Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Fire
Nobody spoke.
Not when the old man stepped into the doorway.
Not when Alexander Hayes looked at him like he had seen the past come back to life.
Not when Noah quietly whispered:
“Grandfather.””
The word moved through the room.
Victoria looked at Alexander.
Then at the man standing in the hallway.
Then back at Alexander.
“You said he was dead.””
Alexander’s face went pale.
“I…”
He stopped.
Because there was no explanation that could survive another lie.
The old man walked slowly into the room.
He looked older than his photographs.
Older than the man Victoria had seen in Alexander’s family portraits.
But his eyes were the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
Richard Whitmore immediately stepped forward.
“Charles Hayes.””
The old man smiled.
“Richard.””
The police officers raised their attention.
One officer whispered:
“Charles Hayes? The founder?””
Victoria stared.
Alexander’s father.
The man who created the company before passing it to his son.
The man whose name appeared on every building Alexander owned.
The man everyone believed had died six years ago.
But he was standing there.
Alive.
Noah moved closer to Evelyn.
Charles noticed.
“You kept him hidden well.””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“From you.””
Charles smiled.
“You always were dramatic.””
Emma looked at Alexander.
“You knew.””
Alexander didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Victoria felt something inside her break again.
“How long?””
Alexander looked at her.
“Victoria…”
“How long did you know your father was alive?””
His silence lasted only a second.
But it was enough.
She stepped back.
“You knew.””
Alexander lowered his head.
“Yes.””
A bitter laugh escaped her.
“Of course you did.””
The police officer approached Charles.
“Sir, you need to come with us.””
Charles looked amused.
“For what?””
The officer glanced at Richard.
“For questioning regarding the Carter Foundation fire.””
Charles smiled.
“A fire from six years ago?””
He looked around.
“At a wedding?””
Then he laughed softly.
“You people have terrible timing.””
Richard’s expression didn’t change.
“You were never supposed to come back.””
Charles looked at him.
“Neither was Evelyn.””
The room became silent.
Evelyn stared.
“What did you say?””
Charles smiled.
“Did you really think Alexander hid you because he wanted you gone?””
Alexander immediately turned.
“Father.””
But Charles continued.
“You were always emotional, Alexander.””
His eyes moved to his son.
“That was your weakness.””
Victoria watched Alexander.
The fear on his face wasn’t for himself.
It was for Noah.
“Stop.””
Alexander’s voice was low.
For the first time, it sounded like a warning.
Charles ignored him.
“You tried to save everyone.””
He looked around.
“Your mother.””
“Your company.””
“Your reputation.””
Then he looked at Noah.
“Even this boy.””
Noah stepped backward.
Victoria noticed.
The child wasn’t afraid of Alexander.
He was afraid of Charles.
“Why?”” Victoria asked.
Everyone looked at her.
She faced Charles.
“Why did you do this?””
Charles smiled.
“Do what?””
“Destroy people’s lives.””
The old man tilted his head.
“You think too simply.””
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“Try me.””
Charles looked impressed.
“Alexander chose well.””
Nobody expected that.
Victoria frowned.
“What?””
Charles smiled.
“You’re stronger than I expected.””
Alexander looked at him.
“Don’t.””
But Charles continued.
“The truth is, Victoria, everything you saw today happened because of one mistake.””
He pointed at Alexander.
“My son grew a conscience.””
Alexander’s face changed.
“Enough.””
Charles ignored him.
“Six years ago, I built an empire.””
He walked farther into the room.
“Empires require sacrifices.””
Richard shook his head.
“People are not sacrifices.””
Charles looked at him.
“That’s why you never became successful.””
The words were cruel.
Cold.
Like he truly believed them.
Emma stared.
“You caused the fire.””
Charles looked at her.
“Yes.””
The admission was so casual that nobody reacted at first.
Then everyone did.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Alexander whispered:
“Why?””
Charles looked at his son.
“Because you were going to destroy everything.””
Alexander shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Charles stepped closer.
“You found the records.””
The room became quiet.
“You found the missing money.””
Alexander looked down.
“And you were going to report it.””
Richard nodded.
“Because he discovered your crimes.””
Charles smiled.
“My crimes?””
He looked around.
“Everything I built was for this family.””
Alexander’s voice became angry.
“You framed Evelyn.””
Charles looked at him.
“I protected you.””
“No.””
Alexander shook his head.
“You protected yourself.””
The words surprised everyone.
Especially Victoria.
Because this was the first time Alexander openly stood against him.
Charles noticed.
And smiled sadly.
“There he is.””
Alexander frowned.
“The son you always wanted.””
Charles shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Noah.
“The man you became.””
Noah held the recorder tightly.
Charles noticed.
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Victoria saw it.
“You’re afraid of that.””
Charles looked at her.
“I’m not afraid of anything.””
“No.””
She looked at the recorder.
“You’re afraid of what’s on there.””
For the first time, Charles didn’t have an answer.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“That recording contains the truth.””
Charles looked at her.
“The truth is always negotiable.””
Emma stared.
“How can you say that?””
Charles shrugged.
“Because people believe what they want to believe.””
He looked at Alexander.
“That’s why you became so successful.””
Alexander looked disgusted.
“No.””
Charles smiled.
“Yes.””
He pointed around the room.
“Look at them.””
“The guests.””
“The media.””
“The public.””
“They loved you because you gave them a story.””
Alexander’s voice was quiet.
“And you taught me that.””
Charles nodded.
“Exactly.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Victoria saw it.
Alexander had spent years trying to become different.
But part of his father lived inside him.
The police officer stepped forward.
“Charles Hayes, you’re under arrest.””
Charles didn’t move.
Instead, he looked at Noah.
“You have no idea what you’re holding.””
Noah looked scared.
Evelyn moved beside him.
“Don’t listen.””
Charles smiled.
“Your mother was right about one thing.””
Noah looked at him.
“She said I would try to manipulate you.””
The room went still.
Because Charles had just revealed something.
Noah’s mother.
He knew her.
Victoria looked at Alexander.
Then at Evelyn.
“Who was Noah’s mother?””
Nobody answered.
Again.
The endless secrets.
Then Charles said:
“You really never told her?””
Alexander closed his eyes.
“Father.””
Charles looked at Victoria.
“Your mother wasn’t the only person connected to this.””
Victoria’s face changed.
“What does that mean?””
Charles smiled.
“It means the fire wasn’t the first betrayal.””
He looked at Alexander.
“Tell her.””
Alexander remained silent.
Charles laughed.
“Of course you won’t.””
Victoria turned.
“Tell me what?””
Alexander looked at her.
His face showed regret.
The deepest regret she had seen.
Then he said:
“Noah’s mother…”
A pause.
“She was your sister.””
The room stopped.
Victoria stared.
“What?””
Nobody moved.
“No.””
Alexander nodded slowly.
“I didn’t know at first.””
Victoria shook her head.
“My sister died when she was young.””
“I know.””
“Don’t say you know.””
Her voice broke.
“She was never involved in any of this.””
Alexander looked away.
Charles smiled.
“She was.””
Victoria turned toward him.
“Why?””
Charles answered:
“Because your family and mine were connected long before this wedding.””
The world seemed to tilt.
Victoria looked at Noah.
The boy who had been carrying the truth.
The boy who shared Alexander’s blood.
The boy who was also connected to her family.
Then Charles said the one sentence nobody expected.
“Your sister didn’t die in an accident.””
Victoria froze.
“What?””
Charles looked directly at her.
“She died because she found out what we were hiding.””
The police moved closer.
The room became chaos.
But Victoria heard only one thing.
Her sister.
Dead.
A secret.
A lie.
Alexander stepped toward her.
“Victoria…”
She looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“You knew.””
He didn’t deny it.
“You knew about my sister.””
“I found out later.””
The answer was unbearable.
Victoria shook her head.
“Everyone knew.””
She looked around.
“Everyone except me.””
Then the recorder in Noah’s hand suddenly turned on.
Nobody had pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman’s voice.
A voice Victoria recognized immediately.
Her sister’s voice.
“If you’re hearing this…”
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
“Then they failed to erase the truth.””
Alexander stopped breathing.
Charles’s expression finally changed.
Because the voice said the words he feared most.
“I know who started the fire.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“And I know who killed me.””
