Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind Vanessa’s Smile

Daniel stared at the piece of paper in his hand.

The handwriting was uneven.

The letters were large and messy, like they had been written by a child whose fingers were still learning how to control a pencil.

But the message was clear.

*Ask her about the first family.*

For a few seconds, Daniel forgot how to breathe.

“Ethan,” he said quietly, “where did you get this?””

His son looked at the floor.

“I found it.””

“Where?””

“In Vanessa’s room.””

The silence that followed was heavy.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

Daniel didn’t even look at her.

“Ethan.””

The boy hesitated.

“I wasn’t trying to look through her things.””

His voice became smaller.

“She told me not to go near her room. But last week Sophie was crying because she couldn’t find her blanket, and I thought maybe Vanessa put it there.””

Daniel looked at his son.

“You went inside?””

Ethan nodded.

“I saw a box under her bed.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But Daniel noticed.

“What box?”” he asked.

Ethan looked toward Vanessa.

“The one with the pictures.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Ethan.””

The warning in her voice made the little boy freeze.

Daniel immediately stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

One word.

But it carried a different weight now.

Vanessa stopped.

Daniel turned back to his son.

“What pictures?””

Ethan swallowed.

“There were pictures of a man and two kids.””

Daniel frowned.

“A man?””

“Yes.””

“Who was he?””

“I don’t know.””

Ethan looked at the paper.

“But Vanessa was crying when she looked at them.””

Daniel felt something twist in his chest.

Vanessa crying?

The woman who always appeared so controlled?

The woman who never admitted fault?

The woman who smiled at neighbors and acted like the perfect wife?

Something didn’t add up.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“This is insane.””

Daniel finally looked at her.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

She laughed nervously.

“You’re seriously questioning me because an eight-year-old found an old picture?””

“An old picture you hid.””

“I didn’t hide anything.””

“Then why did he find it under your bed?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

A small crack appeared in the perfect image she had built.

Daniel saw it.

And once he saw it, he couldn’t ignore it.

“Where are the pictures now?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I threw them away.””

“Why?””

“Because they were meaningless.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then why were you crying?””

Her face hardened.

“You weren’t there.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“But I’m here now.””

Vanessa looked at him with anger.

“You think you know everything because you walked in at the worst possible moment.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“The worst possible moment for who?””

Vanessa said nothing.

The question hung in the room.

For the first time since Daniel had arrived, she looked less like someone defending herself.

She looked like someone afraid.

Daniel noticed his phone still in his hand.

He had almost called someone.

Almost.

But before he could, Vanessa spoke.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

He waited.

“I have been trying to keep this family together.””

Daniel looked at Ethan and Sophie.

His daughter was still clinging to him.

His son was still standing behind him.

“By hurting them?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand what children are like.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“Don’t.””

“What?””

“Don’t make this about them.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You always do this.””

“Do what?””

“Protect them.””

Daniel stared.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

“Because they need protection.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked almost offended.

Then she whispered:

“I guess I was right.””

Daniel frowned.

“About what?””

“That you would choose them.””

The words sounded strange.

Not like a mother upset with her husband.

Like someone who believed she was competing for his attention.

Daniel felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Nothing.””

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“You don’t get to say something like that and walk away.””

She remained silent.

Daniel waited.

Finally, she said:

“Before me, there was someone else.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“Before this family.””

The room seemed to grow colder.

“Vanessa…”

She laughed softly.

A bitter laugh.

“You never asked enough questions about me.””

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

She looked at him.

“When we met, you knew I had been married before.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I had children before.””

Daniel went still.

Children?

The word hit him harder than expected.

“Wait.””

Vanessa’s face became unreadable.

“You heard me.””

“You told me you had no children.””

“I told you I didn’t have children anymore.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that even mean?””

Vanessa walked toward the window.

The afternoon sunlight cut across her face.

“I lost them.””

Ethan looked confused.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her fingers tightened.

“They died.””

The room became silent.

Sophie made a small sound against Daniel’s shoulder.

Daniel looked at Vanessa carefully.

“I never knew.””

“Because you never asked.””

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

She turned around.

“You were so happy to find someone who would love your children. Someone who would help you. Someone who would make your life easier.””

Her words became sharper.

“You didn’t want to know my pain.””

Daniel felt anger rising.

“That does not excuse what happened today.””

“I know.””

The answer surprised him.

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

For a brief moment, Daniel saw something he hadn’t expected.

Regret.

But then it disappeared.

“I lost my children too.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

He had never heard her say that before.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“My first husband was careless.””

She paused.

“He left me alone with everything.””

Daniel listened.

“He worked all the time. He ignored me. Ignored the kids.””

Her voice became softer.

“One night, he wasn’t home.””

Daniel waited.

“And there was an accident.””

A painful silence followed.

“What kind of accident?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes flickered.

For a second, Daniel thought she would answer.

Instead, she said:

“I lost them.””

Then she walked away.

But Daniel noticed something.

She never said their names.

Not once.

Later that evening, after Vanessa locked herself in the guest room, Daniel sat at the kitchen table with Ethan.

Sophie was asleep upstairs.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Daniel looked at his son.

“You should have told me.””

Ethan stared at his hands.

“I tried.””

Daniel’s heart sank.

“When?””

“Lots of times.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

The boy shrugged.

“Because whenever I started talking about Vanessa, you said she was just stressed.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The words hurt because they were true.

“I’m sorry.””

Ethan looked surprised.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

Daniel reached across the table.

“I should have listened.””

Ethan looked down.

“I thought you would get mad at me.””

“Why would I get mad?””

“Because Vanessa said…”

He stopped.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Because Vanessa said what?””

Ethan’s fingers tightened around his sleeve.

“She said if you knew everything, you would send me away.””

Daniel felt sick.

“Send you away?””

Ethan nodded.

“She said nobody wanted a difficult kid.””

Daniel immediately pulled him into a hug.

“You are not difficult.””

Ethan didn’t move at first.

Then slowly, he hugged his father back.

“I tried to protect Sophie.””

Daniel’s eyes burned.

“I know.””

“I promised Mom.””

The room went still.

Daniel pulled back slightly.

“What did you say?””

Ethan looked confused.

“My mom.””

Daniel’s heart skipped.

“Ethan…”

“She told me before she left.””

Daniel’s face changed.

His first wife.

The mother of his children.

She had died three years earlier.

“What did she tell you?””

Ethan whispered:

“She said if anything ever happened, I had to protect Sophie.””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Toward the room where his daughter slept.

Then back at his son.

“What else did your mother say?””

Ethan hesitated.

“I don’t know if I’m supposed to tell you.””

“Why not?””

“Because Vanessa said…”

He stopped.

Daniel waited.

Finally Ethan whispered:

“She said your wife didn’t lose her children in an accident.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Ethan reached into his pocket again.

This time, he pulled out something smaller.

A photograph.

An old photograph.

Daniel took it.

And the moment he saw the picture, his blood turned cold.

Because standing beside Vanessa was a man Daniel had seen before.

A man who was supposed to be dead.

And written on the back of the photograph was a date.

A date from six months after Vanessa claimed her first family had disappeared.

Then, underneath it, one sentence:

*“She knows the truth about what happened that night.””*
