Chapter 7: The Mother’s Hidden Deal
Victoria stopped breathing.
The photograph slipped from her fingers.
It landed face down on the marble floor, but everyone had already seen enough.
Everyone had already understood.
Her mother.
The woman who had helped choose the flowers.
The woman who had hugged Alexander before the ceremony.
The woman who had whispered that Victoria was “finally marrying a good man.””
A woman who was now connected to the worst night of Alexander Hayes’s life.
“No.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Richard Whitmore watched her carefully.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked at him.
“You’re wrong.””
Her voice became louder.
“You have the wrong person.””
Richard didn’t argue.
He simply picked up the photograph.
“This was taken outside the Carter Foundation archive six years ago.””
Victoria stared.
“My mother was nowhere near that building.””
Nobody answered.
And that silence made her panic.
She turned toward Alexander.
“Tell them.””
He looked at her.
“Victoria…”
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“Tell them my mother had nothing to do with this.””
Alexander looked away.
And that was when she knew.
The pain on her face changed.
Not because her mother was involved.
Because Alexander knew.
“You knew.””
The words were barely a whisper.
“You knew about my mother.””
Alexander swallowed.
“I found out later.””
Victoria laughed once.
A broken sound.
“Later?””
She pointed toward the room.
“You knew all of this, and you still invited my family here?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
The sentence came out automatically.
Emma immediately shook her head.
“There it is again.””
Alexander looked at her.
Emma’s eyes were cold.
“Every terrible thing you do becomes protection.””
The guests watched silently.
The image of Alexander Hayes as a perfect man was disappearing piece by piece.
Victoria looked at Evelyn.
“You knew too?””
Evelyn looked down.
“Yes.””
Victoria’s eyes filled with disbelief.
“You knew my mother was involved?””
“Not at first.””
Evelyn looked at Alexander.
“I discovered it when I found the missing files.””
Victoria stepped back.
“And nobody told me?””
No one answered.
That hurt more than anything.
She had spent years believing she was surrounded by people who loved her.
But everyone had been carrying pieces of a truth she was never allowed to see.
A police officer approached.
“Mrs. Langford?””
Victoria looked at him.
“I’m not married.””
The officer paused.
“Miss Langford.””
He nodded.
“We need to ask questions.””
She looked around the ballroom.
The wedding decorations suddenly felt ridiculous.
The flowers.
The music.
The expensive dress.
Everything built for a future that had already collapsed.
“Fine.””
Her voice was empty.
“Ask.””
The officer turned toward Richard.
“Explain the connection.””
Richard opened the folder.
“Six years ago, the Carter Foundation was preparing to expose a financial fraud network.””
Emma nodded.
“The one Alexander was connected to.””
Alexander immediately interrupted.
“I wasn’t part of it.””
Richard looked at him.
“No?””
He placed another document on the altar.
“Then explain this.””
Alexander stared at the paper.
Victoria moved closer.
“What is it?””
Richard answered.
“An agreement between Alexander Hayes and Victoria’s mother, Margaret Langford.””
Victoria froze.
Her mother’s name sounded strange in this room.
Like it belonged to someone else.
“What kind of agreement?””
Richard looked at Alexander.
“You tell them.””
Alexander remained silent.
Victoria’s voice became sharp.
“Tell me.””
Finally, Alexander spoke.
“Your mother helped me.””
The room went quiet.
Victoria stared.
“With what?””
He looked exhausted.
“With the investigation.””
Emma frowned.
“That’s not what you told us.””
Alexander looked at her.
“Because it’s complicated.””
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“It’s simple.””
She pointed toward the documents.
“You made a deal.””
Alexander didn’t deny it.
Victoria’s voice trembled.
“What deal?””
Alexander looked at her.
“Your mother knew about the financial records.””
“Why?””
“Because she was involved with the foundation.””
Victoria shook her head.
“My mother was a donor.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Alexander hesitated.
Richard answered.
“She was more than a donor.””
Victoria looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Richard placed another photograph on the table.
This one showed Margaret Langford entering the Carter Foundation building.
Beside her was Alexander.
But there was something else.
A third person.
A man Victoria didn’t recognize.
“Who is that?””
Richard looked at the photo.
“That is Daniel Voss.””
Alexander’s expression changed.
Emma noticed.
“You know him.””
Alexander looked away.
Richard continued.
“Daniel Voss was the person controlling the financial transfers.””
Victoria looked confused.
“Then why is my mother with him?””
Nobody answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“Because your mother wasn’t trying to destroy the foundation.””
Everyone turned toward her.
“She was trying to save herself.””
Victoria stared.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn took a slow breath.
“It means Margaret Langford knew she was going to be exposed.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
“She made a deal with Alexander.””
Alexander looked at Evelyn.
“Stop.””
But Evelyn continued.
“She promised to help him hide the evidence.””
Victoria looked at Alexander.
“And what did you give her?””
Alexander said nothing.
Evelyn answered.
“Protection.””
The word echoed.
Victoria felt sick.
“My mother protected you?””
“Yes.””
“And you protected her?””
Evelyn nodded.
“For years.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
Everything suddenly connected.
The wedding.
The families.
The perfect partnership.
The reason Alexander and her mother had always gotten along.
It wasn’t because they loved the same things.
It was because they shared the same secret.
A loud crash came from the side of the room.
Everyone turned.
One of the guests had dropped his glass.
Nobody noticed.
Everyone was too focused on Alexander.
Except Victoria.
She noticed something else.
The old photograph.
The one of her mother outside the burning building.
There was something written on the back.
She picked it up.
Her hands shook.
“What is this?””
Alexander immediately looked up.
“Victoria, don’t.””
That reaction told her everything.
She turned the photograph over.
On the back was a handwritten note.
Four words.
*He knows about Noah.*
Victoria looked at Alexander.
“What does this mean?””
His face went pale.
Richard stepped forward.
“Your mother discovered the child.””
Victoria stared.
“My mother knew about Noah?””
“Yes.””
“Why would that matter?””
Richard looked at Alexander.
“Because Noah wasn’t just a child.””
Nobody understood.
Until Evelyn spoke.
“He was a witness.””
Emma frowned.
“A witness to what?””
Evelyn looked at Alexander.
“The night of the fire.””
Alexander’s expression changed.
Victoria looked at him.
“Noah was there?””
Silence.
Then Alexander whispered:
“Yes.””
The room froze.
Victoria’s voice cracked.
“A child saw what happened?””
Alexander closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“And you hid him?””
“I was trying to keep him safe.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You were trying to control the only person who knew the truth.””
Alexander looked at her.
“That’s not fair.””
“No?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with anger.
“Then tell them what Noah saw.””
Alexander said nothing.
Victoria stepped closer.
“What did he see?””
The police officers waited.
The guests waited.
Everyone waited.
Alexander looked at the floor.
Then slowly said:
“He saw the person who started the fire.””
Victoria whispered:
“Who?””
Alexander looked toward the photograph of her mother.
And for the first time…
he looked afraid of someone other than himself.
“Your mother wasn’t the one who lit the match.””
Everyone held their breath.
Victoria stared.
“Then who was?””
Alexander looked at the ballroom entrance.
Because suddenly he realized something.
The one person who knew the answer…
was missing.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
He checked the screen.
His face turned white.
Victoria saw the name.
A name she had never heard before.
A name that made Alexander whisper:
“Noah.””
He answered.
Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.
But they could hear Alexander’s response.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“Don’t move.””
Another pause.
Alexander’s eyes lifted.
And everyone saw the terror.
Because whoever was holding the phone…
was not Noah.
Alexander slowly lowered the phone.
Victoria asked:
“What happened?””
He looked at her.
May you like
And whispered:
“Someone found him first.””
