Amused

Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Accident

The next morning, Daniel Sterling watched a man walk into his mansion who should have been buried twenty years ago.

Thomas Harrington looked older.

Much older.

His hair was completely gray.

His face carried deep lines.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Daniel knew those eyes.

Because they belonged to Victoria.

Thomas stopped in the entrance hall.

His gaze moved across the room.

First to Daniel.

Then to Lily.

Then to Michael.

A slow smile appeared.

“So.””

His voice was rough.

“The missing child finally came home.””

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“You were alive.””

Thomas looked amused.

“Disappointed?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You were the last person seen with my parents.””

Thomas said nothing.

“You knew Lily survived.””

Still nothing.

“You knew where she was.””

Thomas smiled.

“And yet, you never found her.””

The cruelty in his voice made Daniel’s anger rise.

Michael stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Still protecting them?””

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

Thomas laughed.

“No.””

He looked around the mansion.

“I know exactly what I’ve done.””

Daniel stared.

“You killed my parents.””

Thomas tilted his head.

“That’s a serious accusation.””

“You destroyed my family.””

Thomas walked closer.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked at Lily.

“Your father discovered the truth about his own company.””

Lily looked confused.

Thomas continued.

“He discovered that his father built the Sterling empire using illegal deals.””

Daniel froze.

“That’s a lie.””

Thomas smiled.

“Is it?””

He looked at Robert.

The lawyer avoided his gaze.

Daniel noticed.

“Robert?””

The old lawyer sighed.

“Your grandfather made mistakes.””

Daniel stared.

“You knew?””

“I knew rumors.””

Thomas laughed.

“Everyone knew rumors.””

Michael stepped forward.

“But your father tried to fix it.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

A strange sadness appeared on his face.

“He wanted to clean everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why kill him?””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Because he wouldn’t stop.””

The room became silent.

Daniel understood.

His father had discovered something dangerous.

Something worth killing for.

Thomas looked at Lily.

“And she was the key.””

Lily stepped back.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at the locket.

“Because your mother left something hidden inside that necklace.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel turned to Lily.

“What?””

She touched it.

“I’ve never opened it before.””

Daniel stared.

“But we did.””

“No.””

Thomas smiled.

“You opened the first compartment.””

Everyone looked confused.

“The first?””

Thomas reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small metal tool.

Daniel immediately moved.

“What are you doing?””

Thomas ignored him.

“The necklace was designed by your mother.””

He looked at Lily.

“She knew someone would come after her family.””

Lily slowly removed the locket.

Thomas pointed.

“Press the side.””

She hesitated.

Daniel nodded.

“Do it.””

She pressed the tiny edge.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small piece of folded paper.

Nobody breathed.

Lily opened it.

The writing was faded.

But readable.

Her mother’s handwriting.

Daniel watched as Lily read.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

“It says…”

Her voice broke.

“‘If Lily is found, do not trust Michael.’”

The room exploded into silence.

Daniel turned.

Michael looked shocked.

“I didn’t know about that.””

Thomas smiled.

“There it is.””

Daniel stared at Michael.

The man who saved Lily.

The man who claimed he protected her.

The man who returned after twenty years.

Michael looked hurt.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

But Daniel stepped back.

Too many lies.

Too many secrets.

Lily looked between them.

“I don’t understand.””

Thomas smiled.

“That’s because everyone has been protecting you from the truth.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And you?””

Thomas’s smile faded.

“I’m the only one who wants you to know it.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“The man who hid my sister.””

“I hid her because your uncle was trying to find her.””

Michael shouted:

“That’s not true!””

Thomas looked at him.

“Isn’t it?””

Michael went silent.

Daniel saw it.

The hesitation.

The fear.

And he hated that part of him wondered.

Thomas walked toward the door.

“I know this is difficult.””

Daniel stared.

“You’re leaving?””

Thomas smiled.

“No.””

He looked at Lily.

“I’m giving you time.””

“Time for what?””

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“To decide which person in this room destroyed your family.””

Then he left.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Daniel turned toward Michael.

“What really happened that night?””

Michael looked down.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Michael looked at Lily.

“Because your father asked me to disappear.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Michael’s eyes filled with regret.

“He told me if I stayed, Lily would die.””

Daniel stared.

“Then why does my mother’s message say not to trust you?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Because your mother wrote that before she knew the truth.””

Lily whispered:

“What truth?””

Michael opened his eyes.

“The truth that the person who betrayed your family…”

He looked toward the door where Thomas had disappeared.

“…was not the person everyone thought.””

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

Daniel read it.

May you like

And his blood turned cold.

*Ask your sister what she remembers from the night your parents died.*
