Chapter 8: The Father Who Came Back From the Dead

I thought I'd misheard him.
For eleven years, I'd visited my father's grave.
I'd stood beside his headstone on birthdays and holidays. I'd taken Maya there when she was old enough to understand what death meant.
I'd told her that Grandpa loved her.
That he was watching over her.
That he would have been proud of the robot she built.
Now a detective was telling me that the man we'd buried wasn't my father.
"Detective Collins," I said slowly, "are you absolutely certain?""
"We have identification records, fingerprints, and an archived photograph.""
"Then who did we bury?""
"We're still investigating that.""
I looked at David.
He had stopped writing.
His face was pale.
"Where is my father?""
"He's currently staying at a protected residence. He has agreed to speak with you, but there's a condition.""
"What condition?""
"He wants to see Maya.""
I looked at my daughter.
She was watching me.
"Why?""
The detective paused.
"He says there's something he needs to tell her about her mother.""
I ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Maya whispered:
"Grandpa is alive?""
I nodded.
She sat down.
"Why didn't he come back?""
I didn't know.
I didn't know how to explain that the man who had supposedly died had been hiding while his granddaughter grew up without him.
David pulled out a chair.
"Marcus, before you make any decisions, we need to understand what this means legally.""
I looked at him.
"My father is alive. That's what it means.""
"Yes, but the identity issue may affect the ownership documents, the trust, and the original research.""
I looked toward the silver USB drive.
"What about the recordings?""
"We'll preserve them and have them authenticated.""
Maya slowly stood.
"I want to see Grandpa.""
I looked at her.
"Are you sure?""
She nodded.
"He knew Mom. He knew Nova. Maybe he can tell us why everyone was hiding things.""
David made the arrangements.
We met Detective Collins at a small government building outside the city.
He was a broad-shouldered man in his fifties with a tired expression and a folder tucked beneath one arm.
"Mr. Harrison.""
He shook my hand.
"Thank you for coming.""
I glanced at Maya.
"This is my daughter.""
The detective's expression softened.
"Hello, Maya.""
She nodded.
"Is my grandpa really alive?""
He looked at me before answering.
"Yes.""
He led us down a quiet hallway.
At the end was a small room with a table, four chairs, and a window overlooking the parking lot.
A man sat with his back to us.
His hair was almost entirely white.
His shoulders were thinner than I remembered.
But when he turned around, I recognized him immediately.
My father.
"Marcus.""
His voice cracked.
I couldn't move.
For eleven years, I'd believed he was gone.
Now he was sitting three feet away.
I stepped forward.
"Why?""
He lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
"Why?""
He stood slowly.
"Son—"
"Don't call me that.""
His face crumpled.
I pointed at him.
"You let me bury you.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
"You let me raise Maya believing she had lost everyone.""
His eyes filled.
"I know.""
"You let me stand beside your grave.""
He covered his mouth.
I felt anger rise so quickly that I had to grip the back of a chair.
"Do you have any idea what that did to us?""
My father looked toward Maya.
"I know I don't deserve forgiveness.""
Maya stood quietly beside me.
Then she asked:
"Why didn't you come to my birthday parties?""
My father began crying.
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
He looked at Detective Collins.
The detective nodded.
"Tell them.""
My father sat down.
"After Claire's accident, Daniel told me the police were investigating the company. He said he'd already arranged the necessary documents to protect the family.""
I stared.
"What documents?""
"Financial records. Ownership transfers. A false trail showing that I had approved the sale of the research.""
I frowned.
"Why would he do that?""
"Because I was the only person who knew the original technology belonged to a trust established for Claire's descendants.""
I looked at Maya.
My father continued.
"Daniel had been using the company's resources to develop the technology. When Claire discovered it, she threatened to expose him.""
"And the accident?""
My father closed his eyes.
"I arrived after Daniel called me. Claire was still alive.""
Maya moved closer to the table.
"Why didn't you save her?""
My father began shaking.
"I tried.""
"Mom's recording said you waited.""
He nodded.
"She asked me to protect the research first. She believed Daniel was watching the road. She was afraid he'd take Maya if he knew where the original files were.""
I stared at him.
"So you waited twenty-three minutes?""
He looked down.
"Yes.""
I felt something break inside me.
"She was your daughter-in-law.""
"I know.""
"She was the mother of your granddaughter.""
"I know.""
"And you chose a box of documents?""
My father covered his face.
"No. I chose what I thought was the only way to save Maya. But I failed Claire.""
The room fell silent.
Maya pulled a chair closer.
"Grandpa?""
He looked at her.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Did Mom know you loved her?""
His face crumpled.
"I hope she did.""
Maya reached into her bag and removed the photograph of Claire holding her as a baby.
"She left this.""
My father took it with trembling hands.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he looked at the back.
"She wrote this?""
Maya nodded.
He read the words aloud.
"Our little engineer.""
He smiled through his tears.
"She used to say you would build things that helped people.""
Maya sat down.
"That's what I wanted Nova to do.""
My father looked up sharply.
"Nova?""
I explained how Maya had built the robot and how Vanessa and Brielle had destroyed it.
His expression darkened.
"Daniel got to her.""
I frowned.
"Vanessa?""
He nodded.
"She was supposed to help protect the research. Claire trusted her.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because Vanessa worked for the company. She had access to the records and understood the legal structure.""
I felt sick.
"She married me to get access?""
My father looked away.
"I don't know when that became part of the plan.""
I stood.
"You're telling me she may have been using me from the beginning?""
"I believe she became involved because of the company. But I can't tell you what she felt later.""
I laughed bitterly.
"That's convenient.""
He lowered his head.
Detective Collins opened his folder.
"There's another reason we arranged this meeting.""
He placed a document on the table.
It was a copy of the original trust agreement.
My father's signature appeared at the bottom.
"The trust was created twenty years ago," he explained.
"It holds the rights to the original research and provides for future descendants of the creators.""
I looked at the beneficiary section.
There were two names.
Claire Harrison.
And Maya Harrison.
My daughter was listed as the primary beneficiary.
"What does that mean?""
David, who had joined us by phone, answered through the speaker.
"It means Maya may have inherited the intellectual property rights associated with the original technology.""
My father nodded.
"Your mother never wanted the invention to become a weapon. She wanted it to help people. The trust was designed to protect that purpose.""
Maya looked at the document.
"So Nova belongs to me?""
"The original rights may belong to you," my father explained.
"Your own improvements are a separate matter, and those may also be yours.""
She stared at him.
"Then why did Mom try to take her?""
My father looked down.
"Because Daniel believes the system could be worth hundreds of millions.""
I sat back.
The $450,000 agreement suddenly made more sense.
It wasn't the real value.
It was a fraction of what Daniel hoped to obtain.
Detective Collins closed the folder.
"We've also recovered additional records from the company. They suggest Daniel may have been involved in concealing evidence connected to Claire's accident.""
I looked at him.
"Are you saying my brother caused it?""
"We're investigating that possibility.""
My father leaned forward.
"There's something else.""
The detective looked at him.
"Mr. Harrison?""
My father turned toward me.
"Daniel wasn't alone that night.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Who was with him?""
My father swallowed.
"Someone who knew the original system. Someone who had access to Claire's car.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
He looked toward the door.
Before he could answer, Detective Collins's phone rang.
He stepped into the hallway.
A minute later, he returned.
His expression had changed.
"Mr. Harrison, we need to move quickly.""
"What happened?""
"Your brother has just filed an emergency motion claiming that Maya's robot was developed using stolen company property.""
I stared at him.
"He's accusing my daughter?""
"Yes.""
"And there's more," David said through the speaker.
I looked at the phone.
"What?""
"Daniel has submitted a sworn statement claiming Vanessa was never authorized to sell the technology.""
I frowned.
"He's trying to blame her.""
"Exactly.""
My father slowly stood.
"That's what he always does.""
Detective Collins looked at him.
"Can you identify the person who helped Daniel that night?""
My father nodded.
Then he looked at me.
"Yes.""
He reached into his coat and removed an old photograph.
It showed Daniel beside Claire's car.
But this time, another person was standing behind him.
A woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Vanessa.
My father pointed to her.
"She wasn't just helping Daniel after the accident.""
May you like
His voice dropped.
"She was the one who drove Claire's car away from the scene.""
