Amused

Chapter 4: The Lie That Built a Fortune

The photograph trembled in Victoria’s hands.

Not because it was heavy.

Because it was impossible.

She stared at the image again.

Then again.

The man standing beside the burning building was unmistakable.

The same dark hair.

The same sharp jawline.

The same expensive watch she had bought Alexander for his thirty-fifth birthday.

Her husband-to-be.

The man she thought she knew better than anyone.

“No…”

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Alexander took a step toward her.

“Victoria, listen to me.””

She looked up.

The expression on her face stopped him.

It wasn’t anger.

Not yet.

It was the look of someone watching the entire world they trusted collapse.

“You told me you met with investors that night.””

Alexander’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

“You told me you were in another city.””

Still nothing.

“You told me you had never heard of the Carter Foundation.””

Victoria looked at the photo again.

“Was any of it true?””

The ballroom watched silently.

Three hundred guests.

A wedding orchestra.

A giant white chest.

And a bride discovering that her future husband’s greatest secret had been hidden behind a perfect smile.

Alexander finally spoke.

“Victoria, there is an explanation.””

Emma let out a quiet laugh.

A painful one.

“There’s always an explanation.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Emma, stay out of this.””

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

Evelyn, still lying on the stretcher, watched him carefully.

“You spent six years making sure nobody heard my side.””

Alexander’s expression tightened.

“I was protecting people.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was weak.

“But it was enough.””

The stranger in the dark suit stepped forward.

“Mr. Hayes, we need to discuss this privately.””

Victoria immediately turned.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her hand was still holding the photograph.

“No more private conversations.””

Her voice became stronger.

“Not after today.””

The man hesitated.

Alexander looked around the room.

He saw the guests.

The phones recording.

The reporters who had been invited to cover the wedding.

His perfect image was breaking apart in real time.

Emma noticed.

“You’re not scared of the truth.””

She pointed at the cameras.

“You’re scared everyone will finally see it.””

Alexander’s eyes hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Emma stared at him.

“I spent three years in prison because of what you did.””

The ballroom went quiet again.

Victoria slowly turned.

“What did he do?””

Emma looked at Alexander.

Then at Evelyn.

Then back at Victoria.

“He let them believe I caused the fire.””

Victoria frowned.

“Wait.””

Her eyes moved between them.

“You were arrested for the fire?””

Emma nodded.

“Yes.””

“But why?””

The question hung there.

Emma’s expression changed.

Because the answer was worse than anyone expected.

“Because Alexander needed someone to blame.””

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Alexander immediately shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Emma looked at him.

“Then tell them.””

Silence.

“Tell them why your fingerprints were on the archive door.””

Alexander froze.

Victoria looked at him.

His reaction answered before his words could.

“You were there.””

Alexander looked away.

Victoria’s face changed.

“You were there.””

Again.

This time louder.

Alexander finally snapped.

“Yes!””

The entire ballroom jumped.

He took a breath.

“Yes, I was there.””

Victoria stared.

“Why?””

Alexander looked toward the floor.

For the first time, he didn’t look like a powerful businessman.

He looked like someone trapped.

“I went there because I was trying to fix a mistake.””

Emma shook her head.

“A mistake?””

Her voice rose.

“You mean a crime.””

Alexander looked at her.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell us.””

Emma pointed around the room.

“Right now.””

Alexander said nothing.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Who was Evelyn to you?””

Evelyn looked away.

That small movement caught Victoria’s attention.

“You knew each other.””

Nobody answered.

Victoria’s voice became colder.

“You knew each other before me.””

Alexander closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission landed harder than she expected.

“How?””

A long pause.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“I worked for him.””

Victoria looked at her.

“You worked for Alexander?””

Evelyn nodded.

“I was the financial director of Hayes Enterprises.””

The guests reacted.

Because everyone knew Hayes Enterprises.

The company that made Alexander famous.

The company built on innovation, technology, and investments.

The company everyone thought represented his genius.

Evelyn continued.

“I discovered money was disappearing.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Stop.””

She ignored him.

“Millions.””

A few guests gasped.

“Transferred through fake accounts.””

The stranger in the suit immediately stepped forward.

“That allegation is unproven.””

Emma looked at him.

“Funny.””

She smiled without humor.

“That’s exactly what you said six years ago.””

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“Did you steal from your own company?””

Alexander’s face tightened.

“No.””

Evelyn answered.

“But he knew who did.””

The room became silent.

Victoria looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at Alexander.

“You weren’t the only person involved.””

Alexander’s eyes flashed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Emma noticed.

“You still haven’t told her.””

Victoria looked between them.

“Told me what?””

Alexander didn’t answer.

Emma stepped closer.

“The reason he destroyed the evidence.””

Alexander’s voice became sharp.

“Enough.””

But Emma continued.

“The reason Evelyn disappeared.””

Victoria’s breath caught.

“Disappeared?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I wasn’t supposed to survive.””

The words were quiet.

But they hit the room like thunder.

Victoria looked at her.

“What?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“That night, I went to the archive because I had proof.””

She looked at Alexander.

“Proof that could expose everyone.””

Emma nodded.

“She called me before she went inside.””

Alexander shook his head.

“No.””

Emma looked at him.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She told me she was going to meet someone.””

Victoria asked:

“Who?””

Emma answered without hesitation.

“You.””

Everyone looked at Alexander.

The groom stood completely still.

Victoria whispered:

“You met her that night?””

Alexander didn’t deny it.

And somehow that was the worst answer.

Victoria stepped back.

“How could you?””

Alexander looked at her.

“Victoria—”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You let me stand here.””

She looked around at the flowers.

The decorations.

The guests.

“You let me promise my future to you.””

Her voice broke.

“Knowing this?””

Alexander moved toward her.

“Please let me explain.””

Victoria laughed sadly.

“Explain what?””

She held up the photograph.

“This?””

She pointed at Evelyn.

“Her?””

Then at the chest.

“Whatever else you buried?””

Alexander’s expression changed.

Because she said the word.

Buried.

And everyone heard it.

Evelyn slowly reached into the blanket wrapped around her.

Her fingers found something hidden inside.

A small black memory card.

Emma immediately recognized it.

“Evelyn…”

Evelyn looked at her.

“I kept it.””

Alexander went completely still.

The stranger beside him whispered:

“No.””

Evelyn held the memory card tightly.

“The original files.””

Emma stared.

“The ones from the archive?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Victoria looked at Alexander.

“What’s on it?””

Nobody answered.

But Alexander’s face did.

He knew.

He knew exactly what was on it.

The stranger suddenly reached forward.

“Give me that.””

Security immediately stepped between them.

Evelyn pulled the card closer.

“No.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Evelyn, you don’t understand.””

She smiled faintly.

“I understand everything now.””

Then she looked at Victoria.

“I’m sorry you had to find out like this.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at Alexander.

“Because six years ago, he didn’t just destroy evidence.””

She paused.

“He destroyed a person.””

Alexander whispered:

“Don’t.””

Evelyn continued.

“He made everyone believe I was dead.””

The ballroom doors suddenly opened.

This time, it wasn’t security.

It was the police.

Several officers entered.

The guests erupted in panic again.

One officer walked forward.

“Alexander Hayes?””

Alexander looked at him.

“Yes?””

The officer pulled out a document.

“We have a warrant.””

Victoria froze.

“For what?””

The officer looked at Alexander.

“For the reopened investigation into the Carter Foundation fire.””

Nobody moved.

The officer continued.

“And for evidence connected to the disappearance of Evelyn Carter.””

Alexander stared at the warrant.

Then at Evelyn.

Then at Emma.

And finally at Victoria.

Because he knew something they didn’t.

The investigation wasn’t the only thing coming back.

Someone else was too.

Someone who knew the real reason the fire started.

And before the officer could take another step, Alexander whispered:

“She can’t be here.””

Victoria frowned.

“Who?””

Alexander looked toward the ballroom entrance.

His face turned completely white.

May you like

Because standing in the doorway was the one person he believed had died with the truth.

And she was holding a wedding invitation with his name on it.
