Chapter 7: The Promise That Destroyed a Family

Daniel followed his mother outside.

The rain had stopped.

But everything still felt cold.

For the first time in years, they stood alone.

No guests.

No lies.

No excuses.

Just mother and son.

Daniel stared at her.

“How long?””

Evelyn looked confused.

“How long what?””

“How long did you know my father wasn’t telling the truth?””

She looked away.

“Since the night you were born.””

The answer broke something inside him.

Daniel stepped back.

“What?””

She sat on the stone bench outside the venue.

“I need you to understand something.””

“I’m tired of understanding.””

His voice shook.

“I spent my entire life believing you left because you couldn’t handle being my mother.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I never left.””

“Then why?””

She looked at him.

“Because your father gave me a choice.””

Daniel laughed sadly.

“A choice?””

“He said if I stayed, he would make sure you lost everything.””

Daniel went quiet.

“He threatened you?””

“He threatened you.””

His mother’s voice cracked.

“He said he would tell you I was unstable. That I was dangerous. That I was trying to ruin your life.””

Daniel remembered.

The stories.

The whispers.

The way some relatives avoided mentioning his mother.

All because they believed she abandoned him.

“I should have fought.””

Evelyn looked down.

“I should have taken you and run.””

Daniel sat beside her.

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked at him.

“Because I was afraid.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was better than another lie.

Inside the venue, people were leaving.

The wedding was over.

The marriage that had not even started was already falling apart.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“What did Dad do that was so terrible?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she pulled out an old photograph.

Daniel looked at it.

It was him as a baby.

His mother.

His father.

Michael.

Everyone smiling.

“What happened?””

She pointed to Michael.

“Your uncle discovered your father was hiding something.””

“What?””

“He wasn’t only stealing from the company.””

Daniel waited.

“He was paying someone to cover up an accident.””

Daniel froze.

“Michael’s accident?””

Evelyn nodded.

“But that wasn’t the only one.””

A sound came from behind them.

Claire.

She stood there.

Her wedding dress was dirty now.

Her perfect image was gone.

“I know.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You know?””

Claire walked closer.

“I found out when Ethan showed me the files.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“So you knew all of this?””

“No.””

She shook her head quickly.

“I knew pieces.””

“That’s convenient.””

Claire looked like she wanted to cry.

“I thought Ethan wanted justice.””

“And what did you want?””

She looked at the ground.

“I wanted you.””

The honesty was painful.

Daniel looked away.

Claire whispered:

“I started helping him because I was afraid of losing you.””

“You destroyed my relationship with my mother.””

“I know.””

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

She wiped her tears.

“And I hate myself for it.””

For a moment, Daniel saw the woman he thought he knew.

The woman who laughed with him.

The woman who held him when his father had a heart attack.

But then he remembered the messages.

The pain his mother carried.

The years stolen.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

Then she handed him something.

A flash drive.

“What is this?””

“Ethan’s files.””

Daniel stared.

“Why give me this?””

“Because Ethan lied to me too.””

She looked terrified.

“He didn’t want justice.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What did he want?””

Claire swallowed.

“He wanted your family destroyed.””

A phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Daniel answered.

It was Ethan.

His voice was shaking.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“Where are you?””

“I made a mistake.””

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“What mistake?””

A pause.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Your father isn’t the only person who knows the truth.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan said:

“The person who started all of this is still inside that building.””

The call ended.

Daniel turned.

The ballroom doors were still open.

May you like

And someone was standing inside.

Watching them.
