Chapter 3: The Photograph That Should Not Exist

Daniel stared at the photograph until the words on the back stopped looking like words.

*She knows the truth about what happened that night.*

His fingers tightened around the paper.

For a moment, the kitchen disappeared.

The clock stopped ticking.

The refrigerator stopped humming.

All he could hear was his own heartbeat.

Because the man in the photograph was not a stranger.

Daniel knew him.

Everyone in the family had known him.

His name was Marcus Hale.

And three years ago, the entire town believed Marcus had died.

Including Daniel.

“Dad?””

Ethan’s voice pulled him back.

Daniel looked down.

His son was watching him carefully.

“What is it?”” Ethan asked.

Daniel quickly turned the photograph over.

“Where did you get this?””

Ethan shifted in his chair.

“From the same box.””

“The box under Vanessa’s bed?””

He nodded.

“Why didn’t you show me before?””

“I was scared.””

Daniel softened his voice.

“Scared of me?””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

He looked toward the hallway.

“Scared of her.””

The honesty in those words hurt more than any accusation.

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

The boy looked up.

“From now on, if something scares you, you tell me.””

“But what if she gets angry?””

Daniel reached across the table.

“She won’t get the chance.””

Ethan didn’t look completely convinced.

Daniel understood why.

Trust wasn’t rebuilt in one conversation.

Especially not after a child had spent months learning that adults might not protect him.

A sound came from upstairs.

A small cry.

“Sophie.””

Daniel immediately stood.

He rushed up the stairs.

Ethan followed.

When Daniel opened Sophie’s bedroom door, he found his daughter sitting in the middle of her crib, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

Her eyes were wide.

She wasn’t crying.

She was staring at the corner of the room.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Sweetheart?””

Sophie pointed.

Daniel looked.

Nothing.

Just a shadow from the curtains.

He picked her up.

“It’s okay.””

But Sophie buried her face against his chest.

She was shaking.

Daniel carried her back into the hallway.

And that was when he noticed something.

The guest room door.

Vanessa’s door.

It was slightly open.

A thin line of light stretched across the floor.

Daniel had closed it earlier.

He was certain.

He slowly walked closer.

“Dad?””

Ethan whispered.

Daniel raised a hand.

“Stay behind me.””

He pushed the door open.

Vanessa was standing near the window.

She wasn’t surprised to see him.

Almost like she had been waiting.

“What are you doing in here?”” she asked.

Daniel looked around.

The room was different.

Earlier, he had been too focused on the children to notice.

Now he saw it.

A suitcase.

Half-packed.

A closet door open.

Documents scattered across the bed.

“You’re leaving.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped inside.

“You were going to leave?””

“I was thinking.””

“About running?””

Her eyes flashed.

“Careful.””

Daniel looked at the papers on the bed.

One of them had a name written across the top.

Marcus Hale.

Vanessa noticed where he was looking.

She moved quickly.

Too quickly.

She grabbed the document.

Daniel saw it.

And that was enough.

“Why do you have his name?””

Vanessa froze.

“You need to stop digging into things you don’t understand.””

Daniel stared.

“I understand that you lied to me.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“I protected myself.””

“From what?””

She looked away.

“From people who only see the worst in me.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“The worst in you?””

His voice dropped.

“My son has been afraid of you.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

A flicker of guilt.

Then it was gone.

“Children exaggerate.””

“Not like this.””

“They wanted attention.””

Daniel took a step forward.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t blame them for what you did.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You think you know everything now because Ethan gave you a picture?””

“No.””

Daniel held up the photograph.

“I know you lied about Marcus.””

Silence.

Vanessa stared at the picture.

And for the first time, Daniel saw real fear.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

“Where did you get that?””

The question came out too fast.

Daniel noticed.

“You’re not denying it.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I told you.””

“Told me what?””

“That I lost everything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. You told me a story.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Be careful.””

“I want the truth.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“The truth?””

She walked toward him.

“You couldn’t handle the truth.””

“Try me.””

For several seconds, they stared at each other.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus wasn’t supposed to die.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

“It means life doesn’t always happen the way people think.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“It’s a warning.””

Before Daniel could respond, his phone rang.

The name on the screen made him pause.

Detective Lauren Pierce.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Daniel, I received your message.””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“I didn’t leave one.””

A pause.

Then Lauren said:

“Someone called the station using your name.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“They reported concerns about your children.””

His eyes moved to Vanessa.

“Who called?””

Another pause.

Then the detective answered.

“Your wife.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Daniel stared at her.

“What did she say?””

“She claimed you were becoming unstable.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“She said you were accusing her of things that weren’t true.””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.

“What else?””

“She asked us to check on the children.””

The words landed heavily.

Daniel looked at Ethan standing in the hallway.

Then at Sophie in his arms.

Vanessa had called the police.

Against him.

After everything.

“Detective,” Daniel said quietly, “I need you to listen carefully.””

“I’m listening.””

“My children are not in danger from me.””

“I understand.””

“And I need to tell you something about Vanessa.””

The room became completely silent.

Vanessa watched him.

Her face had lost all color.

“Daniel.””

He ignored her.

“There are things about her past that I think you need to investigate.””

Detective Pierce lowered her voice.

“What kind of things?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Things involving Marcus Hale.””

There was silence on the other end.

Then Lauren spoke.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“You need to come to the station.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus Hale’s death certificate was reopened yesterday.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“I was going to call you.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because someone submitted evidence that Marcus Hale may not have died three years ago.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at him.

And this time, she wasn’t pretending.

She was terrified.

The phone slipped slightly in his hand.

Because one impossible thought entered his mind.

The man in the photograph wasn’t supposed to exist.

But he did.

And if Marcus Hale was alive…

Then Vanessa’s entire story had been a lie.

Daniel ended the call.

Nobody moved.

Then, from the hallway, Ethan whispered:

“Dad?””

Daniel turned.

“Yes?””

Ethan looked toward Vanessa.

“There’s one more thing I never told you.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“What?””

Ethan’s face went pale.

“Marcus came to our house.””

Daniel froze.

“When?””

“Before you came home.””

“When?””

Ethan looked down.

“Yesterday.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at him.

“Ethan… what did he say?””

The boy swallowed.

“He said he needed to see Vanessa.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

But then Ethan said the one thing that made Daniel’s blood run cold.

“He called her by a different name.””

Daniel’s eyes locked onto Vanessa.

“What name?””

Ethan whispered:

May you like

“Emily.””

And Vanessa’s face completely broke.
