Chapter 5: The Truth Everyone Buried
The ballroom went silent.
Ethan’s recorded voice echoed through the darkness.
“Daniel, you always believed people loved you because you were kind.””
A projector turned on.
Photos appeared.
Daniel and Ethan as children.
Daniel and Claire together.
His mother smiling.
Then documents.
Messages.
Screenshots.
Everyone watched.
“I wanted to show you something,” Ethan continued.
“You were never the victim of your mother’s love.””
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
Daniel recognized the logo.
His father’s company.
Robert stepped forward.
“What is that?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel stared.
The document was dated twenty years earlier.
The day Ethan’s father was fired.
Then another page appeared.
A confession.
His father’s face changed.
Daniel looked at him.
“Dad?””
Robert closed his eyes.
“I never wanted you to know.””
The room erupted.
“What is happening?””
Daniel felt betrayed.
Another secret.
Another person hiding something.
Robert walked forward.
“Ethan’s father didn’t steal money.””
Everyone froze.
“He was blamed.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Robert’s voice broke.
“I was the one who made the mistake.””
The room went silent.
“Your father was innocent,” Robert said.
Daniel looked toward the projector.
Ethan’s voice continued.
“You see, Daniel? Everyone lied.””
The screen showed another message.
A message between Robert and Margaret.
Daniel’s mother covered her mouth.
Robert looked terrified.
“No.””
Daniel turned.
“Dad?””
Robert whispered:
“Where did he get that?””
Margaret stepped back.
For the first time all night, she looked afraid.
Daniel looked around.
His wedding had become a battlefield of secrets.
His mother.
His father.
His bride.
His best friend.
Everyone had a piece of the truth.
But nobody had given him all of it.
The recording continued.
“Daniel, your mother didn’t keep me away from you.””
The room froze.
“Your father did.””
Daniel looked at Robert.
His father’s face went pale.
“What did you do?””
Robert couldn’t answer.
And then Evelyn spoke.
Quietly.
“Daniel…”
He turned.
She was crying.
“I never told you because I promised him I wouldn’t.””
Daniel felt his heart stop.
“Promised him what?””
His mother looked at Robert.
Then back at Daniel.
“That I would let you believe I left.””
The room disappeared.
“What?””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Your father made a deal with me twenty years ago.””
Daniel stared.
“What deal?””
She whispered:
“He said if I disappeared from your life, he would protect you from the truth.””
Daniel looked at Robert.
“What truth?””
His father said nothing.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
A man stood there.
Wet from the rain.
Breathing heavily.
Everyone turned.
Daniel knew him instantly.
Ethan.
But Ethan wasn’t smiling.
He looked terrified.
He looked like someone running from something.
He looked at Daniel and said:
“You need to know why your father wanted your mother gone.””
And behind him, someone else entered the ballroom.
May you like
Someone Daniel never expected to see.
Someone who should have been dead for twenty years.
