Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth No One Was Ready For

Daniel had imagined meeting Marcus Hale a thousand different ways.

He imagined anger.

He imagined confrontation.

He imagined demanding answers from the man who had haunted Vanessa’s past and invaded his family’s present.

But he never imagined this.

Marcus standing in his hallway.

Looking at Sophie.

Calling her Lily.

The little girl who had spent her entire life calling him Daddy.

The little girl who reached for him when she was scared.

The little girl who had no idea that everyone around her was fighting over who she was.

Daniel moved instantly.

He stepped between Marcus and the stairs.

“You don’t come any closer.””

Marcus stopped.

For a moment, he simply looked at Daniel.

Then he smiled.

“You really don’t know.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Know what?””

Marcus looked around the house.

“You built a life on someone else’s stolen happiness.””

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Don’t.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Still protecting him?””

“You’re lying.””

A small laugh escaped Marcus.

“After all these years, that’s what you tell yourself?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then Marcus.

“Everyone is going to start talking.””

His voice was controlled.

“But I want the truth.””

Marcus smiled.

“Good.””

He slowly raised his hands.

“I came here for the same reason.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“Why?””

Marcus looked upstairs.

“For my daughter.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She is not yours.””

The smile disappeared.

“She is.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“She’s my daughter.””

Marcus studied him.

And strangely, he didn’t look angry.

He looked sad.

“I know.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Marcus looked at Sophie’s room.

“I know she loves you.””

The hallway became silent.

“She knows you as her father.””

Daniel didn’t expect that.

Not from him.

Marcus continued:

“And that was never supposed to happen.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Then why did you come?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because I waited.””

“For what?””

“For the truth to come out.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You don’t care about truth.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“You still believe that?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

“You destroyed my family.””

Marcus stared at her.

Then he said quietly:

“You destroyed ours.””

The words hit her.

Daniel noticed.

There was a history between them that went beyond anger.

Beyond blame.

“You’re both going to explain.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I will.””

Daniel pointed toward the living room.

“Sit.””

For once, Marcus obeyed.

Everyone gathered.

Daniel kept Ethan beside him.

Vanessa sat across from Marcus.

Clara remained standing near the wall.

The room looked like a courtroom.

Only the judge was missing.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Start.””

Marcus took a breath.

“Twelve years ago, I lost my children.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“No.””

Marcus ignored her.

“Everyone believed there was an accident.””

Daniel watched carefully.

“But there wasn’t.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“There was a plan.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“The night Lily disappeared, someone took her.””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward Clara.

Clara looked away.

“You know who.””

Everyone noticed.

Marcus smiled sadly.

“She always was good at pretending.””

Clara’s voice was cold.

“Don’t.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Clara.””

She didn’t answer.

“Who took Lily?””

Silence.

Then Marcus said:

“Clara.””

The room froze.

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

Clara’s expression didn’t change.

“She didn’t steal her.””

Marcus laughed.

“Of course you would say that.””

Clara looked at him.

“Because I know the truth.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“You know your version.””

Daniel stood.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

“I don’t care about your arguments.””

He looked at Clara.

“I don’t care about your history.””

Then Marcus.

“I care about my daughter.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“So tell me what happened.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Clara sighed.

“I found Lily after the accident.””

Daniel turned.

“You said you didn’t take her.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then where did you find her?””

Clara looked down.

“At the bridge.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“Marcus left her there.””

Marcus stood.

“That’s a lie.””

Clara looked at him.

“Is it?””

“You know what happened.””

“I know you ran.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Daniel noticed.

The confidence disappeared.

“What is she talking about?””

Marcus looked away.

That was the first time Daniel saw him afraid.

“Marcus.””

The man remained silent.

Vanessa whispered:

“What did you do?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I was trying to protect them.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“I was.””

“You hurt them.””

“I made mistakes.””

The admission stunned everyone.

Daniel stared.

“What mistakes?””

Marcus’s voice became quieter.

“I thought I could fix everything.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“You thought you owned everything.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because maybe he knew she was right.

Clara stepped forward.

“Marcus was obsessed with control.””

Daniel looked at her.

“And you?””

She looked at Sophie’s room.

“I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

“To save one child.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You separated a mother from her daughter.””

“I saved her life.””

“You don’t know that.””

“Yes.””

Clara’s voice broke.

“I do.””

Everyone looked at her.

Because for the first time, she sounded like someone carrying guilt.

Not pride.

Not confidence.

Guilt.

“What aren’t you telling us?”” Daniel asked.

Clara looked at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

Finally, she said:

“The night Lily disappeared, Marcus wasn’t the only person chasing her.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who else?””

Clara hesitated.

Then:

“Someone wanted Lily gone.””

“Who?””

Clara’s eyes moved toward the photograph on the table.

The one showing the children.

“The person who changed the hospital records.””

Daniel felt cold.

“The baby records?””

Clara nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa whispered:

“So someone switched the babies.””

“No.””

Clara looked at her.

“Someone tried to.””

Daniel froze.

“What does that mean?””

Clara reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

“I kept this for twelve years.””

She placed it on the table.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

DNA reports.

Daniel looked at the first page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Clara’s voice was quiet.

“The reason I came here tonight.””

Daniel looked down.

The report was recent.

Very recent.

His hands shook as he read.

*DNA TEST RESULTS.*

He looked at the names.

Then the conclusion.

His heart pounded.

“No.””

Vanessa stood.

“What?””

Daniel couldn’t speak.

Marcus stepped forward.

“What does it say?””

Daniel looked up.

His face had changed.

Because the answer was not what anyone expected.

Not even Marcus.

“The DNA test confirms…”

His voice broke.

“That Sophie is Lily.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus closed his eyes.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus whispered:

“My daughter.””

But Daniel wasn’t finished.

Because below the first result was another section.

Another comparison.

Another name.

And that was the part that made his blood run cold.

Because the report didn’t just prove who Sophie was.

It revealed who had been lying.

Daniel looked at Clara.

Then at Vanessa.

Then Marcus.

“The test also says…”

Everyone waited.

Daniel swallowed.

“That Lily’s biological mother is not Vanessa.””

The room went completely silent.

Vanessa’s face went blank.

“No.””

Daniel looked at the report again.

“It says Emily Carter was not Lily’s birth mother.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Clara stepped back.

Impossible.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Then who gave birth to her?””

Nobody answered.

Until Marcus slowly turned toward Clara.

His expression changed.

“Wait.””

Clara’s face lost color.

Marcus whispered:

“No.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Who?””

Marcus stared at Clara.

And the answer came out like a confession.

“Clara.””

A silence followed.

“She was Lily’s mother.””

Daniel froze.

Vanessa couldn’t breathe.

Clara closed her eyes.

And for the first time…

She stopped pretending.

“I didn’t steal Lily.””

Her voice trembled.

“Because Lily was never Emily’s.””

She looked toward Sophie’s room.

“She was mine.””

Then every light in the house flickered.

And a message appeared on Daniel’s phone.

From an unknown number.

May you like

Only four words.

*You still don’t know everything.*
