Chapter 4: The Person Behind the Lies

Claire refused to hand over her phone.

That alone told Daniel everything.

A person with nothing to hide doesn’t protect an empty screen like a secret.

They moved into a private room beside the ballroom.

The wedding decorations were visible through the glass.

White flowers.

Candles.

A perfect picture.

A lie built with expensive details.

Daniel placed the printed messages on the table.

“How long?””

Claire looked exhausted.

“Daniel.””

“How long did you know?””

She sat down.

“Three months.””

His heart sank.

Three months.

The entire time he had been planning a wedding.

The entire time his mother had been begging for answers.

“You let me believe she abandoned me.””

Claire wiped her eyes.

“I thought I was protecting our marriage.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Claire looked at him.

“You have no idea what your mother was like when we first met.””

“Then tell me.””

“She made me feel like I could never replace her.””

Daniel stared.

“She’s my mother.””

“Exactly.””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“I knew I would always come second.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So you destroyed my relationship with her?””

“I was scared.””

“Scared people don’t fake messages.””

Silence.

The door opened.

Margaret entered.

Daniel looked at her.

“You need to leave.””

Margaret ignored him.

“Claire, we need to go.””

Daniel noticed something.

Margaret wasn’t looking at Claire.

She was looking at him.

Like she knew something.

“What do you mean, go?””

Margaret sighed.

“The truth is coming out.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What truth?””

Margaret hesitated.

Then she said:

“Ethan wasn’t the only person helping us.””

Daniel felt cold.

“Helping you do what?””

Margaret looked at Claire.

“You should tell him.””

Claire closed her eyes.

And Daniel knew.

There was something worse.

Something bigger.

“I met Ethan before I met you,” Claire whispered.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“He helped me get close to you.””

The room spun.

“Why?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Margaret did.

“Because Ethan believed you owed him.””

Daniel frowned.

“Owed him what?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Your father’s company.””

Daniel froze.

Years earlier, his father had built a small construction business.

Ethan’s father had worked there.

Then he had been fired after stealing money.

Ethan blamed Daniel’s family.

“You’re insane,” Daniel whispered.

Margaret shook her head.

“He wanted revenge.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“And you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“At first?””

She looked away.

“I fell in love with you.””

Daniel almost believed her.

Almost.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from Ethan.

One photo.

Daniel opened it.

His wedding invitation.

With notes written all over it.

Plans.

Dates.

Names.

And one sentence at the bottom:

The mother is the last obstacle.

Daniel looked up.

“What is this?””

Claire started crying.

“I was supposed to leave tonight.””

Daniel stared.

“But you stayed.””

She whispered:

“Because I realized I couldn’t let him destroy you.””

Before Daniel could answer, the ballroom lights suddenly went out.

A scream came from outside.

Then the sound system turned on.

A recording began playing.

May you like

Ethan’s voice filled the darkness.

“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, it means you finally know the truth.””
