Amused

Chapter 6: The Brother Behind The Betrayal

I stared at the photograph until the face in front of me stopped looking real.

My brother.

Thomas Whitmore.

The man who shared my childhood.

The man who stood beside me when our father died.

The man who hugged me the day I founded my company.

The man who told me, “No matter what happens, we’re family.””

My hands tightened around the paper.

“No.””

Richard didn’t look away.

“I wish it wasn’t true.””

I threw the photograph onto the table.

“You’re lying.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Richard accepted my anger without defending himself.

“I expected you to say that.””

“Because you know what you’re accusing him of.””

“Yes.””

“You’re accusing my brother of destroying my life.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“I’m telling you he destroyed Amelia’s.””

The room became silent.

Lily sat quietly in the corner, holding her mother’s letter against her chest.

She was listening.

She shouldn’t have had to hear any of this.

No child should have to learn that the adults around them were full of secrets and betrayal.

I looked at Richard.

“Tell me why.””

He took a deep breath.

“Because Thomas believed everything you had belonged to him.””

I laughed.

A bitter, empty sound.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard looked at the documents.

“Is it?””

I didn’t answer.

Because deep inside, memories were already returning.

Small moments I had ignored.

Thomas making jokes about my success.

Thomas saying our father always favored me.

Thomas becoming angry when I refused to give him control of certain parts of the company.

I had always explained it away.

He was my brother.

Brothers argued.

Brothers competed.

But this?

This was something else.

Richard opened the folder.

“Your father left the company to both of you.””

“Yes.””

“But the controlling shares went to you.””

“Because I built the business.””

Richard nodded.

“And Thomas never accepted that.””

I looked at the papers.

“What did Amelia discover?””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“She found evidence that Thomas was secretly moving company funds into private accounts.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“She also found evidence that he was planning to force you out.””

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Richard looked at Lily.

“Because when she tried, she realized Thomas already knew she had the evidence.””

I remembered the night Amelia disappeared.

She had been frightened.

Not for herself.

For me.

I remembered asking her what was wrong.

She had touched my face and said:

“Charles, promise me something.””

“What?””

“Promise me you won’t trust someone just because they share your blood.””

At the time, I thought she was talking about a business rival.

I never imagined she meant my brother.

My knees felt weak.

I sat down.

Thirty years.

Thirty years of blaming myself.

Thinking I should have seen the signs.

Thinking I should have protected her.

And all this time…

The danger had been inside my own family.

Lily looked up.

“Was my mother scared of him?””

Richard answered quietly.

“Yes.””

The little girl looked down.

“But she still tried to help people?””

Richard smiled sadly.

“That was Amelia.””

I looked at Lily.

She reminded me of her mother more with every passing moment.

The same courage.

The same kindness.

Even after losing everything.

She still wanted to believe people could be good.

I turned back to Richard.

“What happened after Amelia disappeared?””

Richard was quiet for a moment.

“Thomas thought she was dead.””

The words shocked me.

“You mean he didn’t know?””

“No.””

“Then who made him believe that?””

Richard’s face changed.

“That’s the part we never figured out.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

Richard leaned forward.

“Thomas was involved. But he wasn’t the only person.””

I frowned.

“Someone else?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Richard shook his head.

“I never found out.””

The answer frustrated me.

After thirty years, I finally had pieces of the truth.

But the picture was still incomplete.

I stood.

“Where is Thomas now?””

Richard hesitated.

That hesitation bothered me.

“Richard.””

“He’s still alive.””

“Where?””

“He’s on the board of your company.””

I froze.

“What?””

Richard nodded.

“After Amelia disappeared, he became your closest advisor.””

My stomach turned.

Of course.

While I was searching for Amelia.

While I was drowning in grief.

Thomas was standing beside me.

Helping run the empire.

Knowing exactly what happened.

I walked toward the window.

The city stretched below me.

Millions of people.

Millions of lives.

And somewhere among them was the man who betrayed me.

My own brother.

My phone suddenly rang.

The sound cut through the room.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

No one spoke.

Only silence.

Then a voice.

A voice I knew.

“Charles.””

My blood froze.

Thomas.

After thirty years, I heard my brother’s voice again.

“Thomas.””

Richard immediately stood.

“Don’t answer him.””

I ignored him.

“Where are you?””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“You always were impatient.””

My hand tightened around the device.

“You knew.””

Silence.

Then:

“About what?””

“Don’t play games.””

Another pause.

Then Thomas sighed.

“I was hoping you’d never find out.””

The words hit me harder than any confession.

“You knew about Amelia.””

“I knew enough.””

My vision blurred with anger.

“Where is she?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

“Is she alive?””

More silence.

Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.

“Charles, the woman you’re searching for is not the same woman you remember.””

I looked at Richard.

He looked terrified.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas continued.

“It means Amelia made choices.””

“What choices?””

“You think you know the whole story.””

My voice became sharper.

“Tell me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because if you learn the truth, you won’t just hate me.””

The line crackled.

“You’ll hate her too.””

I felt something break inside me.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Thomas’s voice became quieter.

“She never told you why she left.””

My heart stopped.

Because he was right.

There were still missing pieces.

Even Amelia had secrets.

“Where is she?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Look inside the blue ring.””

I looked down.

The ring was sitting on the table beside Lily.

“What?””

“Amelia hid the truth there.””

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Nobody moved.

Then Lily slowly picked up the ring.

“My mother said never to open it unless I found you.””

I looked at her.

“What did you say?””

She touched the blue jewel.

“She told me this ring wasn’t just a ring.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Lily, give it to me.””

She pulled it closer.

“No.””

Her voice surprised all of us.

“My mother trusted me with this.””

I looked at the child.

She wasn’t afraid anymore.

She was protecting the last thing her mother left her.

I knelt beside her.

“Lily.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother trusted you because she knew you were strong.””

The girl looked at the ring.

Then slowly placed it in my hand.

I examined it carefully.

The blue stone seemed ordinary.

But Thomas’s words echoed in my mind.

Look inside the blue ring.

I searched the edges.

Then I saw it.

A tiny hidden opening.

A mechanism so small it was almost invisible.

Richard whispered:

“She hid something inside.””

My fingers carefully pressed the side.

The jewel opened.

Inside was a piece of folded paper.

And one tiny photograph.

I unfolded the paper.

Only one sentence was written.

My heart stopped when I read it.

*Charles, if you found this, it means Thomas told you I was the villain.*

I looked at the photograph.

And my hands began to shake.

Because the picture showed Amelia standing beside a person I never expected to see.

A person who should have been impossible.

A person who was supposed to be gone.

May you like

On the back of the photograph were three words:

*I saved him.*
