Amused

Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Never Buried

The voice from below made every person in the hallway freeze.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound was the rain hitting the old apartment windows.

Then Richard whispered a name.

A name filled with fear.

“Victor.””

I looked at him.

“Who is Victor?””

Richard didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The expression on his face told me enough.

Victor was the missing piece.

The person everyone had been afraid to mention.

Margaret stepped closer to the wall.

Her confidence was gone.

For the first time since I met her, she looked genuinely afraid.

“Charles,” she said quietly.

“Stay behind me.””

I almost laughed.

After everything that happened, after thirty years of lies and secrets, she wanted to protect me?

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

I looked at Lily.

“I spent my whole life believing I lost everyone because of one tragedy.””

My voice became harder.

“But now I know the tragedy was planned.””

The footsteps below continued.

Slow.

Calm.

Like whoever was coming had no reason to hurry.

They knew they were in control.

Richard moved toward the stairs.

I stopped him.

“Where are you going?””

“To delay him.””

“No.””

“Charles—”

“No more people sacrificing themselves while I stand in the dark.””

Richard looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the young man he used to be.

The friend who stood beside me before everything changed.

Then he nodded.

“You really are like Amelia.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“She never ran either.””

The door downstairs opened.

A voice echoed.

“Charles.””

Everyone went silent.

Then a man appeared at the top of the stairs.

He was older.

Much older.

His hair was completely gray.

His face carried decades of secrets.

But his eyes were sharp.

Cold.

Familiar.

I had never seen him before.

Yet somehow, I felt like I had spent my whole life surrounded by him.

He looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then smiled.

“Edward was right.””

My body froze.

“Don’t say his name.””

The man smiled.

“You have his anger.””

My fists tightened.

“Who are you?””

The man slowly walked forward.

“Victor Vale.””

Margaret’s brother.

The person behind everything.

The person who had been hiding in the shadows for thirty years.

I stared at him.

“You knew my father.””

Victor smiled.

“I knew him better than anyone.””

“Where is he?””

Victor tilted his head.

“You still think this is about finding him.””

“Answer me.””

“He’s closer than you think.””

My anger exploded.

“Enough.””

I stepped forward.

“You destroyed my family.””

Victor looked almost disappointed.

“No, Charles.””

He pointed around the room.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You manipulated Thomas.””

Victor smiled.

“Thomas was easy.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“He was your brother.””

“And that was his weakness.””

Victor spoke calmly.

“He spent his entire life believing you were given everything he deserved.””

I looked away.

Because that part was true.

Thomas had always carried resentment.

Victor saw it.

And used it.

“You poisoned his mind.””

Victor shrugged.

“I showed him what was already there.””

Margaret’s voice cut through.

“Victor, stop.””

He looked at her.

“You still think you can save them?””

She stared at him.

“You ruined everything.””

Victor laughed softly.

“That’s what you believe?””

He turned toward me.

“Charles, your father was not a victim.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Edward Whitmore built an empire by destroying people who stood in his way.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You worshiped him.””

Victor’s voice became sharper.

“You never questioned him.””

I remembered my father.

His strict rules.

His obsession with winning.

His belief that weakness was dangerous.

But also his kindness.

His lessons.

His sacrifices.

“You’re lying.””

Victor smiled.

“Amelia thought the same thing.””

The room became quiet.

I looked at him.

“What did Amelia discover?””

Victor walked closer.

“She discovered Edward had been investigating me.””

Richard interrupted.

“Because Edward found out what you were doing.””

Victor looked at him.

“Careful.””

Richard didn’t move.

“You destroyed innocent lives.””

Victor laughed.

“Innocent?””

He looked at me.

“Everyone in this room has blood on their hands.””

I looked at Lily.

She was frightened.

I stepped between them.

“Leave her out of this.””

Victor looked at Lily.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Not fear.

Something like regret.

“Amelia should have listened.””

My heart stopped.

“You knew my mother?””

Lily asked quietly.

Victor looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Did you hurt her?””

A long silence followed.

Victor looked away.

And that was the first honest reaction I saw from him.

“I hurt everyone.””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

I felt anger rising.

But before I could speak, Victor reached into his coat.

Everyone tensed.

He pulled out a small object.

A photograph.

He handed it to me.

I didn’t want to take it.

But I did.

The moment I saw it, my entire world changed.

My father.

Alive.

Standing outside a cabin.

And beside him…

Amelia.

They were older.

Different.

But unmistakably alive.

The back of the photograph had a date.

Two years earlier.

My hands shook.

“No.””

Victor watched me.

“Your father lived.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t he come back?””

Victor’s face became serious.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“You.””

The answer felt like a knife.

“Me?””

Victor nodded.

“He believed if he returned, everyone around him would die.””

Richard looked confused.

“That makes no sense.””

Victor looked at him.

“Doesn’t it?””

He turned back to me.

“Edward knew someone inside his own family had betrayed him.””

I looked at Richard.

Then Margaret.

Then Lily.

“Who?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“The person who convinced everyone Edward was dead.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

The funeral.

The doctors.

The paperwork.

The death certificate.

Someone had arranged everything.

Someone had access.

Someone close.

“Who signed the documents?”” I whispered.

Richard’s face changed.

“What?””

“My father’s death certificate.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Margaret.

“You know.””

She looked away.

That was enough.

“Who?””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Thomas.””

My heart sank.

My brother.

Again.

But this time, something felt different.

Because if Thomas had helped fake my father’s death…

Maybe he wasn’t the mastermind.

Maybe he was another victim.

Victor stepped closer.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“Understand what?””

“That Thomas wasn’t trying to destroy your family.””

He paused.

“He was trying to save it.””

The room went silent.

My entire view of the past began collapsing.

Thomas.

Amelia.

My father.

Everything I believed was changing.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Victor smiled.

“Answer it.””

I didn’t move.

“Who is it?””

Victor’s expression softened.

“Someone you have been waiting thirty years to hear.””

My hand slowly lifted the phone.

I pressed answer.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a breath.

A familiar breath.

A sound I had dreamed about for decades.

Then a woman whispered:

“Charles?””

My knees almost gave out.

I couldn’t speak.

Because no matter how old I was…

No matter how much pain I had carried…

I knew that voice.

“Amelia?””

A quiet sob came through the phone.

“Yes.””

My eyes closed.

The world stopped.

After thirty years.

After all the lies.

After all the searching.

She was there.

Alive.

Then her voice changed.

She sounded afraid.

“Charles, listen to me.””

I held the phone tighter.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Lily is not the only thing they were trying to protect.””

I looked at the child beside me.

“What do you mean?””

Amelia’s voice broke.

“Your father left something behind.””

I looked at Victor.

At Richard.

At Margaret.

Everyone was watching me.

“What?””

The answer came softly.

“The reason they wanted Edward gone…”

A pause.

“…is because he discovered who was really controlling everything.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

Amelia went silent.

Then she said the words that shattered the last piece of my certainty.

“Charles…”

Her voice trembled.

“The person you have been trusting all these years…”

The call suddenly crackled.

May you like

Then her final words came through.

“…is not the person you think.””
