Amused

Chapter 6: The Daughter Everyone Lost

Daniel didn’t sleep.

Not that night.

Not even for a minute.

He sat in the living room with the lights off, watching the street outside through the gap between the curtains.

The house that had always felt safe now felt unfamiliar.

Every sound made him look up.

Every shadow made his heart race.

Because somewhere outside was a man who was supposed to be dead.

A man who claimed his daughter was not his daughter.

A man who knew things about his family that nobody should know.

On the couch beside him, Ethan was asleep.

Or at least trying to be.

The eight-year-old boy had refused to go upstairs.

“I’m staying with you,” he had said.

Daniel had wanted to argue.

He wanted to tell him he was just a child.

That he shouldn’t have to protect anyone.

But then he remembered something.

Ethan had already been doing that.

For months.

Maybe longer.

So Daniel had simply placed a blanket over him and sat beside him.

Across the room, Sophie slept in her crib.

Peaceful.

Unaware.

Too young to understand that adults were fighting over pieces of her identity.

Daniel stared at her tiny face.

Then he looked at the birthmark on her shoulder.

The same mark Vanessa claimed belonged to Lily.

The same mark Marcus said belonged to his daughter.

His mind was trapped between two impossible truths.

Either Marcus was lying.

Or Vanessa had been raising someone else’s child.

A sound came from the hallway.

Daniel immediately stood.

His hand reached for the phone on the table.

Then he saw Vanessa.

She stood there quietly.

Her eyes were tired.

Her face looked older than it had the day before.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t relax.

“What are you doing?””

“I couldn’t sleep.””

“Neither could I.””

She looked at Ethan.

“He’s a good boy.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“He is.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I never wanted him to be afraid of me.””

“But he was.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The admission surprised him.

No excuses.

No arguments.

Just guilt.

Daniel studied her.

“Why did you do it?””

Her eyes dropped.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She sat down slowly.

“I think…”

She paused.

“I think every time I looked at Sophie, I saw Lily.””

Daniel remained standing.

“That doesn’t explain Ethan.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked at her hands.

“It doesn’t.””

The honesty made the silence heavier.

“I was angry,” she whispered.

“At who?””

“At everyone.””

Her voice cracked.

“At Marcus. At myself. At the world.””

She looked toward Sophie’s room.

“And then I saw this perfect little girl who had everything Lily never got.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“Lily had a mother who was broken.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

“She had a father who was dangerous.””

Her voice became quieter.

“And Sophie had you.””

The words hit him unexpectedly.

Vanessa looked up.

“I hated that.””

Daniel stared.

“You hated my daughter because she was loved?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I hated that she reminded me of what I lost.””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel said:

“You should have gotten help.””

“I know.””

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

“You should never have touched Ethan.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know.””

The repetition made something clear.

She wasn’t fighting anymore.

Not tonight.

But Daniel still needed answers.

“Tell me about the night Lily disappeared.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus knows something.””

“He always knows something.””

“And now he’s here.””

Her face tightened.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said:

“Because he wants Sophie.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“He thinks she’s Lily.””

“She isn’t.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t know that.””

The words cut through him.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What did you say?””

She looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“Say it again.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“I don’t know if Sophie is Lily.””

The room felt colder.

Daniel stared.

“She’s my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“She was born in this house.””

“Yes.””

“I was there.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

“Then what are you saying?””

She looked at him.

“I’m saying Marcus might not be wrong.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I saw her birth certificate.””

Vanessa’s eyes changed.

“Did you?””

The question stopped him.

“Yes.””

“Did you see it yourself?””

Daniel went quiet.

Because suddenly he remembered.

The paperwork.

The hospital records.

The documents Vanessa had helped organize.

He had trusted her.

“You’re saying…”

“I’m saying you need to check.””

Daniel stepped back.

The idea was unbearable.

But the truth was worse.

Before he could answer, his phone buzzed.

A message.

From Detective Lauren Pierce.

*I found something about Marcus Hale. You need to come alone.*

Daniel looked at the screen.

Vanessa noticed.

“Who is it?””

“Detective Pierce.””

Her face changed.

“What did she find?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Whatever was waiting at the station would change everything.

One hour later, Daniel sat across from Detective Lauren Pierce in a quiet interview room.

A folder sat between them.

She looked serious.

More serious than before.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“You need to prepare yourself.””

“For what?””

She opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Medical records.

Daniel looked at the first page.

Then froze.

“What is this?””

Lauren folded her hands.

“This is the original report from the night Marcus Hale disappeared.””

Daniel scanned the page.

“There was no accident.””

“No.””

His eyes lifted.

“Then what happened?””

Lauren hesitated.

“Someone staged one.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

She pushed another document forward.

“This was found hidden in an old storage unit registered under Emily Carter.””

Daniel looked down.

The name.

Emily.

Again.

Inside the envelope was a hospital record.

His stomach tightened.

“Why is this here?””

Lauren looked at him.

“Because the record mentions a baby girl.””

Daniel’s fingers trembled.

“What baby?””

Lauren didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“A child admitted to the hospital twelve years ago.””

Daniel looked at the paper.

The date.

The location.

Everything matched.

“Who was the baby?””

Lauren pushed the final document toward him.

Daniel read the name.

And his entire body went cold.

Because the record said:

*Female infant. Name: Lily Hale.*

He looked up.

“That’s impossible.””

Lauren’s expression was careful.

“Why?””

“Because Lily disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“And Sophie was born later.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked back at the paper.

Then Lauren said the sentence he feared most.

“The hospital records show that Emily Carter gave birth to a daughter on the same day your wife gave birth to Sophie.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“No.””

“It’s in the records.””

“No.””

“Daniel…”

He stood suddenly.

“No.””

Lauren didn’t move.

“Two baby girls.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Same hospital.””

Silence.

“Same day.””

His hands shook.

“And one of them was registered as Sophie.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

His mind raced.

A terrible possibility forming.

“Are you saying…”

Lauren lowered her voice.

“We don’t know yet.””

But Daniel already knew.

Someone had switched two babies.

The question was not whether it happened.

The question was why.

And who did it.

Daniel grabbed the folder.

“I need to go home.””

Lauren stood.

“Daniel.””

He stopped.

“There’s one more thing.””

He turned.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“Marcus didn’t come back because of revenge.””

Daniel waited.

“He came back because someone contacted him.””

“Who?””

Lauren slowly handed him another piece of paper.

A phone record.

A number.

A name.

Daniel read it.

And his blood ran cold.

Because the person who called Marcus Hale two days ago…

Was someone inside his own house.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who had been beside Sophie the entire time.

May you like

The name at the top of the record was:

*Vanessa Carter.*
