Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Daniel couldn’t move.

The ballroom lights had returned, but nothing felt real anymore.

Not the flowers.

Not the guests.

Not the woman standing beside him in a wedding dress.

Not even the man standing at the entrance.

Because Daniel knew that face.

He had seen it in old photographs.

In faded memories.

In the picture his mother kept hidden at the bottom of a drawer.

A man with dark hair, tired eyes, and a smile Daniel had almost forgotten.

His uncle.

Michael Hayes.

His father’s younger brother.

The man everyone told him had died twenty years ago.

Daniel looked at Robert.

His father’s face had lost all color.

“No,” Robert whispered.

Michael stepped into the ballroom.

“I thought you would say that.””

Nobody spoke.

The guests watched like they were witnessing something impossible.

Daniel finally found his voice.

“You’re dead.””

Michael looked at him.

“I was supposed to be.””

The words sent a chill through Daniel.

His mother covered her mouth.

“Michael…”

He looked at Evelyn.

And something passed between them.

Something Daniel didn’t understand.

“You knew?”” Daniel asked.

Evelyn looked down.

“I knew he survived.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“You knew my uncle was alive and never told me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice cracked.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me while they destroy my life.””

Nobody answered.

Michael walked closer.

“Daniel, I know you’re angry.””

“You think?””

Michael accepted the anger.

“I deserve it.””

Daniel stared.

“Why did everyone think you died?””

Michael looked toward Robert.

“Because your father needed me gone.””

The room became silent.

Robert stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.””

Michael laughed quietly.

“After twenty years, you still think you can control the story?””

Daniel looked between them.

“What happened?””

Michael pulled a small folder from his jacket.

“I came here because Ethan was right about one thing.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“You deserve the truth.””

He placed the folder on the table.

Inside were newspaper clippings.

Old documents.

Photographs.

Daniel picked up the first newspaper.

His eyes widened.

HAYES BROTHERS BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP COLLAPSES AFTER FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

The date was twenty years earlier.

The same year Michael disappeared.

Daniel looked at his father.

“Dad?””

Robert looked away.

Michael spoke.

“Your father and I built the company together.””

“I know.””

“No, you know the version he told you.””

Daniel opened another document.

A financial report.

Michael pointed.

“Your father was losing money.””

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“He was desperate.””

Michael looked at him.

“And instead of admitting it, he blamed me.””

Daniel’s heart raced.

“You’re saying Dad framed you?””

“I’m saying your father let everyone believe I stole from him.””

Robert finally exploded.

“Because you were going to destroy everything!””

Michael turned.

“I was going to expose you.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at his father.

“Expose him for what?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Michael did.

“For the accident.””

Daniel froze.

“What accident?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Like she had been waiting twenty years for this moment.

Michael looked at Daniel.

“The night I disappeared wasn’t because of business.””

He took a breath.

“It was because I found out what your father had done.””

Daniel felt sick.

“What did he do?””

Michael looked at Robert.

“Tell him.””

Robert stayed silent.

Michael continued.

“Twenty years ago, I found proof that Robert had been moving money from the company.””

“That’s not true,” Robert said.

Michael ignored him.

“I confronted him.””

Daniel listened carefully.

“And?””

Michael’s expression changed.

“He followed me.””

A cold silence.

“There was a storm that night.””

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Your father’s car hit mine.””

Daniel stepped back.

“What?””

“I survived.””

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“But your father told everyone I died.””

Daniel stared at Robert.

“No.””

His father looked broken.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You let me believe my uncle was dead?””

Robert’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought he was.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“That’s the lie you told yourself.””

The ballroom doors suddenly opened.

Police officers walked in.

Everyone gasped.

Daniel looked confused.

“What is happening?””

One officer stepped forward.

“Robert Hayes?””

Robert froze.

“Yes?””

“We need to ask you some questions regarding evidence connected to a twenty-year-old fraud investigation.””

The room exploded with whispers.

Daniel watched his father being surrounded.

The man he had trusted his entire life.

The man who stood beside him at every graduation.

Every birthday.

Every achievement.

Now looked like a stranger.

But before Robert was taken away, he looked at Daniel.

And whispered:

“Your mother knows the worst part.””

Daniel turned toward Evelyn.

His mother was crying.

“What does he mean?””

May you like

She didn’t answer.

Because her silence was more frightening than any confession.
