Amused

Chapter 7: The Truth Amelia Hid

The photograph trembled between my fingers.

I looked at it again.

Then again.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The person standing beside Amelia was someone I had buried in my memories decades ago.

Someone whose name had never appeared in any investigation.

Someone everyone believed was gone.

My father.

Edward Whitmore.

I felt the room disappear.

“No…”

The word escaped my mouth before I even realized I had spoken.

Lily looked at me.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

My father had died thirty-two years ago.

I had stood beside his hospital bed.

I had watched his final breath.

I had held his hand when he told me to take care of the company.

There was no possibility.

And yet there he was.

Standing beside Amelia.

Alive.

The photograph was old, but clear enough.

My father.

Amelia.

And behind them, a building I recognized.

The original Whitmore headquarters.

Richard stepped closer.

“Charles?””

I handed him the photograph.

His expression changed the moment he saw it.

“That’s impossible.””

Those were the exact words I had said.

I looked at him.

“You didn’t know?””

Richard slowly shook his head.

“No.””

For the first time that night, Richard looked completely lost.

I unfolded the paper from inside the ring.

The handwriting was Amelia’s.

My hands shook as I read.

*Charles,*

*If you are reading this, then you finally know that the story you were given was never the truth.*

I stopped.

Every word felt like a door opening to a room I wasn’t ready to enter.

*You believed your father died because that was what everyone needed you to believe. But Edward Whitmore did not die the way you were told.*

My heartbeat grew louder.

I looked at Richard.

“My father…”

Richard said nothing.

I continued.

*Your father discovered the same thing I discovered. The people threatening your company were not trying to take control from you. They were trying to erase the Whitmore family completely.*

I lowered the paper.

A terrible thought formed.

My father.

Amelia.

Thomas.

Everything was connected.

But how?

Lily looked worried.

“Mr. Whitmore, are you okay?””

I forced myself to breathe.

“I don’t know.””

She reached for my hand.

A small gesture.

But somehow, it helped.

I kept reading.

*Thomas was not the beginning of the betrayal. He was only a piece of it.*

My eyes widened.

A piece.

Not the mastermind.

**Charles, I know what you are thinking. You believe Thomas destroyed us. You believe he took everything from you.

But the truth is harder. Thomas was manipulated.**

I stopped.

Richard looked at me.

“Manipulated?””

I nodded.

The letter continued.

*Your brother was angry and jealous, but he was not the monster you think he is. Someone used his resentment against him. Someone who knew exactly how to control him.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Someone.

Again.

The same unknown person who had been hiding behind everything.

I kept reading.

*The person behind this knew our family better than anyone. They knew our weaknesses. They knew our fears. They knew how to make us destroy ourselves.*

A chill ran through me.

Because one name immediately came to mind.

But I refused to say it.

Not yet.

Richard noticed my expression.

“Who are you thinking about?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

But I did.

I just wasn’t ready.

The letter continued.

*I left because I discovered Lily was in danger. I knew they would use her to control me. I knew they would use her to control you.*

I looked at Lily.

She was holding the blue ring carefully.

Her eyes were fixed on me.

*I wanted to come back. Every day, I wanted to come back. But every time I got close, I saw someone watching.*

My chest tightened.

*I watched you from a distance, Charles. I saw you build your empire. I saw you become the man you always wanted to be. I saw you smile for the world while carrying the pain I caused.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

I quickly wiped it away.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because I had spent thirty years pretending I wasn’t still waiting for her.

*I am sorry.*

Two simple words.

But they carried decades of pain.

*I am sorry I let you believe I abandoned you. I am sorry I let you hate me. But I would rather have you hate me and live than love me and die.*

I closed my eyes.

Amelia.

Even after everything.

She was still protecting me.

A sound interrupted us.

A car door closing outside.

Richard immediately turned toward the window.

His face changed.

“We need to leave.””

I folded the letter.

“What now?””

“Now.””

The urgency in his voice made me move.

“What did you see?””

Richard looked outside.

“Two cars.””

“Whose?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I grabbed Lily’s hand.

“Come on.””

We moved quickly down the hallway.

But before we reached the stairs, the lights went out.

Darkness surrounded us.

Lily gasped.

I pulled her close.

“Stay with me.””

A sound came from the lower floor.

Footsteps.

More than one person.

Richard whispered:

“They found us.””

We moved silently.

The old building suddenly felt much smaller.

Every creaking floorboard sounded like an alarm.

Then a voice echoed from below.

“Charles.””

I froze.

Not Thomas.

Someone else.

A woman.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

“Come downstairs.””

Richard’s face became pale.

He knew that voice.

“Who is she?”” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

“Richard.””

His voice was barely audible.

“She’s the reason Amelia disappeared.””

My stomach dropped.

The woman below called again.

“Charles, you deserve the truth.””

Richard grabbed my arm.

“Don’t listen.””

“Why?””

“Because she’s very good at making people believe her.””

The footsteps started climbing.

Slowly.

One step.

Then another.

Lily held my hand tighter.

The woman’s voice came closer.

“I know you’re here.””

The hallway remained dark.

Then she appeared at the top of the stairs.

An elegant woman.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

Calm expression.

She looked nothing like someone dangerous.

But Richard stepped back like he had seen a ghost.

“Margaret.””

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Richard.””

Then she looked at me.

“Charles Whitmore.””

I stared at her.

“Who are you?””

Her smile disappeared.

“My name is Margaret Vale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Richard’s reaction told me everything.

“You should have stayed away,” Richard said.

Margaret looked at him.

“You always were loyal to the wrong people.””

Then she looked at Lily.

And her expression changed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

“So,” she whispered.

“Amelia really did leave her daughter with you.””

I stepped in front of Lily.

“What do you want?””

Margaret looked at me calmly.

“The same thing I wanted thirty years ago.””

“What?””

She smiled faintly.

“The truth.””

I almost laughed.

“Truth?””

After everything?

“You’re the one who hid it.””

Margaret tilted her head.

“You still believe Amelia was innocent?””

My jaw tightened.

“She saved people.””

“She destroyed lives.””

“No.””

Margaret took a step closer.

“You don’t know what your beloved Amelia did.””

I looked at the letter in my hand.

“Then tell me.””

Margaret smiled.

“I will.””

She reached into her coat.

And pulled out an old document.

A document with Amelia’s signature.

My heart stopped.

Because beneath the signature was a confession.

May you like

And the first line read:

*I, Amelia Rose Carter, admit that I was responsible for Edward Whitmore’s disappearance.*
