Amused

Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Wheel

I looked at the photograph until the faces blurred.

Vanessa.

Standing beside Claire's car.

On the night of the accident.

My wife had been there.

Not years later.

Not after Daniel recruited her.

That night.

Eleven years earlier.

I turned toward my father.

"How do you know?""

He lowered himself into the chair.

"Because I saw her.""

"Then why didn't you tell the police?""

"Daniel threatened to expose the company accounts and frame me for the illegal transfers. He said if I spoke, Maya would lose everything.""

I shook my head.

"She was four years old.""

"I know.""

"You let her grow up believing her mother died alone.""

My father looked at the photograph.

"I was afraid.""

I laughed without humor.

"Everyone in this family was afraid. And Maya was the one who paid for it.""

Detective Collins placed the photograph inside a transparent evidence sleeve.

"We need to preserve this. Do you know where the original was kept?""

My father nodded.

"At the cabin. In a locked cabinet beneath the old workshop.""

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you retrieve it?""

"Because Daniel knew about the cabin. I was afraid he'd destroy the evidence.""

Detective Collins turned toward me.

"We'll arrange a search with the appropriate authorization.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Was Vanessa driving?""

My father nodded.

"She had Claire's keys.""

"Did you see the accident happen?""

"No. I arrived after the vehicle left the road.""

"Then how do you know she moved it?""

My father closed his eyes.

"Because she told me.""

The room went silent.

"What?""

He looked at me.

"She said she had moved the car because Daniel wanted the accident to look like a single-vehicle collision.""

I felt my hands curl into fists.

"Did Claire die at the scene?""

My father shook his head.

"No.""

I stared at him.

"Then what happened?""

He took a long breath.

"She was alive when I reached her. She had a head injury, but she was conscious. She kept asking for Maya.""

Maya began crying.

My father continued.

"I told her Maya was safe. I told her I would protect her.""

He looked at the little girl.

"I failed.""

Maya slowly stood.

"Did Mom say anything else?""

He nodded.

"She asked me to tell Marcus she loved him.""

I looked away.

My father continued.

"Then she asked me to remember one thing.""

"What?""

He looked directly at Maya.

"She said, 'Don't let them turn my daughter into something they can sell.''"

Maya covered her mouth.

I reached for her.

She leaned against me.

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything except her quiet sobbing.

Detective Collins waited until we had composed ourselves.

"Mr. Harrison, I need to ask you something. Do you know whether Vanessa had any reason to move the vehicle?""

My father nodded.

"Daniel told her the original research was hidden in a compartment beneath the passenger seat.""

I frowned.

"Why would it be there?""

"Claire had hidden a storage device inside the seat structure. Daniel wanted it.""

I looked at the silver USB drive.

"Was that the same device?""

"No. That was a backup. The original was hidden in the car.""

I felt a chill.

"What happened to it?""

My father looked toward Detective Collins.

"Vanessa took it.""

The detective wrote something down.

"Do you know where she kept it?""

"No. But she told me she had transferred it to Daniel.""

I stared at him.

"Then why did she keep the photographs and documents?""

"Because she wanted leverage.""

That sounded exactly like Vanessa.

She had spent years collecting secrets.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Private documents.

And now she had burned the robot because she believed it contained evidence that could expose everything.

Detective Collins stood.

"We'll need formal statements from all of you. For now, I'd recommend that Marcus and Maya stay somewhere secure.""

I nodded.

"We're staying with a friend.""

He handed me his card.

"If Vanessa contacts either of you, preserve the messages. Don't confront her.""

I almost laughed.

The confrontation had already happened.

But I understood.

We left the building with my father's promise that he would cooperate fully.

Maya didn't say much during the drive.

She watched the passing buildings through the window.

Finally, she spoke.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"Do you hate Grandpa?""

I glanced at her.

"I don't know yet.""

"Do you hate Mom?""

I gripped the steering wheel.

"I don't know how to answer that either.""

She nodded.

"Can I tell you something?""

"Anything.""

"I don't think I want to build robots anymore.""

My heart sank.

"Why?""

She looked at the cardboard box containing Nova's remains.

"Because everyone keeps fighting over them. Every time I build something, someone tries to take it.""

I pulled into a quiet parking lot.

Then I turned toward her.

"Maya, listen to me. What happened isn't your fault.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

She nodded, but tears filled her eyes.

I reached across the console and held her hand.

"You built Nova because you wanted to help people. That was a good thing. Don't let what adults did to you change who you are.""

She looked down.

"What if I never feel safe building anything again?""

"Then you don't have to build anything until you're ready.""

She leaned against my shoulder.

For the first time in days, she looked exhausted rather than frightened.

I drove us to David's guesthouse.

It was a small property behind his law office, with two bedrooms and a security gate.

He had arranged for someone to bring us dinner.

Maya went upstairs to shower.

I sat at the kitchen table and reviewed the documents.

At 8:17 p.m., my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I stared at the screen.

Then I answered.

"Marcus.""

Her voice was shaking.

"Please don't hang up.""

"What do you want?""

"I need to explain.""

"You've had eleven years.""

"I didn't know Claire would die.""

I closed my eyes.

"That's what you're going with?""

"I swear. Daniel told me the car was going to be moved. He said Claire would be taken somewhere safe.""

"Taken where?""

"I don't know.""

"You were there.""

"I was trying to help.""

"You drove her car.""

Vanessa began crying.

"Daniel told me the original research was inside. He said we needed to recover it before the police arrived.""

"And Claire?""

"She was unconscious.""

I stood.

"Was she breathing?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Was she breathing, Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

My entire body went cold.

"You left her.""

"I was told the ambulance was coming.""

"By whom?""

"Daniel.""

I slammed my hand against the table.

"Did you call one?""

"No.""

I couldn't speak.

She continued desperately.

"I thought your father would handle it. He said he was going to stay with her.""

"And you drove away.""

"I had Brielle to think about!""

I stared at the phone.

"Brielle wasn't even born yet.""

Vanessa went silent.

I felt something inside me turn to ice.

"How did you know about Brielle?""

She whispered:

"Marcus, there's something else.""

I waited.

"Daniel told me to stay away from Claire. He said she was dangerous. He said she would destroy everything we'd worked for.""

"Who is we?""

"Me and Daniel.""

I sat down slowly.

"How long were you involved with my brother?""

She began crying harder.

"Before you and I got married.""

The words landed like a physical blow.

I looked toward the staircase.

Maya was upstairs.

I lowered my voice.

"You were involved with Daniel before you married me?""

"Yes.""

"Did he tell you to marry me?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Answer me.""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

"Because he needed access to your company.""

I gripped the phone.

"Explain.""

"Your father had created a financial structure that protected the research. You were the only person who could approve certain company transactions. Daniel believed marrying into your family would make it easier to get access.""

I stared at the wall.

"So our marriage was a business arrangement?""

"It wasn't supposed to become this.""

"What was it supposed to be?""

She cried.

"I did care about you, Marcus.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You married me to access my company, helped my brother steal my daughter's invention, and burned the evidence.""

"I made mistakes.""

"Mistakes?""

"I was scared!""

I heard a faint sound behind me.

I turned.

Maya stood at the bottom of the staircase.

She was holding her phone.

Her face was pale.

I immediately ended the call.

"Sweetheart?""

She looked at me.

"Was Mom pretending to love you?""

I couldn't answer.

She came closer.

"I heard what she said.""

I reached for her.

She stepped into my arms.

"Does that mean she never wanted me?""

I held her tightly.

"No. It means the adults in your life made terrible choices. It doesn't change how much you deserve to be loved.""

She cried against my chest.

I didn't try to stop her.

Then her phone vibrated.

She pulled away and looked at the screen.

"That's weird.""

"What?""

She turned the phone toward me.

It was a message from an unknown number.

*Maya, I know what your mother did. I know what Daniel did too. But your father doesn't know the whole story.*

Another message arrived.

*Your mother didn't leave Claire alone. Someone else came back after Vanessa drove away.*

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who sent that?""

Maya shook her head.

Then a final message appeared.

*Ask your grandfather what happened to the baby in the passenger seat.*

I stared at the words.

The baby.

Maya.

I looked toward the staircase.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, it was Detective Collins.

I answered immediately.

"Detective?""

His voice was urgent.

"Marcus, we just received a call from the hospital.""

"What happened?""

"Your father has been attacked.""

My heart stopped.

"Is he alive?""

"Yes, but he's in critical condition.""

I stood.

"Who did it?""

"We're reviewing the security footage.""

"Do you know who entered his room?""

There was a pause.

Then the detective said:

"Your brother.""

I looked at Maya.

She was staring at the anonymous message.

The detective continued.

"There's something else. Before the attack, your father managed to give a statement to a nurse.""

"What did he say?""

The detective lowered his voice.

"He said the baby in Claire's car wasn't Maya.""

I felt the room tilt.

"What?""

"According to your father, Claire was carrying another child that night.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Another child?""

"Yes.""

The detective paused.

"And Marcus, he gave us a name.""

I gripped the phone.

"Whose name?""

"Daniel.""

I stared at Maya.

Then the detective finished.

"Your father claims Daniel was the biological father of Claire's unborn child.""

For several seconds, the world seemed to stop.

Then Maya whispered something that made the revelation even worse.

"Dad...""

I turned.

She was looking at the anonymous messages.

There was one more photograph attached.

It showed Claire holding a newborn baby.

But this time, the child's face was visible.

May you like

And beside Claire stood a man wearing my wedding ring.

It was Daniel.
