Chapter 5: The Birthmark That Changed Everything

Daniel read the message again.

Then again.

The words didn’t change.

*Ask Vanessa why your daughter has the same birthmark as mine.*

His fingers went numb around the phone.

For a moment, his mind refused to accept what he was seeing.

Because there were only two possibilities.

Either someone was trying to destroy his family with a cruel lie.

Or the truth was something much worse.

Daniel slowly looked toward Vanessa.

She was staring at him.

Not confused.

Not angry.

Terrified.

“Who sent that?”” she whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He held up the phone.

Her eyes moved across the screen.

And the second she saw the message, she sat down.

Like her legs could no longer support her.

“Vanessa.””

She covered her mouth.

“No…”

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me why someone thinks Sophie has the same birthmark as their daughter.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stood near the doorway, watching.

He didn’t understand everything.

But he understood fear.

And Vanessa was afraid.

Very afraid.

“I need to check something,” she whispered.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“No.””

She looked up.

“What?””

“No more secrets.””

Her lips parted.

“I need to see Sophie.””

Daniel immediately stepped in front of his daughter’s bedroom door.

“You’re not going near her.””

The pain on Vanessa’s face was real.

“I’m not going to hurt her.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“I wish I could believe that.””

Those words broke something in her.

She looked away.

And for the first time, Daniel saw how much those words affected her.

But he couldn’t forget what he had seen.

He couldn’t forget Ethan’s fear.

He couldn’t forget Sophie hiding under a table.

“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered, “please.””

He studied her.

“Why?””

Her voice shook.

“Because if what Marcus said is true…”

She stopped.

Daniel waited.

“If what Marcus said is true, then Sophie may be the reason he came back.””

The words sent a cold feeling through him.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“I need to tell you everything.””

“Finally.””

She flinched.

“I know.””

She took a deep breath.

“Before I became Vanessa, before I met you, before this family…”

She paused.

“I had a daughter.””

Daniel said nothing.

Her eyes filled.

“Her name was Lily.””

The name hung in the air.

“Marcus and I had two children.””

Daniel remembered the photograph.

The two kids.

The man beside them.

“The boy was Noah.””

Vanessa looked down.

“And Lily was only six months old.””

Daniel felt his anger soften slightly.

Only slightly.

“What happened?””

Vanessa’s hands trembled.

“Marcus told everyone there was an accident.””

“But?””

“But I never believed the story.””

“Why?””

“Because I was there.””

The room became still.

Vanessa continued.

“That night, Marcus and I fought.””

Daniel listened carefully.

“He had found out I wanted to leave him.””

Her voice dropped.

“He told me if I left, he would make sure nobody believed me.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“What happened after that?””

“He took the children.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew they were the only thing I cared about.””

A tear fell down her cheek.

“I followed him.””

She closed her eyes.

“I found his car near the old bridge.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“The police report said there was an accident.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you say you never believed it?””

“Because the car was empty.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“There were no children.””

A heavy silence followed.

“Noah and Lily were gone.””

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked at her carefully.

“You’re saying your children disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“And Marcus disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“And you changed your name.””

She nodded.

“Because everyone blamed me.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus made sure they did.””

Her voice became bitter.

“He told everyone I was unstable. That I was dangerous. That I couldn’t accept losing my children.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Were you?””

The question hurt.

Vanessa looked up.

“I was a mother who lost two children.””

She swallowed.

“But nobody wanted to hear that.””

Daniel looked away.

He didn’t know what to believe.

Too many secrets.

Too many lies.

But one thing was clear.

Something had happened.

Something Vanessa had been running from.

“What does Sophie’s birthmark have to do with Lily?””

Vanessa went quiet.

Too quiet.

Daniel noticed immediately.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“She has it.””

“What?””

“The birthmark.””

Her voice barely existed.

“She has the same one Lily had.””

Daniel felt his heart stop.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying…”

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“I noticed it the first week after I met you.””

Daniel stared.

“The first week?””

She nodded.

“When I saw Sophie during dinner, I saw the mark on her shoulder.””

“And?””

“And I almost dropped the plate in my hands.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You knew?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“I didn’t know.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because it was impossible.””

“Impossible?””

“Yes.””

Her tears finally fell.

“Lily died twelve years ago.””

Daniel froze.

Twelve years.

The math hit him.

Lily would have been around Sophie’s age.

No.

Younger.

But the thought still terrified him.

“How old was Lily when she disappeared?””

“Fifteen months.””

Daniel looked toward Sophie’s room.

His daughter.

Fifteen months old.

The same age.

His breathing became heavier.

“That’s why you were scared of her.””

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?””

“You weren’t angry at Sophie.””

A pause.

“You were afraid of her.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“You looked at my daughter and saw your missing child.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I didn’t know how to handle it.””

Daniel stared.

“So you scared her?””

“No.””

“You hit Ethan.””

Her face crumbled.

“I never meant…”

“But you did.””

She closed her eyes.

The truth hurt.

And Daniel saw it.

Not enough to forgive.

But enough to understand there was more beneath the surface.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Dad?””

Daniel turned.

The boy was holding something.

A small notebook.

“I found this too.””

Vanessa immediately stood.

“Ethan, no.””

The boy froze.

Daniel noticed.

“Give it to me.””

Slowly, Ethan walked forward.

He handed Daniel the notebook.

The cover was old.

The pages were yellow.

Daniel opened it.

The first page contained a name.

*Emily Carter.*

Below it:

*Things I need to remember if Marcus finds us.*

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

She went pale.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

Daniel turned the page.

The handwriting continued.

*Noah and Lily are alive.*

Daniel froze.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

The next sentence was written underneath.

*But they are not with me anymore.*

Daniel turned another page.

There was a photograph taped inside.

A photograph of two children.

Older than the ones in the original picture.

And behind them stood a woman.

A woman Daniel recognized.

A woman who had visited their house many times.

His blood ran cold.

Because he knew her.

And so did Vanessa.

“No…”

Vanessa whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“Who is she?””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“She was supposed to help me.””

“Who?””

Her voice broke.

“The person who promised to find my children.””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“Then why is she standing with them?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

The same person who claimed to help her search…

Had been hiding the children all along.

Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke at first.

Only breathing.

Then a man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Daniel.””

Daniel froze.

He knew that voice.

Even though he had only heard it once.

In the stories.

In the past.

“Marcus?””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“Good.””

The man sounded satisfied.

“You finally know my name.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

“I’m closer than you think.””

Daniel’s eyes moved to the window.

“Why are you contacting me?””

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

“Because Vanessa has been lying to you.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“And you haven’t?””

Another pause.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Ask her who your daughter really is.””

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the screen.

And then he noticed something.

A car parked across the street.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching the house.

Daniel stepped closer to the window.

The car’s headlights turned on.

And before it drove away, Daniel saw the person behind the wheel.

A man.

Smiling.

Marcus Hale.

But the terrifying part wasn’t that Marcus was alive.

It was what he left behind.

A message written on the fogged-up window of Daniel’s car.

May you like

Three words.

*Sophie is Lily.*
