Chapter 2: The Girl Behind the Veil
Nobody moved.
The entire ballroom seemed trapped inside a single moment.
A billionaire stood in front of a young maid, staring at a silver locket that had somehow crossed twenty years of pain, searching, and unanswered questions.
The maid looked terrified.
“Why did you call me Lily?””
Daniel couldn’t answer immediately.
His throat tightened.
Because saying the name out loud made everything feel real.
“Because that was my sister’s name.””
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Daniel, stop.””
He didn’t look at her.
“Not now.””
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“This is ridiculous. You’re letting a stranger manipulate you.””
Daniel finally turned.
“A stranger who has my mother’s photograph?””
Victoria opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The maid looked between them.
“I think there’s been a mistake.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What’s your name?””
She hesitated.
“Lily.””
The room went silent again.
“My full name is Lily Carter.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of searching.
He remembered a little girl with messy brown hair running through the garden behind their old home.
A little girl who always held his hand when thunderstorms came.
A little girl who cried when he left for school.
“Don’t forget me, Danny.””
That was the last thing she ever said to him.
Daniel opened his eyes.
“Do you remember anything from before the accident?””
Lily looked down.
“Not much.””
She touched the locket.
“I remember voices.””
“Whose voices?””
“My mother’s.””
Daniel froze.
Lily continued.
“She used to sing when I couldn’t sleep.””
A tear slipped down Daniel’s face.
Because that was true.
Their mother used to sing the same song every night.
A song nobody else knew.
Daniel whispered:
“What else?””
Lily looked uncomfortable.
“There was a boy.””
Daniel’s heart raced.
“What boy?””
“He called me Lilybird.””
Daniel stepped back.
Only one person had ever called her that.
Him.
The guests watched silently as the impossible truth began taking shape.
Daniel reached into his wallet and pulled out an old photograph.
It was worn from years of being carried everywhere.
Two children stood beside their parents.
The little girl wore a silver locket.
Daniel handed it to her.
Lily stared at the photograph.
Her fingers covered her mouth.
“That’s…”
“Our family.””
She looked at the little girl.
Then at the necklace.
Then back at Daniel.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, that can’t be.””
Daniel moved closer.
“I know this is impossible.””
He swallowed.
“But you’re wearing the same necklace.””
Lily shook her head.
“My whole life, I thought I was nobody.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The orphanage never knew where I came from. They said I was found after a car accident.””
Daniel felt like the air had disappeared.
“Where?””
“Near a highway.””
“When?””
Lily looked at him.
“The night my parents died.””
Daniel’s chest tightened.
The pieces connected.
A missing child.
A car accident.
A silver locket.
Twenty years of searching.
Victoria suddenly laughed.
It was a small, nervous laugh.
Everyone turned.
“This is emotional, Daniel. I understand.””
Daniel stared at her.
“But you’re letting grief control you.””
Lily looked confused.
Victoria walked closer.
“She could have researched your family. She could have found that necklace somewhere.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“You think she planned this?””
“I think people do desperate things for money.””
The accusation hit Lily like a slap.
She lowered her eyes.
“I don’t want his money.””
Victoria smiled coldly.
“Everyone says that before they get it.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Victoria stared at him.
“Daniel, think about what you’re doing.””
“I am.””
“No, you’re not. You’re choosing a stranger over me.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
Then back at Victoria.
For the first time, he saw something clearly.
Victoria wasn’t afraid of losing him.
She was afraid of losing control.
“Security,” Daniel said.
Two guards immediately approached.
Victoria’s face changed.
“Are you serious?””
Daniel nodded.
“I want everyone in this room to leave.””
The guests began moving toward the exits.
But Victoria stayed.
“You’re going to regret this.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“Maybe.””
She stepped closer.
“But you’ll never know the truth if you send me away.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What truth?””
Victoria smiled faintly.
And that scared him more than anger.
“The truth about where your sister really came from.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Victoria glanced at Lily.
Then whispered:
“She isn’t the only person who knows about that night.””
Before Daniel could respond, Victoria walked away.
The guards followed.
Lily stood frozen.
“Daniel…”
He turned.
“Did she know about me?””
Lily looked frightened.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel looked toward the mansion doors where Victoria had disappeared.
For twenty years, he searched for his missing sister.
But now he wondered something terrifying.
If Victoria knew Lily existed…
Who else had been hiding the truth?
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
The number on the screen was unknown.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Daniel Sterling?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“You found Lily.””
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“Who is this?””
The stranger ignored the question.
“You need to understand something.””
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
“What?””
May you like
The voice lowered.
“Your sister’s disappearance was not an accident.””
