Chapter 6: The Man Who Returned From the Dead

The mansion gates opened slowly.

Daniel watched from the security monitor as a black car entered the driveway.

Rain poured across the windshield.

The headlights cut through the darkness.

Inside the vehicle sat an older man.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

A face Daniel had only seen in photographs.

A face he thought belonged to a dead man.

Lily stood beside him.

“Is that him?””

Daniel couldn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the screen.

Michael Sterling.

His uncle.

Alive.

The man who disappeared twenty years ago.

The man connected to the night Daniel lost everything.

Robert whispered:

“This cannot be happening.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

The lawyer looked terrified.

“I swear.””

Victoria remained silent.

Too silent.

Daniel noticed.

“You knew he was alive.””

Victoria looked at him.

“I knew someone was.””

His anger exploded.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t know where he was.””

“You knew!””

Victoria looked away.

“I spent years trying to find him.””

“Why?””

“Because he was the only person who knew what happened.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You let me believe my sister was dead.””

Victoria’s voice became emotional.

“I didn’t know she was alive.””

“But you suspected.””

“Yes.””

The honesty made it worse.

Daniel turned away.

The front door opened.

A moment later, footsteps echoed through the mansion.

Slow.

Confident.

Then he appeared.

Michael Sterling.

Older than the photographs.

But unmistakably him.

Daniel stared.

The man looked at Lily.

And tears immediately filled his eyes.

“Lily.””

She stepped backward.

“How do you know my name?””

Michael looked broken.

“Because I’m the reason you’re alive.””

Daniel moved between them.

“You have five seconds to explain.””

Michael looked at him.

“Daniel.””

Hearing his name from that man’s mouth made his anger burn hotter.

“Don’t act like you know me.””

Michael lowered his eyes.

“I knew you when you were seventeen.””

“You abandoned us.””

“I saved you.””

Daniel laughed.

“Saved me?””

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Daniel pointed toward Lily.

“You took her.””

Michael looked at Lily.

“I did.””

The admission shocked everyone.

Lily’s face turned pale.

“You took me?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Michael looked devastated.

“Because if I didn’t, you would have died.””

Silence.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who was going to kill her?””

Michael looked at him.

“Our own family.””

The words echoed.

Robert whispered:

“Michael…”

Michael turned.

“You knew.””

The lawyer looked ashamed.

“I suspected.””

Daniel’s eyes moved between them.

“What is going on?””

Michael walked closer.

“Your father discovered your grandfather’s old empire wasn’t built the way you thought.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your family made enemies.””

“We know that.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He looked at Lily.

“Your sister was born into a war she never understood.””

Lily touched her necklace.

“What war?””

Michael’s face became heavy.

“A war over inheritance.””

Daniel stared.

“My parents were killed because of money?””

“Partly.””

“Partly?””

Michael looked at Victoria.

Everyone followed his gaze.

Victoria went pale.

Daniel noticed.

“What?””

Michael said quietly:

“She knows.””

Victoria’s eyes widened.

“Michael, don’t.””

Daniel turned.

“Knows what?””

Michael continued.

“She knows who ordered the accident.””

The room went silent.

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel stared.

“Then why did he say that?””

Victoria looked terrified.

Because for the first time, she had no perfect answer.

Michael stepped closer.

“Daniel, your parents were not the target.””

Daniel felt cold.

“Then who was?””

Michael looked at Lily.

“Her.””

Lily covered her mouth.

“Why me?””

Michael’s voice broke.

“Because your parents changed their will the night before the accident.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Michael nodded.

“They discovered someone planned to take control of everything.””

“Who?””

Michael looked toward Victoria.

Then said:

“The person who was supposed to become part of this family.””

Daniel’s heart dropped.

Victoria whispered:

“No.””

Michael’s eyes hardened.

“Your father trusted Thomas Harrington.””

Daniel slowly turned toward Victoria.

“Your father.””

Victoria stepped backward.

“I didn’t know.””

Michael’s voice was cold.

“But you knew enough.””

Daniel stared at his fiancée.

The woman who had stood beside him.

The woman who had framed Lily.

The woman who had hidden the truth.

A question formed in his mind.

One terrifying question.

If Victoria knew Lily was alive…

Why had she waited twenty years to reveal her?

Then Michael reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“This was found with Lily the night I saved her.””

Daniel looked at it.

“What is it?””

Michael handed it to him.

“Your father’s final message.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was one sentence.

His blood ran cold.

Because the handwriting was his father’s.

May you like

And the message said:

*Daniel, if Lily returns one day, trust no one who claims to love you.*
