Chapter 5: The Guest Who Was Never Invited
The ballroom doors remained open.
Nobody dared to speak.
Not after Alexander Hayes whispered those four words.
*“She can’t be here.””*
The police officers looked confused.
The guests looked terrified.
But Victoria only looked at Alexander.
Because the fear on his face was different now.
Before, he had been afraid of the chest.
Afraid of Evelyn.
Afraid of the evidence.
But this was something else.
This was the fear of seeing a ghost.
The woman standing in the doorway slowly stepped inside.
She wasn’t wearing a prison uniform.
She wasn’t carrying anything dramatic.
She simply wore a dark blue dress, her hair pulled back, her expression calm.
Too calm.
In her hand was a small white envelope.
A wedding invitation.
The same invitation every guest had received.
Except she wasn’t supposed to be on the guest list.
A police officer turned toward Alexander.
“Do you know this woman?””
Alexander couldn’t answer.
The woman smiled faintly.
“I think he does.””
Her voice was soft.
Familiar.
Evelyn immediately looked at her.
And for the first time since she had been found alive, all the color disappeared from her face.
“No…”
Emma noticed.
“What?””
Evelyn’s eyes remained fixed on the woman.
“No, that’s impossible.””
The woman walked farther into the room.
“Hello, Evelyn.””
The entire ballroom froze.
Because Evelyn knew her.
Emma grabbed Evelyn’s hand.
“Who is she?””
Evelyn didn’t respond.
She couldn’t.
The woman stopped a few feet away.
“I’m surprised you don’t remember me.””
Evelyn stared.
“I remember you.””
Her voice shook.
“But you’re dead.””
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
Another dead person.
Another impossible secret.
Victoria looked at Alexander.
“How many people have you told me were dead?””
The question was quiet.
But it cut deeper than shouting.
Alexander looked away.
The woman glanced at him.
“You never told her about me?””
Victoria turned.
“You knew about her?””
The woman laughed softly.
“Of course he did.””
She lifted the invitation.
“He sent this to me.””
Alexander finally found his voice.
“Lena, stop.””
The name landed heavily.
Lena.
Victoria looked at him.
“You invited her?””
Alexander stepped forward.
“It’s not what you think.””
Emma shook her head.
“That’s becoming your favorite sentence.””
The police officer approached Lena.
“Ma’am, can you identify yourself?””
She looked at him.
“My name is Lena Whitmore.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
The name clearly meant something.
The officer checked his notes.
Then looked surprised.
“Lena Whitmore?””
“Yes.””
“You were listed as a witness in the Carter Foundation case.””
Lena smiled.
“Not anymore.””
The officer frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means six years ago, Alexander Hayes made sure my statement disappeared.””
The ballroom erupted again.
Victoria felt like she was trapped inside someone else’s nightmare.
Every answer created five more questions.
She looked at Alexander.
“Who are these people?””
He didn’t respond.
“Who are they?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I’ve spent two years planning this wedding with a man who apparently has an entire hidden life.””
Alexander looked at her.
“Victoria…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
The words hurt him.
She saw that.
But she didn’t care anymore.
Lena looked around the ballroom.
“At least she knows now.””
Alexander’s eyes narrowed.
“You need to leave.””
Lena smiled.
“That’s exactly what you said six years ago.””
Emma looked at her.
“Another person you tried to silence?””
Lena glanced at Emma.
“Yes.””
Then she looked at Evelyn.
“And another person who survived.””
Evelyn’s hand tightened around the blanket.
“You knew.””
Lena nodded.
“I knew.””
“You knew I was alive?””
“Yes.””
Emma looked shocked.
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Lena looked at Alexander.
“Because I was afraid.””
The room became quieter.
Even Alexander looked surprised.
Lena continued.
“Not of him.””
She paused.
“Of what he would do if he knew I was still looking.””
Victoria stared.
“You’re saying Alexander tried to hurt you?””
Lena didn’t answer directly.
Instead, she walked toward the altar.
Toward the white chest.
Everyone stepped back.
She looked down at it.
“The box.””
Emma frowned.
“What about it?””
Lena touched the side gently.
“He thought this was gone.””
Alexander’s face changed.
Victoria noticed immediately.
“What is inside that chest?””
Nobody answered.
Lena looked at him.
“You should tell her.””
Alexander’s voice was cold.
“Enough games.””
Lena laughed.
“Games?””
She turned around.
“You built your entire life on one.””
The police officers watched carefully.
Lena pointed toward the chest.
“This isn’t where Evelyn was supposed to be found.””
Victoria’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Lena continued.
“The chest was created as part of the investigation.””
Emma frowned.
“Created?””
Lena nodded.
“Evelyn hid something inside it before the fire.””
Evelyn looked down.
“I didn’t know if I would survive.””
The room went still.
Emma squeezed her hand.
“You knew.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I knew someone was coming for me.””
Her eyes moved to Alexander.
“I just didn’t know how far he would go.””
Alexander shook his head.
“I never wanted anyone hurt.””
Lena looked at him.
“That’s the lie you tell yourself.””
Victoria watched Alexander carefully.
She had spent years admiring his ability to stay calm.
Now she realized something terrifying.
He was not calm.
He was controlling himself.
Every word.
Every movement.
Every reaction.
Because he had been doing it for years.
The police officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Hayes, we need that memory card.””
Evelyn held it tighter.
“I’ll give it.””
Alexander looked at her.
“Evelyn.””
She ignored him.
“But only after everyone hears the truth.””
The officer nodded.
“That’s your choice.””
Lena walked closer.
“I can help with that.””
Emma looked at her.
“How?””
Lena reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small recorder.
The old kind.
The kind nobody used anymore.
Alexander’s face changed.
Again.
Emma noticed.
“You know that?””
He said nothing.
Lena pressed a button.
A voice immediately filled the ballroom.
Alexander’s voice.
Six years younger.
Angry.
Afraid.
“Do you understand what happens if those files get out?””
The recording continued.
A woman’s voice answered.
Evelyn.
“You can’t stop the truth forever.””
Alexander’s recorded voice became colder.
“You don’t know what you’re risking.””
Then a loud crash.
A scream.
And the recording ended.
The ballroom was silent.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Because she recognized Alexander’s voice.
Even from six years ago.
Lena turned off the recorder.
“That was the last conversation before the fire.””
Alexander stared at her.
“Where did you get that?””
Lena smiled.
“From the person you forgot existed.””
Nobody moved.
Victoria whispered:
“Who?””
Lena looked toward the ballroom entrance.
The same entrance where she had appeared.
Then she said:
“The person who actually started this investigation.””
The guests turned.
Another figure stood outside.
An older man.
Gray hair.
Holding a folder.
The police officers immediately recognized him.
One of them stepped forward.
“Mr. Whitmore?””
Lena looked at him.
“Yes.””
Victoria frowned.
“Your father?””
Lena nodded.
“He was the original investigator.””
Alexander’s face became completely empty.
Because this was the one person he could never manipulate.
The one person who had spent six years collecting every missing piece.
The older man walked into the ballroom.
His eyes locked onto Alexander.
“I told you one day the truth would reach you.””
Alexander whispered:
“You should have stayed away.””
The old man smiled sadly.
“I tried.””
He held up the folder.
“But then I found the last document.””
Emma looked at the folder.
“What document?””
The man opened it.
Inside was a single page.
A birth certificate.
Victoria stared.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
The old man looked at Alexander.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at Emma.
And finally said:
“The fire wasn’t about money.””
Everyone waited.
“It was about a child.””
The room went silent.
Alexander’s expression broke.
Because he knew what was coming.
The old man placed the document on the altar.
And Victoria saw the name written at the top.
Her heart stopped.
May you like
Because the child listed on the certificate had the last name:
*Hayes.*
