Chapter 9: The Night Elena Died

Nobody moved.

Marcus stood beside Nia, holding her against his chest.

Vanessa stared at the photograph on the principal's desk.

Thomas remained motionless.

The principal looked between them, clearly uncomfortable.

“What does she mean?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa's lips parted.

“I didn't know it would happen that night.””

Marcus felt his daughter tighten her arms around his neck.

He immediately turned toward the principal.

“Could you please take Nia somewhere quiet?””

The principal nodded.

“Of course.””

Nia looked at her father.

“Daddy, are you coming?””

“Right behind you, sweetheart.””

She reluctantly followed the principal into the adjoining office.

When the door closed, Marcus turned back to Vanessa.

“Explain what you just said.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't mean it like that.””

“Then what did you mean?””

Thomas placed the photograph into a protective folder.

“We need to preserve the original security footage and let the authorities investigate.””

Vanessa pointed at him.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

Thomas looked at her.

“I know you were outside Elena's hospital room the night she died.””

“I worked there.””

“You weren't assigned to her care.””

“I was delivering supplies.””

“With a medicine bottle?””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You can't prove what was inside it.””

The words hung in the room.

Marcus stared at her.

“What was inside it?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Then she looked away.

“I didn't hurt Elena.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then why did you say you didn't know it would happen that night?””

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

“Because Daniel told me she was getting worse. He said the doctors were already adjusting her medication. I thought—”

She stopped.

Marcus felt his heart hammering.

“You thought what?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I thought she would be gone soon anyway.””

Thomas closed his eyes briefly.

Marcus took another step.

“Did you change her medication?””

“No.””

“Did you give her something?””

“No!””

“Then what was in that bottle?””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“Something Daniel told me to deliver.””

Marcus went completely still.

Thomas looked at her.

“What was it?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I don't know. He said it was part of a treatment adjustment. He said the doctor had approved it.””

“Did you administer it?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I left it with the nurse.””

Marcus felt the floor disappear beneath him.

He remembered the final night.

The hospital room had smelled of antiseptic and lavender lotion.

Elena had been exhausted.

He had kissed her forehead before leaving to pick up Nia's overnight bag from home.

He had promised to return within an hour.

When he came back, Elena was surrounded by medical staff.

A nurse had told him her condition had suddenly deteriorated.

He had never questioned it.

Now he looked at Vanessa.

“You were there.””

She covered her face.

“I didn't know.””

“You were there while my wife was dying.””

“I didn't know what was going to happen!””

Marcus's voice broke.

“Did you see her?””

Vanessa nodded faintly.

“Did she recognize you?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Did Elena know it was you?””

Vanessa whispered:

“She called my name.””

Marcus felt his stomach twist.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa started shaking.

“She asked me why I was there.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What did you tell her?””

“I said I was helping.””

“And?””

Vanessa's tears fell faster.

“She told me to leave.””

Thomas looked at her with disbelief.

“You were the last person she asked to leave her room?””

Vanessa nodded.

Marcus stepped backward.

For years, he had remembered Elena's final night as a blur of fear, doctors, and unanswered questions.

Now he understood why she had written that letter.

Why she had asked Margaret to preserve the trust documents.

Why she had tried so desperately to warn him.

But he still didn't know exactly what Vanessa had done.

And he wasn't going to let an emotional confession replace a proper investigation.

He called Richard.

“Richard, I need you to contact the authorities. We have a photograph showing Vanessa outside Elena's hospital room on the night she died. She just admitted that Daniel instructed her to deliver an unidentified substance.””

Richard went silent.

“Marcus, don't confront her any further. Are you with her now?””

“Yes.””

“Stay somewhere public and make sure the original photograph and recording are preserved.””

Marcus looked at Thomas.

“We have the security footage too.””

“Good. I'm contacting the appropriate investigators.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“You're going to destroy my life over something I didn't understand?””

Marcus lowered the phone.

“You helped Daniel access my wife's medical records. You delivered something to her hospital room. You used my daughter's inheritance.

You fabricated allegations against me. And now you're asking me to worry about your life?””

“I was trying to survive!””

Marcus shook his head.

“So was Elena.””

The words silenced her.

Thomas gathered the documents.

“We should leave.””

Marcus nodded.

He went into the adjoining office and found Nia sitting beside the principal.

She looked up immediately.

“Are we going home?””

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“Is Vanessa coming?””

Marcus crouched.

“No.””

Nia looked relieved.

“Can I stay with Grandma Margaret?””

Marcus hesitated.

He remembered Thomas's warning.

He didn't want to frighten his daughter, but he also wasn't ready to make assumptions.

“We'll decide together where everyone feels safe.””

Nia nodded.

Then she leaned closer.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Did I do something bad?””

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

“No, baby. None of this is your fault.””

He kissed her forehead.

“Not one little bit.””

That afternoon, Richard arranged a meeting with a detective and a hospital compliance officer.

Patricia Wells joined by video call.

She confirmed that she had questioned the medication adjustment and had submitted an internal complaint.

She also provided the original handwritten note she had made that night.

The note contained three important details.

First, Vanessa had entered the medication room without being assigned to the patient.

Second, an unidentified bottle had been delivered to the nursing station.

Third, a nurse had refused to administer the contents because the accompanying order could not be verified.

The medication had eventually been removed from the station.

But the records showed that another dose had been administered later.

Nobody could yet establish whether the two events were connected.

The detective made that distinction clear.

“We are investigating possible misconduct and unauthorized access. We are not making a conclusion about the cause of Mrs. Bennett's death at this stage.””

Marcus nodded.

“I understand.””

Patricia leaned toward her camera.

“Mr. Bennett, there's something I haven't told you.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What is it?”” Richard asked.

Patricia swallowed.

“On the night Elena died, she asked me to contact her husband. She said she had something important to tell him.””

Marcus went still.

“Did you call me?””

“I tried. But the communication system showed that your number had been removed from her approved contact list.””

Marcus frowned.

“Removed by whom?””

Patricia glanced at her notes.

“The request was submitted through an administrative account.””

“Whose account?””

She looked directly at him.

“Vanessa Reed's.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He remembered standing outside the hospital room, wondering why nobody had called him sooner.

He had been there when Elena's condition worsened.

But he hadn't been there when she had asked for him.

And someone had made sure of that.

Patricia continued.

“She also left a message for you. I wrote it down because I was worried it might be important.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What did she say?””

Patricia unfolded a piece of paper.

“She said, 'Tell Marcus I found out who Daniel is working for. Tell him the money isn't the only thing they want.''”

The detective looked up.

“Did she identify anyone else?””

Patricia shook her head.

“No. She was too weak.””

Marcus stared at the paper.

The money wasn't the only thing they wanted.

He thought about Vanessa's secret house.

The forged loan guarantee.

The guardianship petition.

Then he remembered the message Thomas had sent him.

Before you trust Margaret.

He looked toward Thomas.

“What did Elena discover about Daniel?””

Thomas opened his briefcase.

“That's the part I haven't shown you yet.””

He removed a thick folder.

Inside were copies of corporate registrations, property records, and financial transactions.

He placed a page in front of Marcus.

The document listed a company called Northbridge Holdings.

Its directors included Daniel Reed and a woman named Margaret Collins.

Marcus looked up.

“What is this?””

Margaret's name was printed beside Daniel's.

Thomas spoke quietly.

“Northbridge Holdings was created eight years ago. It received money from the adoption agency's charitable accounts. Later, it became involved in several property transactions.””

Marcus stared at the document.

“Margaret?””

Thomas nodded.

“Elena discovered the company shortly before her death. She believed Daniel was using it to move money from several trusts.””

Marcus looked at the financial records.

“Why would Margaret be involved?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I don't know. But her name appears on the original registration.””

Marcus felt a familiar coldness settle over him.

He looked at Margaret.

She was sitting across the table, staring at the document.

Her hands were trembling.

“Margaret,” he said.

She didn't respond.

“Did you own shares in Northbridge Holdings?””

Margaret finally lifted her eyes.

“Yes.””

Marcus leaned back.

“Why?””

Margaret's voice was barely audible.

“Because Daniel told me it was an investment company.””

“Did you know money from children's trusts was going into it?””

“No.””

Thomas placed another document on the table.

“Then perhaps you can explain this.””

It was a transfer authorization.

Margaret's signature appeared at the bottom.

The transaction had moved two hundred thousand dollars from Northbridge Holdings into an account connected to Vantage Lifestyle Consulting.

Marcus looked at his mother-in-law.

“Did you authorize this?””

Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

Thomas pointed to the signature.

“Then someone forged it.””

Margaret began crying.

Marcus stared at the paper.

The situation was becoming more complicated by the minute.

He had believed Margaret was the one person who had stood beside Elena and protected Nia's future.

Now her name was appearing in financial documents connected to Daniel.

Richard gathered the papers.

“We need to verify every signature and trace every transfer. No assumptions.””

Marcus nodded.

Then Margaret finally spoke.

“I know why my name is there.””

Everyone turned.

She wiped her face.

“Because I gave Daniel access to the company years ago. But I didn't know he was stealing.””

Marcus stared at her.

“How long have you known him?””

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“Since before Elena was born.””

Thomas's expression changed.

“What?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Daniel wasn't just an accountant. He was my former husband.””

Silence filled the room.

Marcus slowly stood.

“Your former husband?””

Margaret nodded.

“He is your wife's biological father.””

Thomas looked as though someone had struck him.

“No.””

Margaret's voice trembled.

“Yes.””

Thomas shook his head.

“That's impossible. My adoption records name someone else.””

“Daniel paid to keep his name out of the records.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Because Daniel never wanted Elena to know he was her father.””

Thomas gripped the edge of the table.

“Then why did he help Vanessa?””

Margaret's eyes filled.

“Because he wanted access to Elena's inheritance.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“Why would he care about Nia's inheritance?””

Margaret took a trembling breath.

“Because Elena wasn't his only child.””

Thomas stared at her.

Margaret looked directly at Marcus.

“Daniel has another son. And that son is the person Vanessa has been protecting all along.””

Marcus's phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Nia standing outside her school that morning.

Beneath it were eight words:

Stop investigating, or your daughter will disappear.

Marcus looked at Thomas.

Then at Margaret.

And suddenly, the financial crimes, the hospital records, and the custody battle seemed like only the beginning.

May you like

The person behind everything was still free.

And he knew exactly where Nia went to school.
