Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

"Nobody touches that laptop.""
Vanessa's voice came from the doorway.
I turned.
She stood there with her arms folded, her expression carefully arranged into something resembling concern.
Brielle was behind her.
Neither looked surprised to see the computer open.
I ended the call with David after telling him to preserve every document and investigate the transfer authorization.
Then I faced my wife.
"How long have you been planning to take my house?""
Vanessa blinked.
"What?""
"Don't pretend you don't understand.""
She glanced at Maya's laptop.
Then at the memory card.
Her eyes narrowed.
"Have you been listening to private recordings?""
"Private recordings made in my own garage?""
"That's not what I meant.""
"Then explain what you meant.""
Vanessa walked into the room and closed the door.
"Marcus, you're exhausted. You've just come home from a business trip, and Maya has clearly been upsetting you with stories.""
I almost laughed.
"Stories?""
"She's twelve. She doesn't understand adult situations.""
Maya stood beside her desk.
"I understand what I heard.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Nobody asked you.""
I stepped between them.
"You will not speak to her like that.""
Vanessa stared at me.
For a moment, the pleasant expression disappeared.
Then she sighed.
"Fine. Let's discuss this like adults.""
"Good. Start with the forged signature.""
Her lips parted.
Then closed.
Brielle looked at her mother.
"Mom?""
Vanessa raised one hand, silently telling her to stay quiet.
I noticed.
So did Maya.
"What's going on?"" Maya asked.
Vanessa ignored her.
"Marcus, the house is a family asset. We've discussed financial arrangements before.""
"No. We haven't discussed transferring my ownership.""
"You always said you wanted to provide for us.""
"I did. I paid for this home. I paid for the renovations. I paid for Brielle's private school tuition.""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"Don't use money against us.""
"I'm asking why someone submitted a transfer authorization with my forged signature.""
"Maybe it was a misunderstanding.""
"Who submitted it?""
"I don't know.""
"Then why are you nervous?""
She stepped closer.
"Because you're treating me like a criminal!""
I looked directly into her eyes.
"Then stop giving me reasons to ask criminal questions.""
Brielle suddenly spoke.
"Mom, tell him.""
Vanessa spun around.
"Brielle, be quiet.""
"But you said he wouldn't find out!""
The room went silent.
Vanessa's face went pale.
I turned slowly toward Brielle.
"What wouldn't I find out?""
Brielle looked at her mother.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
"Go downstairs.""
Brielle pulled away.
"No! I'm tired of everyone blaming me!""
Maya stared at her.
"Nobody said you did everything.""
Brielle laughed bitterly.
"Of course you didn't. You get to be the perfect little daughter.""
Maya lowered her eyes.
I recognized the expression.
It was the look she wore whenever Brielle started attacking her.
The look of someone preparing to apologize for something she hadn't done.
I stepped forward.
"Brielle, I want you to answer one question.""
She crossed her arms.
"What?""
"Did you know your mother was submitting documents with my signature?""
Brielle hesitated.
Then she looked down.
"I didn't sign anything.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Vanessa interrupted.
"Marcus, stop interrogating a child.""
I turned toward her.
"Then you answer.""
She shook her head.
"This is unbelievable.""
I took out my phone and called David again.
"David, I'm putting you on speaker.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Don't you dare.""
The call connected.
"Marcus?""
"David, I'm here with Vanessa and Brielle. I need you to explain what you found.""
My attorney's voice filled the room.
"The document was submitted electronically through a property services company. It includes a scanned signature that appears to have been copied from an older mortgage document.""
Vanessa looked away.
David continued.
"The transfer would have removed Marcus's name from the property records and placed the ownership interest into a trust.""
I frowned.
"Whose trust?""
There was a pause.
"One associated with Vanessa's daughter.""
Brielle's eyes widened.
"Me?""
Vanessa snapped.
"David, you have no right to discuss private family matters.""
"I'm discussing a document bearing my client's signature without his authorization," David replied.
"I have every right to ask who submitted it.""
I looked at my wife.
"Did you do this?""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Marcus, I was trying to secure Brielle's future.""
"By stealing my house?""
"It was never about stealing!""
"Then what was it about?""
She took a breath.
"You don't understand how difficult things have been.""
I stared at her.
"Explain it.""
Vanessa's voice softened.
"When you married me, you promised this would be a family. You promised Brielle wouldn't always feel like an outsider.""
I looked toward Maya.
"Was that why you made my daughter an outsider instead?""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"That's not fair.""
"Is it fair that she has to ask permission to use the garage? Is it fair that you took her notebook? Is it fair that you burned nine months of her work?""
"She was refusing to cooperate!""
"She was refusing to let someone steal her invention!""
Vanessa raised her voice.
"Because Brielle needed something of her own!""
The words hung in the air.
Brielle looked at her mother.
Maya stared at the floor.
I felt a cold, unfamiliar clarity settle over me.
There it was.
The truth.
Vanessa hadn't been trying to help both girls.
She'd decided that Brielle deserved everything Maya had worked for simply because she wanted it.
I turned toward David's voice.
"What do we do now?""
"Do not sign anything. Do not delete any messages or recordings. I'll send you the filing information and begin the process of challenging the transfer.""
"Understood.""
"And Marcus?""
"Yes?""
"There's another issue.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"The registration for the state innovation competition was submitted yesterday.""
I looked at Maya.
"Under whose name?""
David paused.
"Brielle's.""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"That's a legitimate registration.""
David continued.
"Unfortunately, the project description appears to contain material copied directly from Maya's original engineering notes.""
Maya whispered, "I knew it.""
I closed my eyes for a second.
Then I asked, "Can you prove that?""
"Yes. We have the original files and timestamps if Maya's backups are intact.""
"They are," Maya said.
David heard her.
"Good. Don't change anything. Keep the original records.""
I ended the call.
Vanessa walked toward me.
"You're going to ruin Brielle's future.""
I looked at her.
"No. I'm going to stop you from stealing Maya's.""
Brielle suddenly started crying.
"Mom said you would understand!""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
Brielle wiped her face.
"She said the house would belong to me eventually. She said you were going to put everything in my name because Maya would get money from her mother's family.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"What did you tell her?""
Vanessa's expression was frozen.
Brielle continued.
"You said Maya didn't need anything because she already had her dad. You said I needed a head start.""
Maya looked up.
"Mom said that?""
Brielle nodded.
"She said if we won the competition, people would think I was smart enough to get into the best schools. Then she said the money from the scholarship would help us move.""
I frowned.
"Move where?""
Vanessa stepped toward Brielle.
"Stop talking.""
But Brielle was crying too hard to stop.
"You said we were going to California.""
The room went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
"California?""
She pressed her lips together.
"That's not relevant.""
"You're planning to leave?""
"I was considering options.""
"With my daughter? With money from a stolen invention? And a house transferred using my forged signature?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You make everything sound terrible.""
I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Then Maya spoke.
"Did you ever want me to win?""
Vanessa turned.
"What?""
"The competition. Did you ever want me to win?""
For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
Maya stepped closer.
"I worked every weekend. I skipped birthday parties. I saved my allowance. I watched videos until two in the morning because I wanted Nova to work.""
Her voice trembled.
"Did you ever feel proud of me?""
Vanessa looked at her watch.
That small gesture was all the answer Maya needed.
She turned away.
I reached for my daughter's shoulder.
"Let's pack a few things.""
Vanessa immediately blocked the doorway.
"You're not taking her anywhere.""
I looked at her.
"Move.""
"This is her home.""
"It stopped being a home when you made her afraid to walk into her own garage.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"You cannot just decide everything.""
I took out my phone.
"I'm calling the police to document the property damage and the evidence of the forged filing. David can advise us on the next steps.""
Her face changed.
"Marcus, don't.""
I didn't answer.
I dialed.
While I spoke to the dispatcher, Maya packed her schoolbag and a small overnight bag.
Brielle stood near the window, silently watching.
When Maya returned, she was holding a framed photograph of herself and Nova.
It showed the robot standing beside her workbench, one mechanical hand raised.
Maya had a huge smile.
"Can I bring this?""
I swallowed.
"Of course.""
We walked downstairs.
Vanessa followed us, talking rapidly about misunderstandings, family disagreements, and how everyone was overreacting.
But I barely heard her.
At the front door, Maya stopped.
"Dad?""
I turned.
"What is it?""
She looked toward the garage.
"Can we go back for one thing?""
"What?""
"My blue toolbox.""
I nodded.
We walked outside.
The fire pit was still smoking.
The burned remains of Nova lay scattered across the concrete.
Maya crouched and picked up a small metal component.
"This was her first movement sensor," she whispered.
I watched her place it carefully inside her backpack.
Then she looked at the garage.
"There's something else I didn't tell you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What?""
She hesitated.
"Nova wasn't just recording Mom and Brielle.""
I stared at her.
"What do you mean?""
Maya pulled out her phone and opened a photograph.
It showed a printed document lying on Vanessa's desk.
At the top was the logo of a technology company.
Below it was a title:
*NOVA AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM — ORIGINAL INVENTOR: MAYA HARRISON.*
I looked at her.
"Where did you get this?""
"From Mom's office. Three weeks ago.""
"Why was it there?""
Maya swallowed.
"Because I think Mom had already sold Nova.""
I stared at the document.
There was a purchase amount.
There was a buyer's name.
And beneath the buyer's name was a signature that made my blood run cold.
It belonged to a man I knew.
A man who had attended my wedding.
May you like
A man who had been my business partner for eleven years.
*My older brother, Daniel.*
