Chapter 5: The Secret in the Photographs

Margaret arrived forty minutes later.
She entered the house carrying a large leather handbag and wearing the same silver necklace she had worn to Elena's funeral.
When Marcus opened the door, she immediately noticed his expression.
“Where is Nia?””
“Upstairs with Caleb and Ava.””
“Is she safe?””
“Yes.””
Margaret closed her eyes briefly.
“Thank God.””
Then she saw Vanessa.
The two women stared at each other.
Margaret's expression hardened.
“You.””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“Good afternoon, Margaret.””
“Don't pretend this is a social visit.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Please. Not in front of the children.””
Margaret nodded, but her eyes never left Vanessa.
“I brought the original trust documents. I also brought something Elena asked me to keep.””
She opened her handbag and removed a thick cream envelope.
The envelope was sealed with red wax.
Marcus recognized Elena's handwriting.
His name was written across the front.
“What's this?””
Margaret sat down.
“Elena gave it to me three weeks before she died. She told me not to open it unless you came to me with concerns about Nia's inheritance.””
Marcus stared at the envelope.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Elena made me promise. She believed that if I told you too early, you would dismiss her concerns as fear brought on by her illness.””
Marcus lowered his head.
“She was right.””
Margaret touched his shoulder.
“She loved you, Marcus. She didn't want you to spend your life looking over your shoulder.””
Vanessa laughed from the doorway.
“Are we having a family ceremony now?””
Margaret turned.
“No. We're dealing with the consequences of your actions.””
Vanessa stepped into the room.
“You've never liked me.””
“I didn't know you well enough to dislike you when I first met you. But I knew something was wrong when you asked me to transfer money into an account that didn't belong to Nia.””
Marcus looked at Margaret.
“You told me you sent the money to the account number Vanessa gave you.””
“I did. But she also asked me to change the beneficiary information.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's a lie.””
Margaret reached into her handbag and produced a printed email.
“I kept everything.””
She placed it on the coffee table.
The email was dated eleven months earlier.
It had been sent from Vanessa's personal address.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: TRUST BENEFICIARY UPDATE.*
Marcus read the message.
Vanessa had asked Margaret to replace Nia's education trust with a new family investment account.
She claimed the change would allow the family to make better financial decisions.
At the bottom was a sentence that made Marcus's stomach tighten.
Marcus has already agreed, but he doesn't want to burden you with paperwork.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You used my name again.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You were too busy to handle it.””
“I never agreed.””
“You were always working!””
“That's not permission to forge my signature.””
Margaret leaned forward.
“There's something else in that email.””
She pointed to the final attachment.
It was a photograph of a handwritten note.
Marcus recognized Elena's handwriting.
His eyes widened.
It was a note she had written to Margaret.
If Vanessa ever asks to change the trust, do not sign anything. Nia's inheritance must remain separate from the household.
Margaret's voice softened.
“Elena knew.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Of course. Another message from the saint herself.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“Enough.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely startled by his tone.
He opened the cream envelope.
Inside was a smaller envelope, several printed photographs, and a handwritten page.
He unfolded the letter.
Marcus,
There is something I haven't told you because I didn't want to burden you while I was fighting to stay alive.
Daniel was not simply asking questions about Nia's inheritance. He was asking questions about our marriage.
Marcus looked up.
Margaret's face was pale.
He continued.
He told me Vanessa believed you would eventually marry someone wealthy. She was particularly interested in your business assets and the inheritance Nia would receive from my family.
I initially thought he was exaggerating. Then I discovered that Vanessa had approached a property agent and asked how to purchase a home through a company without her future spouse knowing.
Marcus stopped reading.
The room felt suddenly smaller.
He turned to the photographs.
The first showed Vanessa standing outside a restaurant with Daniel.
The second showed them entering a bank.
The third was taken outside the same white house Marcus had seen in Richard's report.
But the final photograph was different.
It showed Vanessa standing beside a man Marcus didn't recognize.
The man was holding a folder.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.
Four months before Elena died.
Marcus turned it over.
There was another sentence.
The man in this photograph is Peter Lawson. He helped Daniel arrange the original trust transfer.
Marcus looked at Margaret.
“Who is Peter Lawson?””
Margaret shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the photographs.
“Those pictures prove nothing.””
Marcus held them out of reach.
“Then why are you afraid of them?””
“Because they're private!””
“Private meetings with a man arranging transfers from my daughter's inheritance?””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“You don't understand what happened!””
“Then tell me.””
She stared at the photographs.
For a moment, her face seemed to collapse.
Then she spoke.
“Daniel was in trouble.””
Marcus frowned.
“What kind of trouble?””
“He had debts. His business was failing. He needed money.””
“So you used my daughter's trust?””
“I was going to replace it!””
“With what?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Margaret stood.
“You stole from a child.””
“I did what I had to do!””
The room went silent.
Marcus stared at her.
“That's the first honest thing you've said.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I never wanted Nia to suffer.””
“Then why did you pack her suitcase?””
“Because I couldn't take it anymore!””
Marcus pointed toward the staircase.
“She was crying because she believed her father had stopped loving her.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I didn't mean for it to go that far.””
“You recorded her.””
“I needed evidence!””
“Evidence of what?””
“That you were unstable!””
Marcus shook his head.
“You were manufacturing evidence against me.””
Vanessa's shoulders dropped.
For a few seconds, she looked like a woman who had run out of explanations.
Then she looked at Margaret.
“You don't know what Elena was like.””
Margaret's face became cold.
“I knew my daughter better than anyone.””
“She controlled everything.””
“She was dying.””
“She still controlled everything! Even after her death, she made sure I couldn't have anything!””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“You had a home, a family, two children who loved you, and a husband who trusted you.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Trust? You spent every holiday talking about Elena. Every birthday, every anniversary, every important moment. There was always a photograph of her somewhere.””
Marcus's voice softened.
“She was my first wife. Nia's mother. Remembering her doesn't mean I didn't love you.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I wanted to be the only woman in this house.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You were never asked to replace her.””
A quiet knock interrupted them.
Caleb stood in the doorway.
He was holding his tablet.
“Dad?””
Marcus turned.
“What is it, son?””
Caleb walked closer.
“I found something else.””
Vanessa immediately stiffened.
“Caleb, put that away.””
He looked at his mother.
“You told me to delete the messages, but I didn't.””
Marcus took the tablet.
“What messages?””
Caleb opened a conversation between Vanessa and Daniel.
The messages stretched back several months.
Most were about money, property, and the company.
But one message caught Marcus's attention.
It was dated three weeks before the false child abuse report.
Vanessa had written:
The only problem is the girl. If Marcus keeps her, he'll never agree to transfer the remaining assets. We need a reason for him to lose custody.
Daniel had replied:
Are you sure you want to go that far?
Vanessa's answer was immediate.
He won't fight forever. Once the authorities get involved, he'll have to spend money defending himself. Then we'll move.
Marcus felt his hand go numb.
He scrolled further.
Another message appeared.
Daniel had sent a photograph of a document.
The caption read:
The guardianship application is ready.
Marcus looked up.
“Guardianship?””
Caleb nodded.
“Mom said she was going to make me and Ava live with her at the new house, but she said Nia would go somewhere else.””
Vanessa rushed forward.
“Give me that tablet!””
Marcus stepped away.
“No.””
She reached for it again.
Susan Miller appeared from the study.
“Mrs. Bennett, I need you to step back.””
Vanessa froze.
Susan had been reviewing the children's statements and now held a separate document in her hand.
“Mr. Bennett, I believe you should see this.””
She placed it on the table.
It was a copy of a proposed guardianship petition.
The petition requested that Vanessa become the primary guardian of all three children in the event Marcus was declared unfit.
But there was something strange.
The document had been prepared by a law firm that Marcus recognized.
It was the same firm that handled the purchase of Vanessa's secret house.
He looked at the date.
The petition had been prepared two months before Vanessa filed the abuse report.
Marcus slowly lifted his eyes.
“She planned this before yesterday.””
Susan nodded.
“It appears so.””
Vanessa's voice became desperate.
“It's not what it looks like!””
Marcus looked at the document again.
Then he noticed the name of the person who had requested the petition.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It was Daniel Reed.

And beside his name was a handwritten instruction:
*Do not inform Marcus until the court filing is complete.*
