Amused

Chapter 10: The Truth That Was Worth Twenty Years

Daniel didn’t pick up the phone.

He couldn’t.

He simply stared at the photograph lying on the marble floor.

A woman.

A little girl.

A rainy night.

And a secret that had survived twenty years.

Victoria’s mother.

Eleanor Harrington.

The woman who had attended family dinners.

The woman who had comforted Daniel after his parents died.

The woman who had told him, “Some wounds never heal, but you learn to live with them.””

The woman who knew exactly what happened.

Lily looked at the photograph.

Her face became pale.

“That’s her.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You remember her?””

Lily nodded slowly.

“Not her face.””

She touched her temple.

“But her voice.””

The room was silent.

Michael looked at Victoria.

“Your mother took her.””

Victoria shook her head immediately.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, she wouldn’t.””

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, he didn’t see the confident woman who controlled every room.

He saw someone scared.

Someone whose entire world was collapsing.

“You knew something.””

Victoria looked down.

“I knew my mother was involved.””

Daniel felt like the ground disappeared.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

“How long did you know?””

“Since I was sixteen.””

Everyone froze.

Lily whispered:

“You were sixteen?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“My father disappeared after the accident. My mother became different. She stopped sleeping. She stopped talking.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“And you said nothing.””

“I was a child.””

“You were old enough to know.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You think I didn’t hate myself for that?””

The anger in her voice surprised everyone.

“I spent years wondering why my mother had nightmares every night. Why she kept old photographs hidden. Why she would cry whenever someone mentioned the Sterling family.””

Daniel stared.

“Then why did you come into my life?””

Victoria looked away.

“Because my mother wanted me to.””

A terrible silence followed.

Daniel understood.

She hadn’t met him by chance.

“What was your plan?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“At first?””

She laughed sadly.

“To find out what you knew.””

Daniel felt sick.

“And later?””

Victoria looked at him.

“That changed.””

“Did it?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“I did fall in love with you.””

Daniel said nothing.

“I know you don’t believe me.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Victoria looked hurt.

“But it was real.””

Daniel looked at the woman he almost married.

“The problem is…”

He swallowed.

“I don’t know which parts were real anymore.””

Those words destroyed her.

Because they were the one thing she couldn’t manipulate.

The truth.

Michael walked toward the photograph.

“We need to find Eleanor.””

Daniel looked at him.

“She’s alive?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Everyone turned.

“You knew?””

“I found her years ago.””

Daniel’s anger returned.

“Of course you did.””

Victoria wiped her tears.

“She was sick.””

“What?””

“She had been living alone under another name.””

Michael frowned.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because she was terrified.””

“Of what?””

Victoria looked at Lily.

“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””

Daniel picked up the photograph.

“Where is she?””

Victoria hesitated.

Then answered:

“At Saint Claire’s Care Center.””

Daniel didn’t wait.

Twenty minutes later, the Sterling cars rushed through the city.

Nobody spoke.

The silence inside the vehicle was filled with questions.

Daniel sat beside Lily.

She looked out the window.

“I’m sorry.””

He turned.

“For what?””

“For bringing all of this back.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You didn’t bring anything back.””

He looked at the locket around her neck.

“It was always there.””

Lily smiled faintly.

“I spent my whole life thinking nobody wanted me.””

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“You were wanted.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I spent twenty years looking.””

She looked at him.

“You really never stopped?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked away.

Because the answer was simple.

“Because you were my sister.””

Lily looked down.

And for the first time, she believed it.

When they arrived at Saint Claire’s, an old nurse guided them to a private room.

Eleanor Harrington sat beside the window.

She looked fragile.

Older than Daniel remembered.

But when she saw Lily…

She immediately started crying.

“Oh my God.””

Nobody moved.

Lily froze.

The old woman stood slowly.

“Lily.””

The way she said the name broke something inside the room.

Because it wasn’t a stranger saying it.

It was someone who had remembered.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Eleanor looked at him.

Her eyes filled.

“You’re Daniel.””

He stared.

“You remember me?””

She nodded.

“You were seventeen.””

A tear fell.

“You held your sister’s hand while she cried.””

Daniel couldn’t breathe.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Because your mother called me.””

Everyone became still.

“My mother?””

Eleanor nodded.

“The night of the accident, your mother knew someone was coming.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who?””

Eleanor looked at Victoria.

Then at Lily.

“Your grandfather’s old business partner.””

Michael frowned.

“Thomas?””

“No.””

The room froze.

Eleanor whispered:

“Someone much closer.””

Daniel’s heart raced.

“Who?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“The person your father trusted most.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she said:

“Your mother’s own brother.””

Michael.

Everyone turned.

Michael went pale.

“No.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“He planned everything.””

Daniel looked at Michael.

The man who saved Lily.

The man who had been searching for answers.

The man who had been protecting her.

Michael stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Eleanor looked at him sadly.

“You know it’s not.””

Daniel’s mind spun.

“Then why?””

Eleanor continued.

“Because Michael discovered your father changed the will.””

Michael’s face changed.

The truth finally appeared.

Daniel looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Michael’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t kill them.””

“Then tell me.””

Michael said nothing.

“Tell me!””

The older man broke.

“I wanted the money.””

The words shattered the room.

Lily covered her mouth.

Michael looked destroyed.

“I was drowning in debt. Your father found out.””

Daniel stared.

“And the accident?””

Michael shook his head.

“I arranged it.””

Nobody moved.

“But I didn’t know Thomas would turn it into something worse.””

Daniel’s voice became empty.

“You took my sister.””

Michael cried.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because after the crash, I saw Lily alive.””

His voice broke.

“And I knew if I left her there, Thomas would kill her.””

Daniel stared.

“You’re saying you saved her?””

“I was trying to.””

“After you caused it.””

Michael lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Lily began crying.

“You were the reason I lost everything.””

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

Daniel wanted to hate him.

He should have.

But the truth was more complicated than anger.

Michael had committed the crime.

But someone else had hidden it.

Someone else had manipulated everything.

Thomas.

Eleanor.

Victoria.

Everyone had pieces.

Everyone had blood on their hands.

Then Eleanor spoke again.

“There is one more thing.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She reached into a drawer beside her bed.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“This was your mother’s final message.””

Daniel took it.

His hands shook.

He opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

My Daniel,

If you are reading this, then Lily has come home.

I need you to know something.

People will tell you the truth is simple.

It is not.

The person who hurts you is not always the person who hates you.

And the person who loves you is not always the person who protects you.

Daniel stopped.

A tear fell onto the paper.

The final line was short.

But it changed everything.

Forgive those who made mistakes.

But never forget those who chose them.

Daniel looked around the room.

At Michael.

At Victoria.

At Lily.

Twenty years of secrets had finally ended.

But forgiveness?

That would take much longer.

Months later, the Sterling mansion was different.

The empty rooms no longer felt haunted.

The silence no longer felt like loss.

Because Lily lived there now.

Not as an employee.

Not as a stranger.

As family.

Daniel never recovered the life he thought he would have with Victoria.

But he recovered something more important.

The truth.

Victoria left the city after the investigation began.

She testified against her father’s network and helped expose the crimes that had been hidden for decades.

Michael turned himself in.

He accepted responsibility.

And every year, on the anniversary of the accident, Daniel visited the place where everything changed.

One evening, Lily joined him.

She stood beside him beneath the old oak tree.

“Do you ever wish you never found out?””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

“Even knowing everything?””

He smiled sadly.

“Especially knowing everything.””

Lily touched the locket.

“You know what’s strange?””

“What?””

“For twenty years, I thought this necklace was the only thing connecting me to my past.””

Daniel smiled.

“But?””

She looked at him.

“I was wrong.””

She touched his hand.

“The person who remembered me was.””

Daniel looked at his sister.

The little girl he lost.

The woman he found.

And he finally understood something.

Diamonds could be stolen.

Fortunes could disappear.

Promises could be broken.

But some things were worth searching for forever.

And sometimes…

The greatest treasure a billionaire could ever find wasn’t hidden in a vault.

May you like

It was waiting at the end of a twenty-year journey.

It was family.
