Amused

Chapter 2: The Name Inside the Box

The name carved into the white chest was not supposed to exist.

Not in that ballroom.

Not on that day.

Not in front of three hundred guests who had gathered to celebrate Alexander Hayes’s perfect future.

But there it was.

Seven letters burned into the polished wood.

*EVELYN.*

Victoria stared at it.

Her fingers tightened around her bouquet until the stems bent.

“Who is Evelyn?”” she asked.

Her voice was quiet.

Almost too quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Because the entire ballroom had become a place where nobody wanted to breathe.

Alexander didn’t answer.

That was the first thing Victoria noticed.

Not his shock.

Not Emma’s prison uniform.

Not the locked chest.

The silence.

A person could deny anything.

But silence always admitted something.

“Alex,” Victoria said again.

This time, there was no affection in her voice.

“Who is Evelyn?””

Alexander looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the cameras some people had secretly started recording.

At the security guards waiting for instructions.

Then his eyes returned to the chest.

“Emma,” he said slowly.

“You need to understand what you’re doing.””

Emma stood beside the chest, her hands shaking.

“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

“You’re destroying lives.””

A painful smile appeared on her face.

“No.””

She looked at Victoria.

“I’m finally giving someone the truth.””

Victoria’s eyes moved between them.

“Someone?””

Emma looked at her.

“Yes.””

The bride swallowed.

“Me?””

Emma didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

Victoria took a step back.

Alexander immediately moved toward her.

“Victoria, don’t listen to her.””

The words came too quickly.

Too desperately.

Emma noticed.

“So you’re still protecting yourself.””

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Emma pointed toward the chest.

“You had six years to say her name.””

The guests exchanged confused looks.

A man near the back whispered, “Who is Evelyn?””

Nobody knew.

But everyone wanted to.

Alexander lowered his voice.

“Emma, this isn’t the place.””

Emma laughed softly.

“That’s exactly what you said six years ago.””

The words hung in the air.

Victoria turned sharply.

“Six years ago?””

Alexander didn’t respond.

Her face changed.

Because she remembered.

Six years ago was the year before they met.

The year Alexander told her he had been rebuilding his life.

The year he said he had left behind “complicated things.””

She had believed him.

Everyone had.

Because Alexander Hayes was the kind of man people wanted to believe.

He shook hands with presidents.

He appeared on magazine covers.

He funded hospitals and scholarships.

People called him a man who had everything.

But Victoria suddenly wondered what he had left behind to get there.

“Open the chest,” Emma said.

Alexander looked at her.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Emma nodded slowly.

“Exactly.””

She turned to the crowd.

“He doesn’t want you to see.””

A guest shouted from the audience.

“Someone tell us what is going on!””

Another voice followed.

“Is this some kind of stunt?””

Emma looked toward the guests.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“This is not a performance.””

She placed one hand against the chest.

“This is a confession.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“Emma, you’re confused.””

Her eyes flashed.

“Confused?””

She pointed at her prison uniform.

“You think I spent three years wearing this because I was confused?””

Nobody spoke.

Emma looked down at her sleeves.

The orange fabric suddenly seemed heavier.

“I lost my job.””

She touched the sleeve.

“I lost my apartment.””

Her voice became smaller.

“I lost everyone who believed me.””

Then she looked at Alexander.

“But you lost nothing.””

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not true.””

Emma stared at him.

“You walked into court wearing a suit.””

She stepped closer.

“You had lawyers sitting beside you.””

Another step.

“You had newspapers calling you a victim.””

Her voice trembled.

“And I had a number on my chest.””

The ballroom remained silent.

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“Court?””

He looked away.

“Victoria—”

“No.””

She raised her hand.

“No more half answers.””

Her eyes filled with anger and confusion.

“Was she telling the truth?””

Alexander opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Emma whispered:

“That’s what I thought.””

Then she reached into her pocket again.

She pulled out a small key.

A gasp moved through the room.

The key was old.

Silver.

Attached to a thin black string.

Alexander’s face changed the moment he saw it.

Not fear this time.

Recognition.

“Where did you get that?”” he asked.

Emma looked at him.

“From the one person you couldn’t silence.””

Victoria’s eyebrows drew together.

“What does that mean?””

Emma walked back to the chest.

“The lock isn’t the important part.””

She held up the key.

“The important part is who gave this to me.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“Emma.””

For the first time, his voice sounded desperate.

“Don’t do this.””

Emma looked at him.

“Why?””

She tilted her head.

“Because Evelyn asked me to?””

The name hit him like a weapon.

Alexander stopped moving.

Victoria noticed.

“Evelyn knew you?””

Emma nodded.

“Yes.””

The bride looked at the chest.

“Who was she?””

Emma lowered her eyes.

For a moment, all the anger disappeared.

Only sadness remained.

“She was my best friend.””

A quiet murmur spread through the room.

Emma continued.

“And she was the reason I found out what Alexander really was.””

Alexander shook his head.

“No.””

Emma looked back at him.

“You don’t get to rewrite her story.””

Victoria’s voice was barely audible.

“What happened to her?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was worse than any confession.

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“What happened to Evelyn?””

Alexander’s face was frozen.

Emma slowly placed the key into the lock.

The entire room watched.

The key turned halfway.

Then stopped.

Emma frowned.

“No…”

Her hand began shaking.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Alexander suddenly exhaled.

Almost relieved.

“It’s not going to open.””

Emma stared at the lock.

“What did you do?””

Alexander didn’t answer.

Victoria looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Still nothing.

Emma grabbed the chest handle.

“He changed it.””

The guests looked confused.

“What?””

Emma looked at Alexander.

“You changed the lock.””

Alexander’s expression remained blank.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“No.””

She looked at the chest.

Then back at him.

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

She reached into her pocket and pulled out another object.

A small metal tag.

The same symbol engraved on the chest.

Victoria noticed it.

“Where did you get that?””

Emma looked at her.

“From Evelyn.””

The bride’s face went pale.

“But you said she was your best friend.””

“She was.””

Emma’s voice softened.

“She was also Alexander’s biggest mistake.””

The words caused a wave of whispers.

Alexander suddenly moved toward her.

“Give me that.””

Two security guards immediately stepped between them.

The guests gasped.

Because the millionaire groom had just tried to take something from a woman in a prison uniform.

Victoria stared at him.

“Alex…”

He stopped.

Realizing everyone had seen.

Emma looked at him sadly.

“You’re scared.””

Alexander said nothing.

She turned back to the chest.

“Because you know what’s inside.””

A phone suddenly rang.

The sound cut through the silence.

Everyone looked around.

It wasn’t a guest’s phone.

It was coming from the chest.

Emma froze.

Her face drained of color.

“No…”

Victoria looked at the white box.

“What is that?””

The ringing continued.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Alexander stepped backward.

Impossible.

That was the only word written across his face.

Emma reached toward the chest.

Her hand trembled.

“It shouldn’t be ringing.””

The fourth ring echoed through the ballroom.

The guests stood frozen.

Victoria whispered:

“Alex…”

The groom didn’t look at her.

He was staring at the chest like it had come back from the dead.

Then the lock clicked.

By itself.

The lid moved slightly.

And from inside the white chest, a woman’s voice whispered:

“Alexander…”

Everyone heard it.

Everyone.

The voice was weak.

Frightened.

But unmistakably alive.

Emma covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Because she recognized the voice immediately.

And Alexander Hayes finally understood one terrible truth.

May you like

The secret he had buried for six years…

was still breathing.
