Amused

Chapter 6: The Child Behind the Secret

The birth certificate sat on the altar.

A single sheet of paper.

A simple document.

But to everyone standing inside the ballroom, it felt heavier than anything they had seen that day.

Victoria stared at the name.

Her eyes moved slowly across the page.

Then back to Alexander.

Then back to the paper.

“No…”

Her voice was barely audible.

Alexander didn’t move.

He didn’t deny it.

And somehow, that was worse.

The older man, Richard Whitmore, looked around the room.

“The child listed on this certificate is the reason the Carter Foundation fire happened.””

The guests whispered.

Phones lifted higher.

The wedding had become a courtroom.

A courtroom where the accused stood beside the woman he was supposed to marry.

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

He looked at her.

For a moment, she saw the man she loved.

The man who made coffee for her every morning.

The man who held her hand during storms because he knew she hated thunder.

Then she remembered the chest.

The lies.

The missing woman.

The prison sentence.

And the photograph.

Alexander took a breath.

“Victoria…”

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“Don’t say my name.””

He stopped.

“Just answer one question.””

She pointed toward the certificate.

“Is there a child?””

Silence.

A terrible, endless silence.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Yes.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked exhausted, but determined.

“There was.””

Victoria looked confused.

“There was?””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“The child is alive.””

A gasp moved through the ballroom.

Emma stared.

“Alive?””

Evelyn looked at Alexander.

“Yes.””

Alexander closed his eyes.

As if he had been waiting for this exact moment for six years.

Emma stepped closer.

“Who is the child?””

Nobody answered.

Victoria looked at the certificate again.

The last name was clear.

Hayes.

“Alex…”

Her voice cracked.

“Is this your child?””

The entire room waited.

Alexander looked at the floor.

And finally said:

“Yes.””

The word destroyed everything.

Victoria stepped backward.

The bouquet slipped from her fingers.

It landed on the marble floor among the scattered pieces of broken champagne glasses.

“You have a child?””

Alexander looked at her.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Her laugh was bitter.

“After the wedding?””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could defend that.

Emma watched Victoria with sadness.

She understood.

She had once believed Alexander too.

Everyone did.

That was his greatest talent.

Making people believe.

The police officer looked at Alexander.

“Who is the child?””

Alexander remained silent.

Richard Whitmore answered.

“His name is Noah.””

The name changed something.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Emma looked at her.

“You knew?””

Evelyn nodded.

“I knew where he was.””

Victoria turned.

“Where?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then said:

“With me.””

The room exploded with whispers.

Victoria stared.

“You had his child?””

Evelyn looked at Alexander.

“I protected him.””

Alexander’s face tightened.

“You were never supposed to involve him.””

Evelyn laughed quietly.

“Never supposed to involve him?””

She looked at the guests.

“He was already involved.””

Victoria looked between them.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Six years ago, I discovered Alexander had been hiding financial records.””

Alexander interrupted.

“That’s not the full story.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“It isn’t.””

She looked back at Victoria.

“Because the money wasn’t the only thing he was hiding.””

Emma asked quietly:

“Noah?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“Who was Noah’s mother?””

The question seemed to freeze him.

Evelyn looked away.

And Victoria understood.

“Oh my God.””

Her hand covered her mouth.

“No.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“Victoria, listen—”

“Was it her?””

She pointed toward Evelyn.

Alexander said nothing.

That was the answer.

The room became painfully quiet.

Emma looked at Evelyn.

“Six years ago…”

She couldn’t finish.

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“So you weren’t just hiding a child.””

She looked at Alexander.

“You were hiding her.””

Alexander tried to speak.

But Victoria continued.

“You told me your past was complicated.””

Her voice broke.

“You told me you had nothing left from before.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“But she was there.””

Alexander shook his head.

“It wasn’t like that.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

The words were calm.

But powerful.

“You abandoned your son.””

Alexander’s face changed.

“I never abandoned him.””

Evelyn stared.

“You never even looked for him.””

The silence after that was devastating.

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“Is that true?””

Alexander didn’t answer.

Again.

The silence.

Always the silence.

Richard Whitmore stepped forward.

“The reason Evelyn disappeared was because she discovered Alexander had arranged documents showing Noah didn’t exist.””

Emma frowned.

“What?””

Richard nodded.

“He erased the child from official records.””

Victoria stared.

“Why?””

Alexander finally snapped.

“Because I was protecting him!””

Everyone turned.

His voice echoed through the ballroom.

For the first time, the perfect businessman disappeared.

The angry, desperate man underneath appeared.

“I was protecting my son!””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Alexander looked at her.

“You don’t know what I was dealing with.””

“Then explain.””

His breathing became heavier.

“You think I wanted this?””

He looked around.

“You think I wanted my child dragged into a scandal?””

Richard stepped forward.

“The scandal was your actions.””

Alexander glared at him.

“You don’t know what happened.””

Richard’s expression remained cold.

“I know exactly what happened.””

He held up another document.

“The night of the fire, Alexander wasn’t destroying evidence.””

Everyone waited.

“He was destroying custody records.””

Victoria froze.

“Custody?””

Emma looked confused.

“Why?””

Richard looked at Alexander.

“Because Noah’s existence threatened his inheritance.””

The guests gasped.

Alexander’s voice became sharp.

“That’s not true.””

Richard continued.

“The child was named in a legal agreement. If Alexander’s father discovered Noah existed, the family trust would have changed.””

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“So it was money.””

Alexander shook his head.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him sadly.

“Then what was it?””

He had no answer.

Because every possible answer sounded worse.

The police officer took a step forward.

“Mr. Hayes, we need to ask you more questions.””

Alexander ignored him.

He looked at Evelyn.

“Where is Noah?””

Nobody expected the emotion in his voice.

Not anger.

Fear.

Real fear.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Why?””

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“Because he’s my son.””

She stared.

“Now?””

The question hurt.

“Now he matters?””

Alexander looked away.

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“You didn’t ask that six years ago.””

Victoria watched the exchange.

And something inside her finally broke.

She turned away from Alexander.

The man she was supposed to marry.

The man she had trusted.

The man who had built an empire from secrets.

The older man, Richard, stepped forward.

“There is one more thing.””

Everyone looked at him.

Emma sighed.

“Of course there is.””

Richard looked at Alexander.

“The fire wasn’t an accident.””

The ballroom became silent.

Alexander’s face changed.

Because this time…

he wasn’t afraid of what people would discover.

He was afraid of who would reveal it.

Richard continued.

“The person who started the fire wanted the records destroyed.””

Victoria whispered:

“Who?””

Richard looked at Alexander.

And then said:

“Not Alexander.””

A wave of confusion spread through the room.

Alexander looked up.

For the first time all day, he looked surprised.

Richard continued:

“The person who started the fire was someone Alexander was trying to protect.””

Emma frowned.

“Who?””

Richard opened the folder again.

Inside was another photograph.

A woman.

Standing outside the Carter Foundation building.

Holding a lighter.

Victoria stared.

Because she knew that face.

Everyone in the room did.

Alexander’s expression turned to horror.

“No…”

The photograph fell from Richard’s hand.

And Victoria picked it up.

Her fingers went cold.

Because the woman in the picture wasn’t Evelyn.

Wasn’t Emma.

Wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been smiling beside her only hours earlier.

Someone who had hugged her.

Someone who had helped plan the wedding.

May you like

The woman in the photograph was:

*Victoria’s own mother.*
