Chapter 8: What Happened in Elena's Hospital Room

Marcus couldn't take his eyes off the medication record.

He read the name again.

Vanessa Reed.

The date was three days before Elena died.

He remembered that week vividly.

Elena had been weak, but she had been alert. She had spoken with Nia every afternoon through video calls and insisted on hearing about every little thing that happened at school.

Then, almost overnight, her condition had deteriorated.

The doctors had explained that her illness was progressing.

Marcus had accepted their explanation because he had no reason to question it.

Now he was staring at a document suggesting that someone connected to his wife had accessed her medical information.

“Tell me exactly what you know,” he said.

Thomas sat down.

“After Elena found me, we started exchanging messages. She told me about Daniel and Vanessa. She also told me she was worried about changes in her medication.””

“Did she say Vanessa had changed it?””

“Not directly. She said a medication she had previously tolerated was suddenly being administered differently.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He remembered Elena complaining about dizziness.

He remembered asking a nurse whether the new medication was responsible.

The nurse had told him that the dosage had been adjusted by the attending physician.

He had trusted them.

“Did she report it?””

“Yes. She asked for an explanation. But by the time I arrived at the hospital, the medication records had been updated.””

Marcus looked down.

“Updated how?””

Thomas opened another folder.

He placed two documents side by side.

“One is the original medication administration record. The other is a later copy obtained through a formal records request.””

Marcus studied them.

The original listed one dosage.

The later version listed another.

The dates were identical.

He looked up.

“Who changed it?””

Thomas pointed to a digital access log.

The system showed a user account connected to Vanessa's contractor credentials.

Marcus stood abruptly.

“That's enough. I'm calling the hospital.””

Thomas raised a hand.

“Please wait.””

“Why?””

“Because the hospital has already denied that anything improper happened. They said Vanessa's access was administrative and that any medication adjustment had been approved by a physician.””

“Then we'll speak to the physician.””

Thomas nodded.

“That's what I tried. But the doctor retired shortly after Elena died.””

Marcus paced across the room.

“Where is he now?””

“I don't know. But I found someone who worked with him.””

“Who?””

“A nurse named Patricia Wells.””

Marcus stopped.

“Did she see something?””

Thomas opened another folder.

“She filed an internal complaint two days after Elena died. The complaint was dismissed without a formal investigation.””

Marcus took the document.

The letter described an irregular medication entry and an unexplained request to remove a patient's family member from a medical communication list.

At the bottom was Patricia's signature.

Marcus remembered the name.

Patricia had been one of Elena's favorite nurses.

He pulled out his phone.

“I'm finding her.””

Thomas nodded.

“I already have her contact information.””

He handed Marcus a business card.

A moment later, Marcus called.

The phone rang several times.

Finally, a woman answered.

“Hello?””

“Ms. Wells? My name is Marcus Bennett.

My wife was Elena Bennett. You cared for her during her final hospitalization.””

There was a long silence.

Then the woman spoke.

“I remember Elena.””

“I'm reviewing her medical records. I understand you filed a complaint shortly after her death.””

Another silence.

“I wondered when someone would ask about that.””

Marcus sat down.

“What happened?””

Patricia lowered her voice.

“Mr. Bennett, I can't discuss confidential medical details without the appropriate process. But I can tell you that I was uncomfortable with something I witnessed.””

“What?””

“Your wife's medication record was changed after an administrative request. I questioned it because the dosage didn't match the original physician's order.””

Marcus felt his fingers tighten around the phone.

“Who made the request?””

“Vanessa Reed.””

Thomas looked up.

Marcus continued.

“Did you confront her?””

“Yes. She told me she was correcting an administrative error. I asked to speak with the physician, but she said the doctor had already approved it.””

“Was that true?””

“I don't know. I never received confirmation.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Patricia's voice softened.

“I tried. I called the number listed for you, but a woman answered and told me you didn't want to be contacted about Elena's medical affairs.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“Who was the woman?””

“I believe it was Vanessa.””

He looked toward Thomas.

“Did you keep a copy of your complaint?””

“Yes. I still have it.””

“Can we meet?””

Patricia hesitated.

“Not without proper authorization.””

“I understand. My attorney will contact you.””

She paused.

“Mr. Bennett?””

“Yes?””

“There's one thing I want you to know. Elena was not confused during those final days. She knew something was wrong. She asked me to write down the name of the person who accessed her medication records.””

Marcus's heart began pounding.

“Whose name?””

“Vanessa Reed.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't move.

Thomas slowly closed the folder.

“Elena knew.””

Marcus looked at the photograph of his wife on the desk.

“She tried to warn me.””

Thomas nodded.

“And she was afraid no one would believe her.””

Marcus lowered his head.

He felt guilt rising inside him, sharp and suffocating.

He had been there.

He had sat beside Elena's bed.

He had kissed her forehead and promised that everything would be okay.

And while he was holding her hand, Vanessa had apparently been accessing records that could affect his wife's treatment.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Richard appeared.

The forensic accountant has identified another suspicious transfer. The money from Nia's trust was used to purchase the property, but the property was subsequently transferred to an entity controlled by Daniel Reed.

Marcus read it.

Then another message arrived.

There is also a court filing from yesterday. Vanessa has submitted an emergency petition requesting temporary custody of Caleb and Ava and restrictions on your contact with all three children.

Marcus stood.

“She filed again?””

Thomas looked up.

“What happened?””

Marcus showed him the message.

Thomas's expression darkened.

“She knew you were going to find the medical records.””

Marcus called Richard.

“What is this emergency petition?””

Richard answered immediately.

“Vanessa claims you're emotionally unstable and that you're threatening her. She says you're using the children to retaliate against her.””

Marcus laughed once, without humor.

“She's still doing it.””

“Unfortunately, yes. But we have the original video, the messages, and the guardianship document. Her petition is not as strong as she thinks.””

“Can we stop her?””

“We're preparing an objection. I also recommend that you document every interaction and avoid direct confrontation.””

Marcus looked at Thomas.

“Understood.””

After the call, Thomas leaned forward.

“There's another reason I came.””

He removed the flash drive from the briefcase.

“Before Elena died, she asked me to investigate Daniel's involvement in the adoption agency. I found a pattern of financial transactions.””

Marcus looked at the drive.

“What kind of pattern?””

“Money was moved from accounts intended for children into private investment companies. Daniel helped arrange some of the transfers.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She helped him access records and identify people with money.””

Marcus stared at him.

Thomas continued.

“There's a recording of a conversation between them.””

He connected the flash drive to the laptop.

A file appeared.

The recording was dated six months before Elena died.

Thomas pressed play.

Daniel's voice came through first.

“Are you sure the trust is worth that much?””

Vanessa answered.

“More than enough. Elena has already made the mistake of putting everything in Nia's name.””

Daniel laughed.

“What about Marcus?””

“He'll sign whatever I put in front of him once we're married.””

“And if he doesn't?””

Vanessa's voice became cold.

“Then we'll make sure he has something else to worry about.””

A pause followed.

Then Daniel asked:

“What about Elena?””

Vanessa answered without hesitation.

“She won't be around forever.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

Daniel said:

“You sound certain.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“I'm just saying that sick people don't need much help making bad decisions.””

Marcus slammed the laptop shut.

Thomas immediately leaned forward.

“Marcus—”

“Turn it off.””

“I'm sorry.””

Marcus walked to the window.

His hands were shaking.

For years, he had believed Elena's death was a tragedy that no one could have prevented.

Now he had heard Vanessa discussing her illness as an opportunity.

He turned back.

“Where did you get this recording?””

“From a backup account Daniel used. I accessed it through a former colleague who had worked with him.””

“Can it be authenticated?””

“I believe so. But your attorney will need to arrange that.””

Marcus nodded.

He looked at the hospital records again.

Then at the recording.

A terrible possibility had taken shape.

But he refused to make an accusation without proof.

“Thomas, I want everything preserved. Every file, every message, every document.””

Thomas nodded.

“I've made several copies.””

Marcus's phone rang.

It was Ava's school.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice sounded urgent.

“Mr. Bennett? This is Mrs.

Carter from the school office. We have a situation involving your daughter.””

Marcus stood.

“What happened?””

“Someone came to collect Nia. She presented a document claiming to be authorized to take her.””

“Who?””

The woman hesitated.

“Mrs. Vanessa Bennett.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

“Where is Nia?””

“She's safe in the principal's office. But Mrs. Bennett is insisting that the school release her.””

Marcus grabbed his keys.

“Do not release my daughter to anyone until I arrive.””

“Of course, sir.””

He ended the call.

Thomas stood immediately.

“I'm coming with you.””

They drove to the school.

When Marcus entered the principal's office, Vanessa was sitting in a chair with a folder on her lap.

Nia stood beside the principal, clutching her teddy bear.

The little girl's eyes filled when she saw her father.

“Daddy!””

Marcus crossed the room and lifted her into his arms.

Vanessa stood.

“You have no right to make a scene.””

Marcus ignored her.

“Is she okay?””

The principal nodded.

“She hasn't been harmed. But Mrs. Bennett presented a temporary guardianship document.””

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

“You don't have guardianship.””

“I am her stepmother.””

“You are no longer authorized to collect her.””

Vanessa smiled.

“That's what you think.””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a stamped court document.

Marcus took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

A judge had granted a temporary emergency order pending a hearing.

It was not a final custody ruling, but it contained a restriction that could affect where Nia stayed.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“How did you get this so quickly?””

Vanessa adjusted her necklace.

“Maybe the court finally understands what kind of father you are.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“That's not what this order says.””

Vanessa looked at him.

Her expression changed.

“Who are you?””

Thomas stared at her.

“Someone who knew Elena.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Then she whispered:

“You should have stayed away.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a photograph.

He placed it on the principal's desk.

It showed Vanessa standing outside Elena's hospital room.

The date was visible.

It was taken the night before Elena's final medical emergency.

But there was something else.

Vanessa was holding a small brown medicine bottle.

Marcus stared at the image.

Thomas spoke quietly.

“This photograph was taken by a hospital security camera. The original footage has been preserved.””

Vanessa's hands began to tremble.

May you like

And then, for the first time, she said something that sounded less like an excuse and more like a confession.

“I didn't know it would happen that night.””
