Chapter 4: The Letter Elena Left Behind

Marcus read the first six words again.
Marcus, if Vanessa ever gets involved...
His late wife's handwriting was unmistakable. The slightly slanted letters, the long tail on the final stroke of her name, and the small heart she sometimes drew above the letter i when writing to him.
For a moment, the living room disappeared.
He was back in the hospital room where Elena had spent her final weeks, holding his hand and asking him to promise that Nia would always feel loved.
He had promised.
And now he was standing in a house where his daughter had been told she was unwanted.
“Marcus?””
Richard's voice came through the phone.
“Are you still there?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I'm here. What's in the letter?””
“I haven't read the complete document. It was attached to the original estate file, but it was marked as a private communication to you. It appears Elena instructed the estate attorney to deliver it only if certain circumstances arose.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the phone in his hand.
“Read it to me,” he said.
Richard hesitated.
“Marcus, I'd rather you read it yourself. There's something else. The original estate file contains a sealed statement from Elena's former financial adviser. He requested that it remain confidential until the trust was reviewed.””
“What does that have to do with Vanessa?””
“I don't know yet. But Elena specifically mentioned her in the letter.””
Marcus looked down.
“Send me everything.””
“I already have.””
He ended the call.
Susan Miller, the investigator, stood near the doorway with her folder tucked beneath one arm.
“Mr. Bennett, I think we should arrange separate interviews with the children.””
Marcus nodded.
“Of course.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Wait. You can't just take their statements without me.””
Susan looked at her.
“They're old enough to speak with me in an appropriate setting. I don't need you answering for them.””
“I'm their mother!””
“And they're individuals, Mrs. Bennett.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“You have no idea what kind of father Marcus is.””
Susan remained calm.
“Then I suggest you allow the investigation to establish the facts.””
Marcus walked over to Caleb and Ava.
“Would you two like to go with Ms. Miller and talk somewhere quiet?””
Caleb nodded.
Ava looked toward her mother.
“Will Mom be angry?””
Marcus crouched.
“No one should ever make you feel guilty for telling the truth.””
Ava took his hand.
Susan led the children into the study.
When the door closed, Vanessa turned toward Marcus.
“Give me that letter.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because it's private.””
“It was written by my wife.””
“Your dead wife.””
The words landed like a slap.
Marcus's expression changed.
“Don't speak about Elena like that.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“She's been dead for years, Marcus. How long are you going to keep letting her control this family?””
Marcus stared at her.
“Apparently, she understood this family better than I did.””
He opened the letter.
The first paragraph made his fingers tremble.
My darling Marcus,
If you're reading this, something has happened that I prayed would never happen. I know how much you want Nia to have a mother figure in her life. I know you will try to see the best in anyone who promises to love her.
But please, don't mistake kindness for character.
Marcus stopped.
He read the paragraph again.
Then continued.
There is something I discovered during the last six months of my life. Someone attempted to access the financial documents connected to Nia's inheritance. I initially believed it was a mistake made by the bank.
Then I discovered that the person asking questions about the trust was not someone from our family.
Marcus's stomach tightened.
The next paragraph was worse.
Her name is Vanessa Reed.
He looked up.
Vanessa was standing near the kitchen entrance.
Her face had become completely expressionless.
Marcus looked back at the letter.
I don't know how much she knows about our finances. I don't know whether she is acting alone. But I recognized her name because she contacted my former financial adviser, Daniel Reed, asking whether Nia's inheritance could be transferred into another account.
Marcus's breathing became shallow.
Daniel Reed.
The same man who had witnessed the suspicious withdrawals.
The same man who had received Vanessa's fabricated video.
He looked at his wife.
“Your maiden name was Reed.””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Daniel Reed is your brother, isn't he?””
She stared at him.
Then she looked away.
Marcus felt something inside him break.
“You told me you barely spoke to your family.””
“I don't owe you an explanation about my brother.””
“You told me you had no relatives involved in business.””
“People change.””
He lifted the letter.
“Did you know Elena had contacted him?””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“Where did you get that?””
“From Elena.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
Marcus continued reading.
Marcus, I confronted Daniel. He told me Vanessa had been asking questions about the estate because she believed she might eventually marry you.
Marcus stopped.
He looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
She said nothing.
The letter continued.
I didn't believe him at first. I thought it was an ugly misunderstanding. But Daniel showed me a message Vanessa had sent him. She wrote that if she became part of your family, she could make sure Nia's money was handled by someone who understood how to protect it.
Marcus felt sick.
Elena had known Vanessa before he married her.
Not as a casual acquaintance.
As someone who had already shown interest in his daughter's inheritance.
He turned the final page.
I don't want you to live your life suspicious of everyone. I don't want Nia growing up surrounded by fear. But if this woman ever becomes part of your home, please remember that I asked you to protect our daughter.
The trust was created with one purpose: to give Nia a future that nobody could take away from her.
I have also instructed Margaret to keep a sealed copy of the original trust documents. If anything happens to the account, she will know where to find them.
I love you. I love our little girl.
Elena.
Marcus lowered the letter.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Vanessa finally broke the silence.
“She was paranoid.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Was she?””
“She was dying, Marcus. People say strange things when they're sick.””
“She named you. She named Daniel. She described what you've done.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Convenient, isn't it? A dead woman leaves a letter accusing me, and suddenly everything I say is a lie.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You knew about the inheritance before you met me.””
“I knew Daniel had worked with Elena. That's all.””
“Why did you marry me?””
Vanessa looked offended.
“Because I loved you.””
“Then why did you try to access Nia's trust?””
“I was trying to help this family.””
“By taking eighty thousand dollars?””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“You have no idea what it costs to maintain this house!””
Marcus shook his head.
“Stop pretending this was about groceries and electricity.””
She pointed at him.
“You've always been obsessed with Elena's money. You think because she left something for Nia, nobody else deserves anything?””
“That's not what happened.””
“You gave her everything!””
“She was eight years old!””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed the letter.
Marcus pulled it away.
“Don't touch it.””
“Give it to me!””
“No.””
Her expression twisted.
“You know what? Maybe Elena was the problem all along. She made sure Nia would always come first. She made sure no woman could ever take her place.””
Marcus looked at her with disbelief.
“Elena isn't competing with you. She isn't here.””
“Exactly!””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“She gets to be the perfect dead wife while I'm stuck cleaning up everything she left behind.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“You didn't clean up anything. You used my daughter's money to buy yourself a house.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then Susan returned from the study.
“Mr. Bennett, I need to speak with you.””
Marcus folded the letter carefully.
“What happened?””
Susan glanced at Vanessa.
“Your son gave us additional information. He says his mother has been asking him to delete certain messages from her tablet.””
Vanessa went pale.
Susan continued.
“He also mentioned that Mrs. Bennett received a package several months ago from someone named Daniel.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“What package?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Nothing.””
Susan opened her folder.
“Caleb described it as a thick envelope containing photographs and bank documents.””
Marcus felt his pulse quicken.
“Photographs of what?””
Susan looked at him.
“He said they were photographs of Elena.””
Vanessa suddenly shouted.
“That's enough!””
Susan didn't flinch.
“Mrs. Bennett, I need you to remain calm.””
Vanessa turned toward Marcus.
“Your wife is dead. Let her stay dead.””
Marcus stared at her.
Then Susan spoke again.
“Mr. Bennett, there's one more thing. Caleb said his mother told him the photographs proved Elena had been hiding something from you.””
Marcus looked at the letter in his hand.
May you like
For the first time, he wondered whether Elena's warning had been about more than the inheritance.
And whether Vanessa had been waiting years to reveal something that could destroy the memory of the woman he had loved.
