You believe me now?”” Daniel asked.

Vincent looked at him.

“I believe you know something.””

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t.””

“Then why did you recognize him?””

Daniel froze.

The room went quiet.

Vincent stepped closer.

“When Lily mentioned the scar, you reacted.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You knew who she was describing.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“I saw the scar before.””

“Where?””

Daniel looked toward the floor.

“Years ago.””

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“Where?””

The bodyguard swallowed.

“At the old Cole warehouse.””

The room became silent.

That place.

Nobody mentioned it.

Not anymore.

The old warehouse fire had destroyed records, equipment, and almost killed Vincent himself.

It was the night his company nearly collapsed.

The night someone inside his organization betrayed him.

The night his closest friend died.

Vincent’s voice became colder.

“Say his name.””

Daniel looked up.

“Sir…”

“Say it.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Adrian Vale.””

The name hit the room like a gunshot.

Clara looked confused.

“Who is Adrian Vale?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone who knew Vincent’s history knew that name.

Adrian Vale had been Vincent’s partner.

His best friend.

The person who helped him build everything.

Until the night of the warehouse fire.

Officially, Adrian died that night.

The investigation found no survivors.

Vincent had spent years believing the betrayal had cost him his friend.

But now…

A man with Adrian’s scar was inside his mansion.

Vincent looked at Daniel.

“You knew he was alive?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why did you hide this?””

“I didn’t know if it was him.””

Vincent stared.

Daniel continued quickly.

“Sir, listen to me. I saw him near the warehouse before the fire. He had that scar. But everyone said he died.””

“You should have told me.””

“I thought I was wrong.””

Vincent stepped back.

For a moment, the anger on his face was replaced by something older.

Pain.

Then a loud noise came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

A crash.

Like something heavy falling.

Vincent immediately moved.

“Stay here.””

The guards followed him.

They reached the second floor hallway.

The lights flickered.

A door at the end of the hall slowly moved.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody breathed.

Vincent raised his hand.

The guards prepared themselves.

The door opened.

Inside was Vincent’s private office.

Everything appeared normal.

Except for one thing.

His desk drawer was open.

The drawer that contained the only remaining evidence from the warehouse fire.

Vincent walked inside.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The old photograph was gone.

The photograph of him and Adrian before everything changed.

On the desk was a single piece of paper.

Vincent picked it up.

There were only three words written on it.

*ASK YOUR DAUGHTER.*

The room went completely silent.

Clara, who had followed behind the guards, stopped.

Vincent turned around.

“Daughter?””

Everyone looked confused.

Because nobody in the mansion knew Vincent had a daughter.

Nobody except one person.

Lily.

The little girl stood beside Clara, holding her mother’s hand.

And she was staring at Vincent.

Not with fear.

With recognition.

Vincent slowly walked toward her.

“What does this mean?””

Lily looked down.

Her fingers tightened around Clara’s hand.

“I wasn’t supposed to tell you.””

Clara looked shocked.

“Tell him what?””

Lily looked at Vincent.

Then quietly said:

“The man with the scar told me my real daddy was still alive.””

The entire hallway went silent.

Vincent stared at the little girl.

Because there was only one question that mattered now.

And the answer could destroy everything he believed about his own past.

“Lily…”

May you like

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Who is your father?””
