Chapter 3: The Secret Buried Twenty Years Ago

Daniel didn’t sleep.

Not after the phone call.

Not after hearing the words that changed everything.

Your sister’s disappearance was not an accident.

The mansion was quiet now.

The guests were gone.

The music had stopped.

The champagne glasses remained untouched on tables covered with white cloth, reminders of a celebration that had transformed into something else entirely.

A search for the truth.

Daniel stood alone in his study, staring at old photographs spread across his desk.

Pictures of his family.

Pictures of Lily.

Pictures of a life that ended in one terrible night.

Behind him, the door opened softly.

“Daniel?””

He turned.

Lily stood there.

She had changed out of the maid uniform and wore a simple black dress provided by the staff.

But the locket remained around her neck.

“You should be sleeping,” Daniel said.

She gave a small smile.

“So should you.””

For the first time that night, Daniel smiled.

A real smile.

Something he hadn’t done in years.

“I spent twenty years looking for you.””

Lily looked down.

“I spent twenty years wondering why nobody was looking for me.””

The words hurt.

Daniel walked closer.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked at him.

“You didn’t leave me.””

“No.””

“But someone did.””

Silence filled the room.

Daniel hated that he didn’t have an answer.

“I promise you,” he said, “I’ll find out what happened.””

Lily touched the locket.

“I don’t need money.””

“I know.””

“I don’t need a mansion.””

“I know.””

Her eyes became wet.

“I just want to know if I really belong somewhere.””

Daniel’s heart broke.

“You belong with me.””

A knock interrupted them.

An older man entered.

It was Robert Hayes, Daniel’s family lawyer.

He had worked with the Sterlings for thirty years.

“Daniel.””

His expression was serious.

“I heard what happened.””

Daniel nodded.

“Robert, I need every file connected to the accident twenty years ago.””

Robert froze.

Only for a second.

But Daniel noticed.

“What?””

The lawyer looked away.

“Nothing.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Robert.””

The older man sighed.

“There are things I never told you.””

Lily looked nervous.

“What things?””

Robert closed the door behind him.

“The night your parents died, there was another vehicle involved.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“The police report said your parents lost control because of bad weather.””

Robert’s face tightened.

“But there were witnesses who said another car was following them.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father’s final instructions were clear.””

Daniel froze.

“My father?””

Robert nodded.

“He left a letter.””

“A letter?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“Where is it?””

Robert hesitated.

“I gave it to Victoria.””

The room went silent.

Lily looked at Daniel.

“Your fiancée?””

Daniel couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“Why would she have my father’s letter?””

Robert looked ashamed.

“Because she asked for it.””

Daniel’s hands clenched.

“What does that mean?””

Before Robert could answer, Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

Daniel opened it.

There was a photograph.

His father’s old letter.

And underneath it, a single sentence.

STOP SEARCHING FOR THE PAST.

Daniel showed it to Robert.

The lawyer’s face turned pale.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because that letter disappeared twenty years ago.””

Lily stepped closer.

“Who sent it?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

Then something caught his attention.

In the corner of the image was a reflection.

A person standing behind the camera.

A woman.

Wearing a familiar engagement ring.

Daniel’s breathing stopped.

Victoria.

“She had it,” he whispered.

Robert looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

But Daniel was already walking toward the door.

“Where are you going?”” Lily asked.

“To find out how deep this goes.””

Lily grabbed his arm.

“Don’t go alone.””

Daniel looked at her.

For twenty years, he had imagined the day he would find his sister.

He never imagined he would find her while uncovering a betrayal.

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

They walked together through the dark hallway.

But before they reached the entrance, every light in the mansion suddenly turned off.

The house went completely black.

Then Daniel heard a voice from the shadows.

A woman’s voice.

“Looking for answers, Daniel?””

He stopped.

Because he knew that voice.

Victoria stepped into the dim light.

And she wasn’t crying anymore.

She was smiling.

“You really should have listened to me.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What did you do?””

Victoria looked at Lily.

Then back at Daniel.

“I didn’t make your sister disappear.””

A pause.

“I protected you from finding out who she really is.””

Lily stepped backward.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria’s smile widened.

May you like

Then she said the one thing that made Daniel’s blood turn cold.

“Because Lily Sterling was never supposed to survive that night.””
