Amused

Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The photograph slipped from my hand.

It landed on the dusty floor with a quiet sound.

But inside my head, everything exploded.

The man standing beside Amelia in the picture was impossible.

I had spent twenty-five years trusting him.

I had shared my company secrets with him.

I had called him family.

His name was Richard Hayes.

My closest friend.

My business partner.

The only person who stood beside me after Amelia disappeared.

Lily looked from the photograph to my face.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

I didn’t respond.

My eyes remained locked on the picture.

Amelia was smiling.

Not the polite smile she gave strangers.

The real one.

The one I remembered from our young days.

The baby in her arms was wrapped in a small white blanket.

And Richard was standing beside her, his hand resting gently on Amelia’s shoulder.

Like he belonged there.

Like he had been part of a life I never knew existed.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

Then another.

And another.

“No,” I whispered.

Lily looked worried.

“Who is he?””

I picked up the photograph.

“His name is Richard Hayes.””

“Do you know him?””

I stared at the man’s face.

“Yes.””

“How?””

I took a slow breath.

“He was my best friend.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than anything I had experienced that night.

Lily looked down.

“Was he my father?””

The question hit me harder than expected.

I looked at the photograph again.

The answer should have been obvious.

But something inside me refused to accept it.

“I don’t know.””

The little girl’s face fell.

I immediately softened my voice.

“But we’re going to find out.””

She nodded slowly.

For the first time since I met her, she looked less like a frightened child and more like someone searching for a missing piece of herself.

I turned the photograph over.

There was a date written on the back.

Thirty years ago.

Three months before Amelia disappeared.

My chest tightened.

That meant Richard knew about Lily.

He knew Amelia was alive.

He knew something I had spent decades trying to discover.

I walked around the apartment.

My memories attacked me from every corner.

The old kitchen where Amelia used to dance while cooking.

The small living room where we planned to buy a house.

The window where she watched the rain.

Everything was still here.

Except her.

I opened drawers.

Nothing.

I checked shelves.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something strange.

A small mark on the wooden floor.

Like something heavy had been moved.

I knelt down.

There was a hidden compartment beneath the old rug.

My heart started beating faster.

I lifted the wooden panel.

Inside was a small metal box.

Lily moved closer.

“What is that?””

“I don’t know.””

The box was covered in dust.

But the lock was new.

Someone had opened it recently.

I pulled out my phone.

Before I could call anyone, the screen lit up.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

*Stop searching. You already lost Amelia once. Don’t lose yourself too.*

My jaw tightened.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew exactly where I was.

I showed Robert the message.

His expression changed.

“Sir, we need to leave.””

“Not yet.””

“Mr. Whitmore—”

“Not yet.””

I looked at the metal box.

For thirty years, people had lied to me.

Tonight, I was done waiting.

I forced the lock open.

Inside were three things.

A newspaper clipping.

A small USB drive.

And a letter.

The newspaper clipping was old.

The headline immediately caught my attention.

*LOCAL WOMAN VANISHES AFTER WITNESSING CORPORATE FRAUD INVESTIGATION.*

My hands tightened.

I read the article.

Amelia had disappeared after reporting financial crimes connected to several powerful businessmen.

The police investigation had ended quickly.

Too quickly.

But the name mentioned in the article made my blood run cold.

Richard Hayes.

The article claimed Richard had been the last person seen with Amelia before she vanished.

I stared at the paper.

“No…”

Lily looked at me.

“What?””

I folded the newspaper.

“I need to speak with Richard.””

“Is he dangerous?””

The question came from a child.

But it carried the wisdom of someone much older.

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

And that scared me.

Because Richard was the one person I thought I knew.

The USB drive contained dozens of files.

But we needed a computer.

I took the box.

“We’re leaving.””

As we walked toward the door, I stopped.

Something felt wrong.

The apartment was too quiet.

I looked back.

Then I noticed the window.

It was slightly open.

I knew it hadn’t been that way before.

Someone had been inside.

Someone had followed us.

I moved quickly toward Lily.

“Stay behind me.””

She looked frightened.

“What happened?””

“Someone was here.””

Robert immediately stepped forward.

“Sir, we need to get you out.””

Then we heard it.

A sound from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming closer.

Lily grabbed my hand.

I could feel her trembling.

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then someone knocked.

Three times.

Slowly.

A voice came from the other side.

“Charles?””

My entire body froze.

I knew that voice.

Thirty years.

And I would recognize it anywhere.

Richard.

“Open the door,” he said.

My hand tightened around the metal box.

How did he know I was here?

Why was he here?

And most importantly—

Did he come because he wanted to help me?

Or because he wanted to stop me?

I looked at Lily.

She was staring at the door.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“That’s not the man my mother told me about.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“My mother said if Richard Hayes ever found us…”

The knocking came again.

Harder this time.

Lily stepped back.

“She said we should run.””

The door handle slowly began to turn.

And in that moment, I realized something terrifying.

For thirty years, I believed Amelia disappeared because someone took her away.

But maybe the truth was worse.

Maybe she disappeared because someone close to me helped make it happen.

The door opened.

And Richard Hayes stood there.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Still wearing the same calm expression I remembered.

But his eyes changed when he saw Lily.

The color drained from his face.

He whispered one word.

“Impossible.””

I stepped between them.

“Richard.””

His eyes moved to mine.

For the first time in my life, my oldest friend looked afraid.

“Charles,” he said quietly.

“You need to leave.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His face tightened.

“Because if they know she’s here…”

“Who?””

Richard looked past me at Lily.

And the fear in his eyes grew.

“Because Amelia’s enemies were never looking for you.””

A long silence followed.

May you like

Then he said:

“They were looking for her daughter.””
