Chapter 5: The Daughter They Tried To Hide
Richard Hayes stood in the doorway like a man who had spent thirty years running from a ghost.
But now the ghost was standing in front of him.
Not Amelia.
Her daughter.
Lily pressed herself closer to me.
I could feel her fear.
And I understood it.
Because I felt it too.
The man I once trusted more than anyone was looking at a child like he had seen something impossible.
Something dangerous.
I stepped forward.
“Richard, explain.””
His eyes moved from Lily to the hallway behind him.
Then back to me.
“Not here.””
My anger rose.
“You show up at midnight, tell me to run, and then expect me to follow orders?””
“Charles—”
“No.””
My voice echoed through the old apartment.
“For thirty years, I believed Amelia abandoned me. For thirty years, I searched for answers while you stood beside me pretending you knew nothing.””
Richard looked down.
And that small movement told me more than words.
He was guilty.
Or he was carrying a guilt he couldn’t escape.
“Did you know she was alive?”” I asked.
Silence.
“Richard.””
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
The word landed like a physical blow.
Lily covered her mouth.
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
He closed his eyes.
“I knew she was alive when she disappeared.””
The room went completely still.
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted answers.
I wanted the thirty years I lost returned to me.
“How could you?””
My voice cracked.
“How could you let me mourn someone who was still breathing?””
Richard looked at me with tired eyes.
“Because Amelia made me promise.””
“Don’t say her name like you have the right.””
He flinched.
For a moment, the confident businessman I knew disappeared.
Only an old, broken man remained.
“I deserved that,” he whispered.
Lily looked between us.
“Did you know my mother?””
Richard looked at her.
His expression changed instantly.
Not fear.
Pain.
“Yes.””
“How?””
He swallowed.
“Because I helped her survive.””
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me everything.””
Richard glanced toward the door.
“They’re already searching.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
“Richard.””
His voice dropped.
“The people who destroyed Amelia’s life.””
I held up the metal box.
“Were they the ones who hid this?””
Richard looked at it.
His face changed.
“You found it.””
“Yes.””
“That means they know.””
“Know what?””
He looked at Lily.
“That Amelia’s secret is no longer a secret.””
Lily’s eyes filled with confusion.
“What secret?””
Richard looked like he wanted to answer.
But he hesitated.
I noticed.
“Richard.””
He sighed.
“Before I tell you, we need to leave.””
“No.””
“Charles—”
“No more running.””
I pointed toward Lily.
“She has spent her entire life running. Amelia spent thirty years hiding. I spent thirty years believing a lie.””
My voice lowered.
“I’m done running.””
Richard stared at me.
Then slowly nodded.
“You sound exactly like Amelia.””
The words hurt.
Because I missed hearing them.
He stepped inside and closed the door.
“Listen carefully.””
We gathered around the small table.
Richard looked at Lily.
“Your mother was never just a witness.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means she discovered something much bigger than corporate fraud.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Richard opened his briefcase.
He removed a folder.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
“The company you built, Charles, was almost destroyed thirty years ago because someone inside wanted control.””
I looked at the papers.
Names.
Transactions.
Bank records.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Richard Hayes.
My eyes narrowed.
“You.””
He looked at the page.
“Yes.””
The anger returned.
“You were involved?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why is your name everywhere?””
“Because I was investigating them.””
I didn’t speak.
He continued.
“Amelia found evidence that several executives were secretly moving company money through fake accounts. They planned to remove you and take control.””
I looked at Lily.
“And what did Amelia have to do with this?””
Richard’s expression softened.
“She found out they were willing to kill to protect themselves.””
The room became colder.
Lily looked frightened.
“Did they hurt my mother?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
My fists tightened.
“What happened that night?””
Richard looked away.
“The night Amelia disappeared, she was supposed to meet you.””
“Yes.””
“But someone followed her.””
I remembered.
The storm.
The empty apartment.
The phone calls.
The waiting.
“She called me first,” Richard said.
My head snapped up.
“She called you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew someone was listening to your phone.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“She was trying to protect me.””
Richard nodded.
“She told me she had proof. She told me if anything happened, I had to make sure you never found out the truth until it was safe.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Safe?””
My voice shook.
“Thirty years passed.””
Richard lowered his head.
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
The room went quiet.
“You got to know she was alive.””
Richard’s eyes filled with regret.
“I never saw her again.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“After that night, Amelia disappeared from everyone. She changed locations. Changed names. She wanted to protect you.””
“Then how did you know about Lily?””
Richard looked at the child.
“Because I helped deliver her.””
The words shocked me.
Lily stared.
“You were there?””
Richard nodded.
“Your mother was alone. She had no one she could trust.””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Richard looked devastated.
“Because your mother asked me not to.””
“She knew I was alive?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she come back?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“Because she believed coming back would put you in danger.””
Lily wiped her eyes.
“But she left me.””
The pain in her voice broke something inside me.
Richard leaned toward her.
“She never left you.””
Lily looked at him.
“She wrote letters for you.””
“Where are they?””
Richard hesitated.
I noticed immediately.
“Richard.””
He reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“She asked me to keep this until you found Charles.””
Lily stared at it.
“For me?””
“Yes.””
Her hands trembled as she accepted it.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a small note.
She read silently.
Then tears rolled down her cheeks.
I wanted to ask what it said.
But I knew it was hers.
A message from a mother to her daughter.
A moment that belonged only to them.
While Lily held the letter, I looked at Richard.
“You said they’re searching.””
He nodded.
“They know Lily exists.””
“How?””
“Because someone told them.””
“Who?””
Richard looked at me.
And the answer came slowly.
“The same person who made Amelia disappear.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Richard reached into the folder.
He pulled out one final document.
A photograph was attached.
A man standing outside the company headquarters.
A man I recognized.
A man who had attended my family dinners.
A man who had smiled at me for decades.
I stared at the picture.
“No.””
Richard’s voice was quiet.
“I’m sorry, Charles.””
The photograph shook in my hand.
Because the person behind Amelia’s disappearance was not a stranger.
It was someone I had invited into my home.
Someone I had defended.
Someone I called family.
Richard leaned closer.
“The person who betrayed Amelia…”
May you like
He paused.
“…is your own brother.””
