Amused

Chapter 7: The Child Who Was Never Supposed to Survive

I stared at the photograph on Maya's phone.

Claire was holding a little girl.

The child wore a yellow sweater, white socks, and tiny red shoes.

The same shoes appeared in the photograph of the accident scene.

I looked at Maya.

"Where did you find this picture?""

"In Mom's old album. It was in the office cabinet with Grandpa's documents.""

"Do you know when it was taken?""

She shook her head.

"No. But look at the back.""

She enlarged another photograph.

There was a handwritten date.

November 14.

The accident had happened on November 14, eleven years earlier.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"That's the night Mom died.""

Maya nodded.

"And the little girl looks like me.""

I looked again.

The child's hair was dark brown, just like Maya's. Her eyes were difficult to see, but the shape of her face was familiar.

Too familiar.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Explain this.""

Vanessa was crying now.

"I don't know everything.""

"Then tell me what you know.""

She sat down.

"Claire had been working with your father for years. When she became pregnant, she started worrying about the project. She thought Daniel might use it to develop military technology.""

"Why would she have a child in that situation?""

"She wasn't planning to have Maya at first.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Claire discovered she was pregnant after the first prototype was completed. Your father wanted her to stop working. Daniel wanted her to continue.""

I looked at Maya.

She was listening without blinking.

Vanessa continued.

"Claire eventually decided to leave the project. She wanted to raise her daughter somewhere peaceful. She wanted nothing to do with Daniel's company.""

"Then why was she meeting him?""

"Because he found out she'd copied the original research.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"That doesn't explain the shoe.""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Claire had taken Maya with her that night.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Why?""

"She was going to leave town. She wanted to meet your father first, give him the original research, and then disappear.""

I shook my head.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Because she was afraid Daniel would find out.""

I stared at her.

"She was married to me.""

"I know.""

"She trusted me.""

Vanessa said nothing.

Maya finally spoke.

"Did Mom think Dad would hurt us?""

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

"No, sweetheart. She was afraid of Daniel.""

Maya looked at me.

"Then why didn't she tell you?""

I had no answer.

I had spent eleven years believing Claire's death was a terrible accident.

I had built my entire life around that belief.

I'd raised Maya alone for four years before meeting Vanessa. I'd told my daughter stories about her mother. I'd shown her photographs, kept her favorite books, and promised that Claire would always be part of our family.

Now I was learning that the woman I loved might have been running for her life.

And my own family had helped conceal it.

I took out my phone.

"David needs to see this.""

I sent him the photographs.

A few seconds later, he called.

"Marcus, where are you?""

"At home. We found something connected to Claire's accident.""

His tone changed.

"Don't discuss it over the phone. Can you come to my office?""

"Yes.""

"Bring the original photographs and documents. Don't alter anything.""

I looked at Maya.

"We're going.""

Vanessa stood.

"I'm coming too.""

I turned toward her.

"No.""

"Marcus, I can help.""

"You've had eleven years to help.""

She looked at Maya.

"Sweetheart, please. I never wanted you to get hurt.""

Maya's expression didn't change.

"Then why did you hurt me?""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

I took Maya's hand.

We left.

David's office was on the fourth floor of a downtown building.

He met us in the reception area and immediately escorted us into a conference room.

A digital forensic specialist named Ethan was already waiting.

He wore glasses, carried a laptop, and had a small equipment case beside his chair.

David examined the photographs.

"This is significant," he said.

"Significant how?""

"The accident report stated that Claire was the only occupant of the vehicle. If Maya was present, that report may be incomplete.""

Ethan leaned forward.

"Do you have the original files?""

Maya handed him her phone.

"I have the photographs, but some were scanned from an old album.""

He examined the images.

"Do you recognize this location?""

I looked at the background.

A stone wall.

A narrow road.

An old wooden sign.

My father's lake property.

"Yes," I said.

"That's the road leading to our family's cabin.""

David looked up.

"Was the accident near there?""

"No. It was reported on Highway 16, about forty miles away.""

Ethan enlarged the photograph.

"Then why was Claire photographed at the cabin on the night of the accident?""

I stared at the timestamp.

9:18 p.m.

The accident had reportedly occurred at 10:16 p.m.

I leaned forward.

"Can you examine the image metadata?""

"I'll try. But first, I'd like to see the original album.""

Maya opened the wooden box.

Ethan removed the photograph carefully and placed it beneath a scanner.

Several minutes passed.

Then he looked at the screen.

"Interesting.""

"What?""

"The photograph was taken with a digital camera, not printed directly from film. The timestamp appears to be authentic.""

David folded his arms.

"Can you determine whether it was modified?""

Ethan nodded.

"Not conclusively yet. But there's something else.""

He enlarged the image.

Behind Claire's car was a second vehicle.

A dark SUV.

I recognized it.

It belonged to my father.

"That's Dad's car.""

David looked at me.

"Could he have been there before the accident?""

"Apparently.""

Ethan opened another file.

"There's a possibility we can recover additional photographs from the original storage device.""

"What storage device?""

"The USB drive you mentioned.""

David placed the silver drive on the table.

Ethan examined it.

"This is an older encrypted storage device. I'll need to make a forensic copy before attempting recovery.""

He connected it to a protected workstation.

The screen filled with lines of technical information.

Then a folder appeared.

Inside were several files.

One was labeled:

*CLAIRE_FINAL_RECORDING.*

My hands went cold.

"Open it.""

Ethan hesitated.

"I'll verify the file first.""

He ran several checks, then played the audio.

At first, there was only static.

Then Claire's voice.

"Marcus, if you ever hear this, I need you to know I didn't leave because I stopped loving you.""

I stopped breathing.

Her voice.

After eleven years.

I pressed both hands against the table.

Maya began crying.

"Mom...""

The recording continued.

"I found out what Daniel was doing with Dad's research. I thought I could stop him before he sold everything. But I was wrong.""

There was a rustling sound.

Then another voice.

My father's.

"Claire, you have to go. Take the child and leave now.""

Claire replied:

"I can't leave Marcus behind.""

My father sounded desperate.

"He's already involved, whether he knows it or not.""

I leaned closer.

"What does that mean?""

The recording continued.

Then came a sentence that made David look at me.

"Daniel has been using Marcus's company accounts to finance the project. If the authorities investigate, your husband will take the blame.""

I felt sick.

My father continued.

"I've tried to stop him. I swear I have.""

Claire's voice broke.

"Then help me get Maya somewhere safe.""

There was a loud noise.

A door slamming.

Then Daniel's voice.

"You're not going anywhere.""

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Maya held my hand so tightly that her fingers hurt.

David finally broke the silence.

"Marcus, we need to involve law enforcement.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

But Ethan wasn't finished.

He had opened another file.

"There's one more recording.""

I looked at him.

"Play it.""

He pressed the button.

This time, my father's voice was clearer.

"Daniel, the research belongs to the trust. You cannot sell it.""

Daniel answered.

"Then change the trust.""

"I won't.""

"You're making a mistake.""

My father sighed.

"Your brother doesn't know what you've done.""

Daniel laughed.

"Marcus doesn't know anything. He never has.""

Then came another voice.

Vanessa.

"Daniel, the child is still there.""

My entire body went rigid.

Daniel answered:

"Then get rid of the problem.""

The recording stopped.

Maya began shaking.

I stood abruptly.

"What did he mean by that?""

David raised one hand.

"Marcus, sit down.""

"No. What did he mean?""

Ethan replayed the final seconds.

The voices were unmistakable.

Vanessa had been there.

Daniel had known Maya was present.

And someone had discussed getting rid of the problem.

David looked at me.

"We need to establish whether this recording is authentic and when it was made.""

I turned toward Maya.

She was staring at the screen.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"Why did Mom keep me?""

The question broke something inside me.

I knelt beside her.

"Because you were never the problem, sweetheart.""

"But they said—"

"I don't care what they said. You were a little girl. You deserved to be protected.""

She buried her face against my shoulder.

David quietly closed the conference room door.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

"Marcus, this is Detective Collins. I'm calling about the new evidence concerning Claire Harrison.""

"Yes?""

"We've reviewed the initial information your attorney provided.""

I looked at David.

The detective continued.

"We have a witness who has agreed to speak with us.""

"Who?""

A pause.

"Your father.""

My mouth went dry.

"That's impossible. My father died eleven years ago.""

The detective took a breath.

"Mr. Harrison, I know this is difficult. But according to our records, your father didn't die when your family was told he did.""

I stared at the phone.

"What?""

"He's alive.""

May you like

The room went silent.

"And he has been living under another identity.""
