Chapter 2: The Person In The Shadows
“There was another person watching him.””
Lily’s tiny voice barely carried across the courtyard.
But every person standing there heard it.
The servants looked around nervously.
The guards tightened their posture.
Daniel’s face became even paler.
Vincent Cole remained completely still.
For most people, a child’s words would have sounded impossible.
A story.
A frightened imagination.
But Vincent had survived long enough to understand something important.
People often ignored the smallest voices.
And sometimes, those voices were the only ones telling the truth.
He lowered himself slightly until he was at Lily’s eye level.
“Who was watching him?””
Lily looked toward the trees behind the mansion.
The evening shadows stretched across the garden, covering the paths and bushes in darkness.
She pointed.
“Over there.””
Every guard immediately turned.
Two men moved toward the garden with their hands near their weapons.
Daniel took another step back.
Vincent noticed.
“Daniel.””
The bodyguard stopped.
“Yes, sir?””
“Why are you looking more afraid of the garden than the device?””
Daniel forced himself to look calm.
“I’m not afraid.””
Vincent stared at him.
“Then prove it.””
Daniel said nothing.
The guards disappeared between the trees.
For several seconds, the entire courtyard waited.
Clara held Lily tightly against her chest.
Her daughter was quiet now.
Too quiet.
Clara whispered, “Lily, what did you see?””
The little girl looked up.
“I saw him.””
“Who?””
“The man who put the box there.””
Clara looked toward Daniel.
“Daniel?””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“No?””
Lily pointed at Daniel.
“He was not alone.””
Daniel’s breathing changed.
Only slightly.
But Vincent caught it.
“You said you saw another person,” Vincent said.
“Tell me what they looked like.””
Lily frowned, trying to remember.
“He stayed far away.””
“Was it a man or a woman?””
“A man.””
“Did you see his face?””
The little girl shook her head.
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because he was wearing a hat.””
Vincent studied her carefully.
“What else?””
Lily looked down at the chalk in her hand.
“He had a scar.””
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“That’s enough.””
The courtyard went silent.
Vincent slowly turned toward him.
“Enough?””
Daniel immediately corrected himself.
“I mean… she’s scared. She doesn’t know what she saw.””
Vincent walked closer.
“Funny.””
Daniel swallowed.
“What is?””
“You’re the first person here trying to stop her from talking.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“I’m trying to protect your time, sir.””
“No.””
Vincent looked at him coldly.
“You’re trying to protect yourself.””
Daniel looked away.
Before Vincent could say more, one of the guards returned from the garden.
His expression was serious.
“Boss.””
“What did you find?””
The guard hesitated.
That hesitation told Vincent everything.
“Speak.””
The guard glanced at Daniel.
Then back at Vincent.
“We found footprints.””
A murmur spread through the servants.
Vincent’s eyes remained fixed.
“How fresh?””
“Fresh enough.””
“Show me.””
The guard stepped aside.
Vincent walked toward the garden entrance.
Then stopped.
He looked back at Lily.
The little girl was still holding her chalk.
“Lily.””
She looked at him.
“Stay with your mother.””
She nodded.
Then whispered, “He was watching the whole time.””
Vincent paused.
“Who?””
“The other man.””
A cold feeling moved through the courtyard.
Vincent turned back toward the garden.
“Find him.””
The guards moved immediately.
Daniel watched them leave.
His hands were shaking.
And Vincent saw.
A man who had nothing to hide did not shake when someone searched for a stranger.
A man who was innocent did not look like he was waiting for a door to close.
Vincent walked back toward Daniel.
“Four years.””
Daniel looked up.
“Sir?””
“You’ve worked for me for four years.””
“Yes.””
“You’ve protected me from threats, handled difficult situations, and earned my trust.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I’m grateful.””
Vincent’s voice became quiet.
“That’s why this disappoints me.””
Daniel looked up quickly.
“I didn’t do this.””
“Then you won’t mind answering questions.””
“I won’t.””
“Good.””
Vincent nodded toward the guards.
“Take him inside.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Sir?””
“Until we know who planted that device, nobody leaves this mansion.””
Daniel looked around.
“You think I’m the enemy?””
Vincent stared at him.
“I think someone inside this house is.””
The guards escorted Daniel away.
Clara watched silently.
When they were gone, she looked at Vincent.
“Mr. Cole…”
He turned.
She hesitated.
“Why do you believe her?””
Vincent looked toward Lily.
The child was drawing again.
But this time, she was not drawing on the ground.
She was drawing in a small notebook Clara carried.
“She noticed something everyone else ignored.””
Clara looked down at her daughter.
“She’s just a child.””
Vincent’s expression softened slightly.
“Exactly.””
He looked at the mansion.
“Children don’t understand the rules adults create to hide the truth.””
The words stayed with Clara.
Because she knew something Vincent did not.
Lily had always noticed things.
Small things.
A missing spoon.
A changed picture frame.
A person entering a room who had not been there before.
She remembered details adults forgot.
But Clara never imagined those details would one day put her daughter in danger.
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A phone ringing.
One of Vincent’s guards pulled out his device.
“Boss.””
Vincent answered.
“What is it?””
The guard’s voice was tense.
“We checked the device.””
“And?””
“It’s not a simple explosive.””
Vincent’s eyes hardened.
“What do you mean?””
The guard lowered his voice.
“It’s connected to something else.””
Vincent looked at the black device sitting on the table.
“What?””
“A remote system.””
The courtyard went quiet.
The guard continued.
“Someone was not trying to destroy the car.””
Vincent stared.
“Then what were they trying to do?””
A pause.
Then the guard answered.
“They were trying to activate something already inside the mansion.””
For the first time that evening, Vincent’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Not suspicion.
Fear.
Just for a moment.
Then it disappeared.
“What part of the mansion?””
The guard hesitated.
“We’re still checking.””
Vincent ended the call.
Immediately, he turned toward the building.
“Lock every entrance.””
The servants froze.
“Now.””
The mansion staff rushed into action.
Doors closed.
Security systems activated.
Clara looked confused.
“What is happening?””
Vincent did not answer immediately.
Because he had already realized something.
The device under his car had been a distraction.
A way to make everyone look outside.
A way to keep them focused on one danger while another one waited inside.
Then Lily suddenly grabbed his hand.
Vincent looked down.
“What is it?””
She pointed toward the mansion window.
Her face became frightened.
“The man with the scar.””
Vincent followed her gaze.
The window on the second floor was dark.
Empty.
Or at least it looked empty.
“Where?””
Lily whispered.
“He was standing there before.””
Vincent stared at the window.
“When?””
“Before Mommy came outside.””
A cold silence settled over him.
“Lily…”
She looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
The little girl nodded.
“He was looking at me.””
Vincent turned toward the guards.
“Check the second floor.””
They moved immediately.
But before they reached the mansion doors, every light in the building suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then everything went black.
The courtyard erupted in panic.
Clara pulled Lily close.
The guards raised their flashlights.
And from somewhere inside the mansion…
a voice echoed through the darkness.
A voice that did not belong to any employee.
“Vincent Cole.””
Everyone froze.
The voice continued.
“You should have listened when the little girl warned you.””
Vincent stood motionless.
Because he recognized that voice.
A voice from a past he thought he had buried.
A voice belonging to someone who should have been dead.
Then the mansion lights returned.
May you like
And on the wall behind Vincent, written in fresh red paint, were six words:
*YOU NEVER FOUND THE REAL TRAITOR.*
