Amused

Chapter 7: The Call That Exposed Her

Daniel read the name one more time.

*Vanessa Carter.*

Not Emily.

Not an old identity.

Not a forgotten past.

Vanessa.

His wife.

The woman who had stood in his kitchen and claimed Marcus was the one who ruined her life.

The woman who said she was afraid of him.

The woman who had looked him in the eyes and told him she didn’t know why Marcus returned.

But she had called him.

She had brought him back.

Daniel felt something inside him collapse.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

Because he had spent the entire night searching for answers.

And now the answer was sitting inside his own home.

Waiting.

When Daniel returned, the house was quiet.

Too quiet.

He opened the front door slowly.

The lights were off.

For a second, he wondered if Vanessa had left.

Then he saw her.

She was sitting at the kitchen table.

Waiting.

She didn’t look surprised.

“You know.””

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You found out.””

His expression hardened.

“You called Marcus.””

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked him.

No denial.

No excuses.

Just one word.

“Yes.””

Daniel closed the door behind him.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I needed him to come.””

The words hit him harder than he expected.

“You needed him?””

“Yes.””

“After everything you told me?””

Her eyes filled.

“After everything I told you, I knew he would come.””

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I was tired of running.””

He stepped closer.

“You weren’t running.””

She looked up.

“I was.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You were hiding.””

Vanessa accepted the accusation.

“I was.””

“From Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“From the truth?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

The answer made his chest tighten.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Tell you what?””

“Everything.””

She closed her eyes.

“I don’t even know where to start.””

“Start with why you called the man you said destroyed your life.””

Her hands tightened around each other.

“Because he had the answer.””

“To what?””

Her voice broke.

“To where Lily went.””

Daniel froze.

The name still felt strange.

Because every time he heard it, he felt like he was standing on the edge of something impossible.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“I didn’t know if she was alive.””

“You said she died.””

“I thought she did.””

“You told me you lost your children.””

“I did.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why call Marcus?””

“Because three weeks ago, I received something.””

She stood and walked to a drawer.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Daniel watched carefully.

She placed it on the table.

“I found this at my door.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A little girl.

Around one year old.

Standing beside a woman.

Daniel stared.

The child looked familiar.

Too familiar.

“Who is this?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Lily.””

Daniel looked up.

“No.””

“She had the birthmark.””

His eyes moved to the photo again.

The mark on the child’s shoulder.

The same place Sophie had one.

Daniel felt sick.

“When did you receive this?””

“Three weeks ago.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Marcus?””

She shook her head.

“Of being wrong.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

She sat down.

“What if I found her and she wasn’t mine?””

The words were painful.

“What if I had spent twelve years believing my daughter was gone, only to discover I was chasing a stranger?””

Daniel stared.

“That’s why you contacted Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“He said he knew where Lily was.””

Daniel’s heart raced.

“Where?””

“He said she was living with a man who didn’t know the truth.””

The room became silent.

Daniel understood before she said it.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I didn’t know.””

“You thought Sophie…”

“I thought maybe.””

Daniel stepped away.

The idea was too much.

“You thought my daughter was yours?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I thought there was a chance.””

“A chance?””

Her voice shook.

“Daniel, I lost my child.””

“And I have been raising mine.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t.””

He pointed upstairs.

“You don’t know what it feels like to hold your child while wondering if someone is trying to take them away.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I never wanted to take Sophie.””

“But you hid the truth.””

“Yes.””

“You scared Ethan.””

“Yes.””

“You hurt him.””

Her face broke.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked away.

The anger was still there.

But now it was mixed with something else.

A question.

“Why did you hurt him?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because Ethan reminded me of Noah.””

Daniel frowned.

“Your son?””

She nodded.

“Noah tried to protect Lily.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“He was eight years old too.””

Daniel went still.

“What happened?””

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“That night Marcus took them, Noah stood between him and Lily.””

Her voice became quieter.

“Just like Ethan stood between me and Sophie.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Vanessa…”

“I saw Noah get hurt.””

She covered her face.

“And when Ethan stood there, I didn’t see Ethan.””

A pause.

“I saw my son.””

Daniel’s anger softened slightly.

But only slightly.

Because pain did not erase responsibility.

“You should have walked away.””

“I know.””

“You should have asked for help.””

“I know.””

“You should never have made Ethan pay for what Marcus did.””

“I know.””

The three words came out broken.

Then Vanessa reached into her pocket.

She pulled out her phone.

“There’s something else.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She opened a recording.

A man’s voice filled the kitchen.

Marcus.

“If you want your daughter back, bring Daniel’s child to the old bridge.””

Daniel’s face changed.

The recording continued.

“You owe me, Emily.””

A pause.

“You took my daughter.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

Then Marcus said:

“And now I’ll take yours.””

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at her.

“When did he send this?””

“Yesterday.””

“Yesterday?””

She nodded.

“After he saw Ethan.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought I could handle it.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You thought you could handle Marcus?””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I thought I could handle losing everything.””

The words silenced him.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Detective Pierce.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Daniel, where are you?””

“At home.””

“You need to leave.””

His expression changed.

“Why?””

“We traced Marcus’s location.””

“And?””

A pause.

Then:

“He was never watching your house.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Then where was he?””

Lauren’s voice lowered.

“He was watching Vanessa.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Marcus knew she contacted him.””

Daniel frowned.

“How?””

Another pause.

Then Lauren said:

“Because someone else told him.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“Who?””

“We don’t know.””

“Then why are you telling me?””

“Because we found the message Marcus received before he came back.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What message?””

Lauren hesitated.

Then:

“Someone sent him a picture of Sophie.””

The room went cold.

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“And?””

The detective’s voice became quiet.

“The caption said…”

Daniel waited.

“‘Your daughter is alive. But Vanessa doesn’t know where she is.’”

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Because she knew exactly what that meant.

Someone had been manipulating all of them.

Someone who knew the truth.

Someone who wanted Marcus and Vanessa to destroy each other.

Then the lights in the house suddenly went out.

The room fell into darkness.

Sophie started crying upstairs.

Ethan shouted:

“Dad!””

Daniel moved immediately.

But before he reached the stairs, a sound came from the front door.

A key turning.

Slowly.

Someone was unlocking the door.

Daniel froze.

Because he knew everyone who had a key.

Him.

Vanessa.

And one other person.

The door opened.

A figure stepped inside.

And a familiar voice whispered:

“Emily.””

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Because the person standing in the doorway was not Marcus.

It was the woman from the photograph.

The woman who had helped her search for Lily.

The woman who had been inside Daniel’s home.

The woman who had held Sophie before.

She smiled softly.

“Did you really think I would let you find her?””

Vanessa’s face went white.

“Clara…”

Daniel looked at the woman.

“Who is Clara?””

Vanessa whispered:

“The person who stole my children.””

And Clara smiled.

“Correction.””

May you like

She looked upstairs.

“I saved them.””
