Chapter 7: The Love That Was Built on Lies
Daniel read the sentence three times.
Then a fourth.
His father’s handwriting stared back at him from the old paper.
Daniel, if Lily returns one day, trust no one who claims to love you.
The words should have been impossible.
But they weren’t.
Because standing in front of him was the woman who had spent the last two years telling him she loved him.
Victoria.
The woman who had cried beside him when he talked about Lily.
The woman who held his hand during sleepless nights.
The woman who promised she would stand beside him forever.
And now…
His father had warned him about someone exactly like her.
Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.
Victoria looked away.
That was all he needed to see.
“Why?””
His voice was quiet.
But everyone in the room felt the anger underneath it.
Victoria swallowed.
“Daniel…”
“Why would my father write that?””
She didn’t answer.
“Why would he warn me about people who claim to love me?””
Silence.
Michael looked at Victoria.
“You know why.””
Victoria’s face tightened.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””
Daniel turned toward Michael.
“What does that mean?””
Michael sighed.
“Your family has spent twenty years hiding the same truth.””
“What truth?””
Michael looked at the letter.
“Love and loyalty are not always the same thing.””
Daniel stared at him.
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Michael stepped closer.
“But it’s the reason your parents died.””
Lily stood near the staircase, holding herself tightly.
She looked overwhelmed.
Daniel noticed.
“Lily.””
She looked at him.
“I’m okay.””
“You don’t have to be.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I spent my whole life not knowing where I came from.””
She touched the locket.
“Now I know I have a brother, parents, a family…”
She looked around the room.
“And somehow there are still more secrets.””
Daniel walked toward her.
“You’re not facing this alone.””
For the first time that night, Lily smiled.
A small one.
But real.
Then Victoria spoke.
“You really believe you can trust her?””
Everyone turned.
Victoria pointed at Lily.
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“What?””
“You found her wearing a necklace connected to your family. She knows details about your childhood. She appears at your engagement party at the exact moment your ring disappears.””
Lily looked hurt.
“Why are you still doing this?””
Victoria ignored her.
“Daniel, you’re emotional.””
“No.””
His voice sharpened.
“I’m finally thinking clearly.””
Victoria looked wounded.
“You think I’m the enemy?””
Daniel stared at her.
“I don’t know anymore.””
That answer broke something in her expression.
Because Victoria had always been certain of one thing.
Daniel loved her.
She had built her entire plan around that.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
The mansion became painfully quiet.
Victoria laughed softly.
“You really are just like your father.””
Daniel froze.
“What did you say?””
“You hear one piece of information and suddenly everyone becomes a suspect.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Careful.””
Victoria looked at him.
“You don’t get to threaten me.””
“Why?””
Michael’s voice lowered.
“Because I know what your father did.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Stop.””
Everyone went silent.
He was tired.
Tired of half-truths.
Tired of people protecting him by lying to him.
“Everyone leaves something out.””
He looked at Michael.
“You took my sister.””
Michael lowered his head.
“Yes.””
He looked at Robert.
“You hid information.””
The lawyer nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel turned to Victoria.
“You framed Lily.””
Victoria didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
Daniel felt something inside him break.
“I spent twenty years searching for answers.””
He looked around the room.
“And every person who claimed to care about me knew more than I did.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily walked toward Victoria.
Everyone watched.
“You hate me.””
Victoria looked surprised.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Lily’s voice was calm.
“You don’t hate me because you think I’m fake.””
Victoria’s expression changed.
“You hate me because I’m proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Daniel loved someone before you.””
Victoria went still.
Lily continued.
“He loved his family.””
The words struck deeper than any insult.
“And you couldn’t control that.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
She wasn’t the frightened maid anymore.
She was someone who had survived being abandoned.
Victoria stared at her.
“You think you understand everything.””
“No.””
Lily shook her head.
“I just understand what it feels like when someone takes your life away from you.””
A long silence followed.
Then Victoria’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at her.
She hesitated.
Daniel noticed.
“Answer it.””
She stared at him.
“Daniel…”
“Answer it.””
Slowly, she picked up.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
Daniel couldn’t hear the words.
But Victoria’s face changed.
The confidence disappeared.
Her hand trembled.
“What do you mean he’s awake?””
Everyone froze.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is that?””
Victoria ended the call.
Nobody moved.
“Victoria.””
She looked at him.
“It’s not what you think.””
“Who is awake?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
Because whoever was on that phone had power over her.
And Daniel saw it.
For the first time.
Victoria Harrington was afraid.
Michael’s expression changed.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Michael whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Who?””
Michael stared at Victoria.
“Thomas Harrington.””
May you like
Victoria’s father.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
