Chapter 4: The Brother Behind the Betrayal

For several seconds, I couldn't take my eyes off the document.
Daniel Harrison.
My older brother.
The man who had taught me how to ride a bicycle, helped me pay for college, and stood beside me at my wedding.
The man who had once promised our father that he would always look after me.
Now his name was printed beneath a purchase agreement for my twelve-year-old daughter's invention.
I looked at Maya.
"Where exactly did you find this?""
"In Mom's office. It was inside a blue folder. I took a picture because I recognized Nova's name.""
"Did you read the entire document?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't have time. Mom came back, and I had to put it where I found it.""
I zoomed in on the photograph.
The document contained a preliminary acquisition agreement between a company called Harrison Innovations and Vanessa's private consulting business.
The proposed purchase price was $450,000.
Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
For an invention that Vanessa had called a worthless toy.
My stomach tightened.
"Did your mother ever tell you she was selling Nova?""
"No.""
"Did she tell you Daniel was involved?""
"No.""
I looked toward the house.
Through the kitchen window, I could see Vanessa pacing with her phone pressed against her ear.
She looked angry.
Not frightened.
Angry.
I took a screenshot of Maya's photograph and sent it to David, my attorney.
Then I called Daniel.
He answered on the third ring.
"Marcus! You're back early. How was Chicago?""
His cheerful voice made my skin crawl.
"Daniel, we need to talk.""
"Everything okay?""
"Have you been buying something from Vanessa?""
Silence.
It lasted only two seconds.
But I knew my brother well enough to recognize when he was calculating his next sentence.
"What are you talking about?""
"Nova.""
Another pause.
"Ah. The little robot.""
I stared at the phone.
"How do you know about Nova?""
"Vanessa mentioned it. Said Maya had been working on some school project.""
"School project?""
"Don't get upset. I was just asking questions.""
I glanced at the photograph again.
"Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth of questions?""
His voice changed.
"Where did you get that number?""
Maya looked up at me.
I turned away from her.
"So it's real.""
Daniel sighed.
"Marcus, this is business. You don't need to turn everything into a family crisis.""
"Did you sign an acquisition agreement for my daughter's invention?""
"Vanessa owns the project.""
"No, she doesn't.""
"She told me she had permission.""
"From whom?""
"From you.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The lie.
Daniel continued.
"She said you were funding the development and had agreed that she could manage the commercial rights. I assumed everything was legitimate.""
"Did you ever meet Maya?""
"Not personally.""
"You've been in my house. You've eaten dinner at my table. You've watched her work on that robot.""
"Marcus, I run a company. I don't keep track of every little hobby.""
I looked at Maya.
She was holding the framed photograph of Nova.
Her thumb moved slowly across the glass.
I lowered my voice.
"Daniel, that isn't a hobby. It's nine months of my daughter's life.""
"Fine. Then let's discuss compensation.""
I almost dropped the phone.
"Compensation?""
"Look, if there's a misunderstanding, I'll make sure Maya gets something. Maybe twenty thousand dollars. That would be generous for a twelve-year-old's school project.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"You're offering to buy my daughter's invention for twenty thousand dollars after agreeing to pay Vanessa four hundred and fifty thousand?""
"Don't be ridiculous. The money was for the intellectual property, the development rights, and the commercial opportunity.""
"Then why wasn't Maya named in the agreement?""
Daniel didn't answer.
I ended the call.
Maya watched me.
"Is Uncle Daniel mad?""
I crouched in front of her.
"He's made some decisions that he needs to explain.""
"Did he know Mom was going to burn Nova?""
I couldn't answer immediately.
"I don't know.""
She looked down.
"I thought he liked me.""
I put my hand on her shoulder.
"He should have treated you better.""
A police cruiser pulled into the driveway.
David had advised me to document the destruction and preserve the evidence before anyone could alter it. I'd also arranged for an independent digital forensic specialist to examine Nova's memory card.
Two officers approached the house.
One introduced herself as Officer Reynolds.
"Mr. Harrison?""
"Yes.""
"We received your report concerning property damage and possible fraudulent documents.""
"That's correct.""
Vanessa appeared behind the screen door.
"Marcus, what have you done?""
Officer Reynolds looked at her.
"Ma'am, we're here to document a reported incident. We'd like to hear your account as well.""
Vanessa stepped outside.
"This is a family dispute. My husband is angry because our daughters had an argument.""
I handed Officer Reynolds photographs of Nova's remains.
"That robot belonged to my daughter. My wife and stepdaughter were involved in destroying it.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"That's not what happened.""
Officer Reynolds examined the photographs.
"Who started the fire?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"I did.""
"Why?""
"Because the girls were fighting over the machine.""
"Was it your property?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"It's a family home.""
Officer Reynolds remained calm.
"That doesn't answer the question.""
Maya stepped forward.
"I built Nova. I paid for some of her parts with my allowance. My dad bought the rest.""
The officer knelt slightly.
"Do you have any records showing your work?""
Maya nodded.
"Videos, sketches, code files, and recordings.""
"Good. Keep those safe.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
"You're seriously listening to a child?""
Officer Reynolds looked up.
"Yes, ma'am. Children can be witnesses.""
Vanessa's expression darkened.
I gave the officers the photographs and explained the memory card.
They documented the scene and asked Vanessa several questions about the fire.
She became increasingly irritated.
"This is absurd. My husband is doing this to punish me.""
Officer Reynolds wrote something in her notebook.
"That is something we'll investigate separately.""
Then my phone vibrated.
David had sent a message.
*I reviewed the acquisition photograph. The agreement contains a clause that changes everything. Call me immediately.*
I stepped away from the officers and called him.
"What did you find?""
"The document identifies Vanessa as the sole inventor and owner of Nova's technology.""
"That's impossible.""
"I know. But there's something worse.""
"What?""
"The agreement includes a warranty stating that the invention was independently developed by Vanessa and that no third party has ownership rights.""
I looked toward Maya.
"That's fraud.""
"It may be. We need the original agreement, not just a photograph.""
"Can you stop the transaction?""
"I'm already contacting the company. But Marcus, there's a second issue.""
I waited.
"Daniel's company has filed a patent application connected to the technology.""
My stomach dropped.
"When?""
"Two weeks ago.""
"Under whose name?""
"Daniel Harrison.""
I felt the ground shift beneath me.
My brother hadn't simply agreed to buy Nova.
He had already begun claiming ownership of her technology.
I looked at Maya.
She was standing beside the fire pit, carefully collecting pieces of the robot into a cardboard box.
I walked over.
"Sweetheart, we need to leave.""
She nodded.
Then she looked at the house.
"Can I say goodbye to my room?""
"Of course.""
We went inside.
Vanessa stood near the staircase, watching us.
"Where are you taking her?""
"Somewhere safe.""
"Marcus, she's my stepdaughter too.""
I stopped.
"You don't get to use that title when it suits you.""
Her face hardened.
"You can't erase the last eight years.""
"No. But you can certainly destroy them.""
Maya climbed the stairs.
I waited downstairs while she packed.
Then my phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID showed Daniel.
I answered.
"What?""
His voice was no longer cheerful.
"Marcus, I need you to listen to me.""
"I'm listening.""
"Vanessa doesn't know everything.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"She thinks this is about the robot. It isn't.""
"Then what is it about?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Your father.""
My blood ran cold.
"What about Dad?""
There was a long pause.
Then he said:
"Before he died, he left something behind. Something connected to Maya's mother.""
I stared at the staircase.
"Why are you bringing Claire into this?""
"Because the technology inside Nova isn't entirely new.""
"What?""
"Your father designed the original system years ago. Claire helped him protect it.""
I couldn't speak.
Daniel continued.
"And Marcus, if Maya really built what I think she built, then she may have accidentally uncovered something our father spent twenty years trying to keep hidden.""
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
Then Maya appeared at the top of the stairs.
She was holding a small wooden box I'd never seen before.
"Dad?""
I looked up.
"Where did you get that?""
"From Mom's office.""
She opened it.
Inside was an old photograph of my father, my late wife Claire, and Daniel.
On the back, someone had written five words.
May you like
*The original belongs to Maya.*
And beneath that sentence was my father's signature.
