Amused

Chapter 2: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The ballroom was no longer a wedding venue.

It felt like a courtroom.

Everyone had stopped eating.

Stopped talking.

Stopped pretending.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“She wasn’t supposed to come?””

Claire’s lips parted.

“I didn’t mean—”

“What did you mean?””

Her eyes moved around the room.

Looking for support.

Nobody moved.

Not even her parents.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire, tell me why my mother’s best friend is calling you during our wedding.””

Claire lowered her voice.

“Daniel, please. We need to talk privately.””

He almost laughed.

Privately.

That word suddenly sounded like a weapon.

“For weeks,” Daniel said, “you told me my mother didn’t want to come.””

Claire looked away.

“She was struggling.””

“You told me she said she needed space.””

“She did.””

“No, she didn’t.””

Daniel held up the pages.

“She said she was afraid I hated her.””

Claire became quiet.

His silence was the answer.

Robert walked toward them.

“Evelyn never missed a single birthday.””

Claire looked at him.

“Mr. Hayes—”

“She drove six hours when Daniel got sick in college.””

Robert’s voice hardened.

“She slept in her car because she couldn’t afford a hotel.””

Daniel remembered.

He remembered waking up in the hospital and seeing his mother beside him.

He remembered her saying she was fine.

Even though her eyes were exhausted.

Claire crossed her arms.

“I was trying to protect Daniel.””

The words shocked him.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“From my own mother?””

Claire took a breath.

“You don’t know everything about your relationship with her.””

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

Claire hesitated.

Then Margaret Collins entered the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

She looked exactly like she always did.

Elegant.

Calm.

Perfect.

The same woman who had helped Daniel’s mother pick out flowers.

The same woman who had hugged Evelyn when Daniel proposed.

Margaret smiled nervously.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“Why are you calling Claire?””

Margaret froze.

Just slightly.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

Robert stepped forward.

“We saw the phone.””

Margaret’s expression changed.

Then she looked at Claire.

And Daniel saw it.

A silent conversation.

A warning.

“You two knew,” Daniel whispered.

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Margaret spoke quickly.

“Daniel, your mother has always been emotional. Sometimes people misunderstand things.””

Evelyn finally raised her head.

“Margaret.””

Her voice was broken.

“How could you?””

The room went silent.

Margaret looked at her.

“You were going to ruin everything.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“Ruin what?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Your future.””

“My future?””

“She held you back your entire life.””

Daniel stared.

Nobody had ever spoken about his mother that way.

Not even during their worst arguments.

Robert’s voice became cold.

“You lied to my wife.””

Margaret looked away.

“I did what I had to do.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What exactly did you do?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

Claire did.

“We made sure she stayed away.””

The words came out quietly.

But they destroyed the room.

Daniel looked at his bride.

“What?””

Claire immediately shook her head.

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“You said you made sure.””

She looked desperate now.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, I have listened to everyone except the one person who deserved to be heard.””

He turned toward his mother.

Evelyn was crying silently.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“I tried to tell you.””

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because every time I called, you were angry.””

Daniel frowned.

“I was never angry at you.””

She pulled a folded paper from her coat.

“Yes, you were.””

Daniel opened it.

A handwritten letter.

His handwriting.

Except he had never written it.

His face went pale.

The letter began:

Mom,

I need you to stop contacting me.

I need space from you.

Please don’t come to my wedding.

Daniel dropped the paper.

“I didn’t write this.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

Until Margaret whispered:

“Someone who knew you better than anyone.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

Then at Margaret.

And then his eyes landed on the empty seat beside Claire’s family.

A seat reserved for one person.

His childhood best friend.

The man who had introduced Daniel and Claire.

The man who had helped plan the wedding.

The man who had disappeared two hours before the ceremony.

“Where is Ethan?”” Daniel asked.

Nobody spoke.

May you like

And that was when Daniel realized the worst part.

Everyone in the room knew something he didn’t.
