Amused

Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Never Dead

The mansion alarm continued screaming.

Red lights flashed across the walls.

Every hallway filled with running footsteps.

But Vincent Cole heard only one sentence.

*Thank you for bringing my daughter home.*

The words followed him like a shadow.

His daughter.

Not Lily.

Not Clara.

His daughter.

Vincent looked at the little girl standing beside him.

She was holding the edge of Clara’s coat, watching the adults panic around her.

She did not understand the danger.

She did not understand the secrets.

She only understood that everyone suddenly looked afraid.

Vincent had spent his entire life reading people.

Business partners.

Enemies.

Friends.

Liars.

But now he was looking at a six-year-old child who had uncovered a conspiracy with a piece of chalk.

And somehow, she was the only person in the mansion who had been telling the truth from the beginning.

“Find Daniel,” Vincent ordered.

The guards immediately moved.

“Lock the gates.””

“They’re already locked, sir.””

“Then check every exit.””

“Yes, sir.””

Vincent turned toward Clara.

“Where would Adrian go?””

Clara looked surprised.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

Vincent stepped closer.

“You protected him for twelve years.””

“I protected Lily.””

“You protected both of them.””

Clara’s eyes filled with anger.

“You think this was easy?””

The room went quiet.

Clara had spent years being careful.

Years staying silent.

Years carrying a secret that could destroy her life.

But now something inside her finally broke.

“You think I wanted to hide everything?””

Vincent said nothing.

“Adrian was dying when I found him.””

Vincent froze.

“What?””

“He was badly injured after the fire. He couldn’t walk. He could barely speak.””

Clara wiped her eyes.

“He told me someone close to him betrayed him. Someone who knew every weakness in the company.””

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“Who?””

“He didn’t know.””

“Then why didn’t he come to me?””

Clara looked at him.

“Because he thought you were being watched.””

That sentence stopped him.

Vincent had spent years believing Adrian abandoned him.

Believing his best friend had chosen betrayal.

But what if Adrian had been running?

What if he had been protecting someone?

A loud crash came from the security room.

Everyone turned.

A guard rushed in.

“Boss!””

Vincent immediately moved.

“What happened?””

The guard held up a broken camera.

“The person who released Daniel didn’t enter from outside.””

Vincent stared.

“What do you mean?””

“They were already inside.””

The room became silent.

Again.

Another enemy inside his own home.

Another person who had access.

Another person who had been waiting.

Vincent looked at the guards.

“How many people knew Daniel was locked up?””

The guards exchanged looks.

One answered.

“Only senior security staff.””

“How many?””

“Six.””

“Names.””

The guard immediately listed them.

Vincent listened.

Most were people he trusted.

But trust had become dangerous.

Then Lily suddenly spoke.

“The man with the scar was not alone.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vincent lowered himself.

“What else did you see?””

Lily hesitated.

“He talked to someone.””

“Who?””

She looked toward the security room.

“A woman.””

Clara’s face changed.

“A woman?””

Lily nodded.

“She had a necklace.””

Vincent looked at her carefully.

“What kind of necklace?””

“A bird.””

Nobody spoke.

Because one person in the mansion wore a necklace exactly like that.

Vincent slowly turned.

The guards followed his gaze.

Toward the entrance.

Where the mansion manager stood.

Evelyn Hart.

She had worked for the Cole family for eleven years.

She was the person who managed the household.

The person who knew every schedule.

Every room.

Every security procedure.

Every person who entered the mansion.

And around her neck was a silver bird pendant.

Evelyn noticed everyone looking at her.

Her expression remained calm.

Almost too calm.

“Is there a problem?””

Vincent stared.

“Where were you during the blackout?””

Evelyn blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

“I was in the kitchen.””

“Anyone confirm that?””

A pause.

Only a small one.

But Vincent noticed.

“No.””

The guards moved slightly closer.

Evelyn looked offended.

“Mr. Cole, after all these years, you’re questioning me because of a child’s imagination?””

Lily immediately stepped behind Clara.

Vincent’s eyes sharpened.

“You called it imagination.””

Evelyn frowned.

“Because she is a child.””

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You didn’t ask what she saw.””

The room went quiet.

Vincent continued.

“You immediately decided it wasn’t real.””

Evelyn’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Clara noticed too.

“So you do know something.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“I know people are panicking.””

“No,” Vincent said.

“You know more than you should.””

Evelyn took a slow breath.

Then smiled.

A small, controlled smile.

“I think everyone is forgetting something.””

Vincent stared.

“What?””

“I have been loyal to this family for over a decade.””

Nobody answered.

Evelyn continued.

“I was here when your company almost collapsed. I was here when Adrian disappeared. I was here when you rebuilt everything.””

She looked directly at Vincent.

“If I wanted to destroy you, I had plenty of chances.””

Vincent studied her.

“That’s exactly why you’re dangerous.””

The smile disappeared.

Before Evelyn could respond, a phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

It was Vincent’s phone.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

This time, Adrian spoke immediately.

“You found her.””

Vincent’s eyes stayed on Evelyn.

“You know about Evelyn.””

Silence.

Then Adrian said:

“Yes.””

Clara stepped closer.

“Adrian?””

Vincent put the phone on speaker.

Adrian’s voice filled the room.

“Evelyn was never just a house manager.””

Evelyn’s face remained unreadable.

Vincent asked:

“What was she?””

Adrian paused.

Then answered:

“She was the person who gave the order.””

Everyone froze.

Vincent looked at Evelyn.

“No.””

Adrian continued.

“She arranged the warehouse fire.””

Evelyn finally spoke.

“Lies.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Adrian ignored her.

“She knew where the files were. She knew our security systems. She knew exactly when nobody would be able to stop her.””

Vincent stared.

“Why?””

Another pause.

“Because she wanted control of the company.””

Evelyn laughed softly.

“You actually believe him?””

Vincent looked at her.

“I don’t know what I believe.””

That answer surprised everyone.

Including Evelyn.

Because Vincent Cole trusted facts.

Not feelings.

And right now, he had too many missing pieces.

Suddenly, one of the guards shouted from the hallway.

“Boss!””

Everyone turned.

The guard ran in holding a small object.

“We found this in Daniel’s room.””

Vincent took it.

A key.

Old.

Rusty.

But familiar.

His expression changed.

Because he knew that key.

It belonged to the old warehouse.

The one that burned twelve years ago.

The one where Adrian was supposed to have died.

On the key was a tiny engraving.

A date.

The date of the fire.

Clara looked at it.

“What is it?””

Vincent did not answer.

Because something impossible had just become clear.

Someone had returned to finish what they started.

And someone else had been waiting all these years for Vincent to find this key.

Then Lily quietly spoke.

“Mr. Cole?””

He looked down.

“What?””

She pointed at the key.

“He gave that to you before.””

Vincent froze.

“Who?””

Lily looked confused.

“The man with the scar.””

Everyone stared.

“When did he give it to you?”” Vincent asked.

Lily looked toward the dark window.

“Last night.””

Clara grabbed her hand.

“Lily, why didn’t you tell me?””

The little girl whispered:

“Because he said if I told anyone…”

She stopped.

Vincent lowered his voice.

“What did he say?””

Lily looked at him.

“He said the person who hurt my daddy was listening.””

The room went silent.

Then every phone in the mansion rang at the same time.

One after another.

A dozen devices.

The guards.

The servants.

Vincent’s phone.

All of them.

A message appeared on every screen.

One sentence.

One warning.

*LOOK BEHIND YOU.*

Everyone slowly turned.

At the end of the hallway stood a man.

Wearing a dark coat.

A hat covering his face.

And when he stepped into the light…

Vincent saw the scar.

The same scar Lily had drawn.

The same scar Daniel had feared.

The man removed his hat.

And after twelve years of believing him dead…

May you like

Adrian Vale smiled.

“Hello, Vincent.””
