Chapter 6: The Children Heard Everything

By noon, the house had become a place where nobody knew what to say.
Susan had arranged for the children to remain with Marcus while the allegations were assessed. She had also documented the suspicious financial records and the proposed guardianship petition.
Vanessa was still in the house, but the woman who had confidently dragged Nia's suitcase toward the front door the previous afternoon had disappeared.
She sat at the dining table, staring at a glass of water she hadn't touched.
Marcus stood near the window, speaking quietly with Richard on the phone.
“Richard, I want an emergency meeting today.””
“I'm arranging it.””
“And I want the original trust protected immediately.””
“I'm already contacting the trustee.””
Marcus glanced toward Vanessa.
“There's another issue. I found a guardianship petition prepared by Daniel.””
Richard went silent.
“Marcus, listen carefully. Don't sign anything. Don't agree to any private settlement. And don't allow anyone to remove the children from the house without proper arrangements.””
“Understood.””
“I'm also going to request an independent forensic review of the financial documents.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Do it.””
When he ended the call, he noticed Caleb standing in the hallway.
“Hey, buddy.””
Caleb looked nervous.
“Can I talk to you?””
“Of course.””
Marcus led him into the study and closed the door.
Caleb sat on the edge of the chair.
“Are you going to send Mom away?””
Marcus took a seat opposite him.
“I don't know what will happen between your mother and me. But I do know you and Ava are not responsible for any of this.””
Caleb stared at his hands.
“Mom said if I told you about the messages, you wouldn't want us anymore.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
He leaned forward.
“Caleb, look at me.””
The boy raised his eyes.
“You and Ava are my family. That doesn't change because of something your mother has done.””
Caleb's lips trembled.
“But I'm not your real son.””
Marcus shook his head.
“What does real mean to you?””
Caleb shrugged.
“Someone who's related by blood.””
Marcus considered the question.
Then he smiled sadly.
“When you were six, you fell off your bicycle and broke your front tooth. I drove you to the dentist, and you cried so loudly that the receptionist gave you three stickers. Do you remember?””
Caleb gave a small smile.
“Four stickers.””
“That's right. Four. And when you had your first school performance, you forgot your lines. I sat in the front row and whispered them to you.””
Caleb nodded.
“You did.””
“And when you got sick last winter, I stayed up all night checking your temperature. Did I do those things because we shared DNA?””
Caleb shook his head.
“No.””
“I did them because I love you. You're my son in every way that matters.””
Caleb's eyes filled.
“Even now?””
“Especially now.””
The boy finally broke down.
Marcus stood and hugged him.
Outside the study, Ava was listening.
When Caleb opened the door, she ran into Marcus's arms too.
For several minutes, the three of them stood together.
Then Ava whispered:
“Can Nia come too?””
Marcus smiled.
“She can come whenever she wants.””
They found Nia sitting on her bedroom floor, arranging the teddy bear's clothes beside her dolls.
She looked up when the door opened.
“Are you mad?””
Marcus sat beside her.
“No, sweetheart.””
“Is Vanessa going to make me leave?””
He looked at Caleb and Ava.
“No one is packing your suitcase again.””
Nia lowered her head.
“I don't want everyone fighting because of me.””
Ava immediately sat beside her.
“It's not because of you.””
Caleb nodded.
“Mom made choices. You didn't.””
Nia looked at them uncertainly.
“Are we still friends?””
Ava hugged her.
“We're family.””
Nia started crying again, but this time she wasn't alone.
Marcus watched the three children hold each other.
For a moment, he felt that something good might still survive the damage Vanessa had caused.
Then his phone rang.
It was Richard.
“Marcus, I've got an update.””
“What is it?””
“We contacted the bank holding the original trust account. The account was opened under Elena's estate instructions, and the trustee has confirmed that several withdrawals were unauthorized.””
“How much remains?””
“Very little.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“How much?””
“Approximately twenty-three thousand dollars.””
He gripped the phone.
“Out of how much?””
“The original principal and accumulated contributions were worth approximately six hundred and forty thousand dollars.””
Marcus felt the room tilt.
Six hundred and forty thousand.
Almost all of it was gone.
“Can it be recovered?””
“Some of it may be traceable. But there's a more urgent issue.””
“What?””
“The property purchased through Vantage Lifestyle Consulting was recently transferred.””
Marcus stared at the wall.
“Transferred to whom?””
Richard paused.
“To a private trust registered in another state.””
“Whose trust?””
“We're investigating that now. But the transfer was made five days ago.””
Five days.
Before Vanessa had packed Nia's suitcase.
Before the false video.
Before the investigator arrived.
Marcus looked toward the children.
“Richard, find out who owns that trust.””
“I will.””
“And Richard?””
“Yes?””
“Don't let them move another dollar.””
He ended the call.
When he returned downstairs, Vanessa was standing beside the dining table with her handbag.
She had changed into a dark coat.
Marcus stopped.
“Where are you going?””
“To my mother's.””
“Not until we discuss the financial records.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You don't get to control where I go.””
“I haven't said you can't leave. I'm saying you need to understand that the investigation isn't over.””
She picked up her keys.
“I've had enough.””
Marcus stepped aside.
“Then leave.””
Vanessa blinked.
She had expected an argument.
Instead, Marcus walked toward the front door and opened it.
“Go.””
She stared at him.
“You're really throwing me out?””
Marcus looked at the suitcase still sitting near the wall.
“I didn't pack your belongings. You packed an eight-year-old girl's belongings. There's a difference.””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“You'll regret this.””
“Maybe. But not because I protected my daughter.””
She walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“One day you'll realize what Elena did to you.””
Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa turned.
“She made you believe everyone was after her money. She made you believe you had to protect Nia from the entire world.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“Get out, Vanessa.””
She stepped onto the porch.
But before he could close the door, she turned back.
“There's something you should know.””
Marcus waited.
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“Elena wasn't as innocent as you think.””
He stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Ask Margaret about the man who visited Elena in the hospital.””
Marcus's heart skipped.
“What man?””
“Ask her why Elena was so desperate to change the trust before she died.””
Then Vanessa walked away.
Marcus watched her car disappear down the street.
He closed the door and turned around.
Margaret was standing in the hallway.
Her face was pale.
“You heard that?”” he asked.
She nodded.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who visited Elena in the hospital?””
Margaret looked toward the staircase, making sure the children were out of earshot.
Then she whispered:
“His name was Thomas.””
“Who was he?””
Margaret's eyes filled.
“He was the man Elena had been trying to find for twenty-seven years.””
Marcus frowned.
“I don't understand.””
Margaret took a trembling breath.
“Marcus, there's something about Elena's past you were never told.””
She sat down slowly.
“When Elena was twenty-one, she gave birth to a little boy.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What?””
“She was very young. Her father forced her to give him up for adoption. She never stopped looking for him.””
Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.
“Elena had a son?””
Margaret nodded.
“And five days before she died, that young man came to see her.””
Marcus gripped the back of a chair.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Margaret looked directly into his eyes.
“Because Thomas wasn't just visiting her. He had discovered something about Daniel Reed.””
Marcus went still.
“What did he discover?””
Margaret reached into her handbag and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed Elena standing beside a young man in a hospital corridor.
On the back, Elena had written:
My son. The person who may finally help me protect Nia.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
Then he noticed the date.
It was taken only five days before Elena died.
His phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent him a message.
*Mr. Bennett, my name is Thomas. I was your wife's son.
I've been trying to reach you for three years. I have the original documents proving what Daniel and Vanessa did to Elena.*
A second message arrived.
But there's something you need to know before you trust Margaret.
Marcus looked up.
May you like
His mother-in-law was watching him.
And suddenly, he wasn't sure whether the person who had helped him protect Nia had been telling him the whole truth either.
