Amused

Chapter 8: The Last Secret

The person standing in the ballroom was Margaret Collins.

Daniel felt his entire body tense.

Of all the people left.

It had to be her.

The woman who had hugged his mother.

The woman who had attended every birthday.

The woman who had smiled while helping destroy their family.

“You,” Daniel said.

Margaret didn’t run.

She didn’t deny it.

She simply looked tired.

“I knew this day would come.””

Daniel walked toward her.

“Why?””

Margaret looked at Evelyn.

Then at him.

“You really don’t know.””

“Then explain.””

She sat down.

“I was there the night Michael disappeared.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

Margaret nodded.

“I saw everything.””

The room went silent.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Her eyes filled with shame.

“Because I was afraid.””

Daniel laughed.

“Everyone was afraid.””

Margaret accepted that.

“Yes.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“Your father threatened all of us.””

Daniel frowned.

“My father?””

Margaret nodded.

“He wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.””

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a recording.

“I kept this for twenty years.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

“Because I was waiting for the right moment.””

She pressed play.

Robert’s voice filled the room.

“You don’t understand what you’re risking.””

Another voice.

Michael.

“You’re the one who should be worried.””

Robert:

“If you expose me, you lose everything.””

Michael:

“You already took everything.””

The recording ended.

Daniel stood frozen.

Margaret whispered:

“I helped your father at first.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Why?””

Margaret cried.

“Because I was in love with him.””

The confession shocked everyone.

Daniel stepped back.

“You were?””

She nodded.

“Before Robert married your mother.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Daniel felt sick.

“So all of this…”

Margaret looked down.

“Started because I couldn’t accept losing him.””

The truth was uglier than revenge.

It was jealousy.

Obsession.

A choice repeated over years.

“I told your mother to stay away.””

Margaret’s voice broke.

“I sent some of those messages.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“But Ethan?””

Margaret shook her head.

“Ethan found me.””

“What?””

“He wanted information about your family.””

Daniel realized.

Everyone had been using everyone.

Ethan used Margaret.

Margaret used Claire.

Claire used lies.

And Daniel was the person standing in the middle.

Then Ethan walked into the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

His face was pale.

“You shouldn’t have told him everything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re done controlling the story.””

Ethan stopped.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

Daniel laughed.

“You destroyed my wedding.””

“I wanted you to see the truth.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You wanted revenge.””

Ethan looked away.

And that was enough.

Daniel whispered:

“Your father.””

Ethan froze.

“What about him?””

Daniel studied his face.

“Your father wasn’t fired because he was innocent.””

The room changed.

Ethan’s expression collapsed.

“What?””

Michael stepped forward.

“I found the proof.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You’re lying.””

Michael shook his head.

“Your father was involved.””

Ethan backed away.

“No.””

Daniel understood.

Ethan had spent twenty years believing a lie too.

The same way Daniel had.

The same way his mother had suffered.

The same way everyone had.

Ethan whispered:

“I ruined everything.””

Nobody answered.

Because they all had.

Then Michael opened the folder.

“There’s one final piece.””

Daniel looked.

“What?””

Michael pointed to the document.

“The person who ordered the cover-up.””

Everyone waited.

Michael looked directly at Robert’s empty chair.

Then he said:

“It wasn’t Robert.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Michael’s voice dropped.

“Your father was protecting someone.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

And said a name.

May you like

A name that made Evelyn gasp.

A name nobody expected.
